THE GOD MOMENT THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING! RCIA PRAYER FOR CATECHUMENS AND CANDIDATES O God, we come to you asking you to bless those in our community who are asking for membership in our Church. Look kindly on all catechumens and candidates as they listen for your voice. Open their hearts to your Spirit, and bring to fulfillment the good work you have begun in them. CATHOLIC WOMEN’S RETREAT March 6-8, 2015 Barbara C. Harris Center, Greenfield, NH What does EVERY woman deserve? YES! A little time alone for peace, relaxation, fellowship and opportunity to grow more in love with God. Our Women’s Retreat is the gift that ‘keeps on giving!’ Give the gift of this retreat to yourself or to the woman in your life that you love—moms, daughters, wives, girlfriends! Join us for an amazing weekend as we look at the story of the Prodigal Son. Discover the power of KNOWING a personal God who loves and cares for you. Our team will share practical information about how being honest with ourselves and with God can lead to a lifechanging transformation. We promise . . . You WILL NOT be disappointed! Join us for a weekend that will refresh your faith and lead you to becoming a more joyful Catholic. If you have never been on retreat, or if you have been on many, we promise you that all will come away with something powerful. To register go online to http://vitanova.org/womensretreat. Our Spiritual Director for the weekend will be Father Marc Montimy, pastor of St. Michael’s Church in Exeter and former pastor of Ste. Marie in Manchester. Surround them with people who care and are willing to support them in their journey of faith. We place these catechumens and candidates in the shelter of your love as they prepare to meet you in new ways, O God. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Our parish has been blessed over the past many years, including this year, to have catechumens and candidates approach our Church with the desire to learn and to be fully embraced by our Catholic faith. Please pray for them as they discern this path for their lives. And reflect on the fact that these people are being drawn to our faith traditions. What a wonderful compliment! The more I am filled with grace, the more merit my prayers, virtuous actions, and sufferings will have when I offer them to God. The more grace I am infused with, the higher the wattage on the lamp of my soul. This is because grace is what makes us more like God, more united to Him. Once again hundreds of thousands of our brothers and sisters turned out in Washington, DC on January 22 to give a grand witness to the sanctity of ALL life, from conception to natural death. Carrying the banner for this year’s national March for Life were members of the student body from Shanley High School in Fargo, North Dakota. The ENTIRE student body AND faculty of Shanley High School—400 strong—drove all day and night on buses to get to Washinton, DC. Senior Julia Johnson said, “As a school, we are humbled and honored to have been selected to hold the banner for this year’s March for Life . . . Our cause in defending life is a noble one . . . We are living in a modern day holocaust . . . that takes the lives of 3,000 babies each day, more than one million babies each year.” Johnson said, “It is our job to protect our brothers and sisters in the womb and their right to life. It is our obligation to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for value is not determined by size or age . . . We march to stop an injustice that has taken the lives of a third of our generation This pro-life movement was not born out of hatred for our neighbor, but of love.” (info from Lifesite News) Bravo for this life-conscience generation! Teens of Gate of Heaven, please consider coming to a Respect Life Committee meeting. We want to hear what you have to say! Our next meeting is at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 4, in the rectory at St. Matthew. The lighter side of ECONOMIC WEEKLY READINGS DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time Deuteronomy 18: 15-20 Psalm 95: 1-2, 6-7, 7-9 1 Corinthians 7: 32-35 Mark 1: 21-28 Each evangelist chooses a different episode to introduce Jesus’s public ministry. The calling of the two sets of fishermen brothers was a relatively private matter, so today’s Gospel reading, the cure of the man with an unclean spirit, is Mark’s first story of an action in Jesus’s public life. The focus of the account is Jesus’s exercise of power over an evil spirit; yet Mark’s interest seems to be in Jesus’s teaching authority. For the account begins with this: “The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes” (v. 22). And it ends with the people saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority” (v.27). That raises the question: How is this demonic deliverance a “teaching”? The only teaching of Jesus that Mark has given so far in his Gospel is verse 15: “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand.” That must be it. What Jesus teaches is not simply a set of ideas; it is an announcement of God’s triumph over evil—a theme Mark will develop throughout his account, culminating dramatically at the Crucifixion. Jesus’s act of demonic deliverance is an initial demonstration of that power, to which the people respond, “What is this? A new teaching with authority.” Interestingly, Matthew uses a similar sentence about Jesus’s teaching authority, but, having omitted the scene with the demon, he places it at the end of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 7: 28-29). For Mark, Jesus’s authoritative teaching is in his great acts of power through which the Kingdom is breaking in the human world. 1. How do you explain the difference between the authority the people recognize in Jesus and the authority the demons recognize? 2. How does the first reading help you understand the authority of a prophet? 3. What qualities in a person cause you to pay attention to their words? 4. If Jesus were to walk into your home or your school tomorrow, what issues do you think he would confront? 5. How do hurtful attitudes spread? THOUGHTS Fifty-five percent of economists predicted an upturn this year. Forty percent forecasted a decline. The other five percent didn’t have a coin to flip . . . The economy is so bad that they’re even putting anti-depressants in the Happy Meals at McDonalds . . .The most serious weakness in the economic system as I can see it is that I am not rich . . . When it comes to changing the lives of millions of people, nothing beats the government’s economic program. But the plague came pretty close.
