Feline Winter Woes
As the weather turns colder, we are less likely to want
to be outside for extended periods of time. The same
can be said for our pets. It seems unfair however, that
cats are often treated differently than our canine companions. Dogs are brought in the house or put in a
heated garage and provided with beds and blankets
to keep them warm. But cats are often thought to be
fine when left outside in the frigid weather. Simply put,
they aren’t.
Although some may believe that cats are meant to
wander and hunt, this is not the case. They are domesticated animals who need our care. Their built-in coats
are not enough when the temperature goes below
freezing.
Visit any animal shelter during the winter and you will
invariably see cats who are suffering from frostbite, especially in their extremities. Cats left outside often lose
the tops of their ears because they’ve been frozen so
badly. If their ears, noses and toes are being frozen, you
know they are feeling the cold everywhere else.
Responsible cat owners and guardians understand the
value of their pets to their families, their well-being and
to society and treat them accordingly.
But we all know that even when we are diligent about
protecting our pets and keeping them inside, cats escape and get out of doors or windows every day in our
city. They are curious creatures after all. Unfortunately,
they may not always find their way back home.
We can all help to protect our own feline family members by providing licenses and permanent identification. This helps to ensure that if they do get out, they
can be returned safe and sound. Identification shows
others that your cat indeed has an owner and makes it
easy to identify and contact you.
This winter, we can all help to change the plight of our
city’s cats. If you see a cat wandering in your neighbourhood, you can check to see if he has identification.
If you have the cat in your possession and he is wearing
a license, call 3-1-1 to have an officer come to pick up
the cat. In absence of a license, you can take the cat to
the Calgary Humane Society or a vet clinic. You can also
bring the cat to the Animal Services Centre if it is during regular business hours.

RRSP Strategies for
Your 20s, 30s, 40s,
50s & 60s
Financial strategies change as you advance through life.
With only a minority of Canadians in the workforce covered by an employer pension plan (about 40%, according to Statistics Canada), many of us will have to look
after ourselves in our retirement years.
The Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) and its
close cousin, the Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA), will
likely be the most important tools available to support
our financial needs in retirement. Here are some key
strategies to keep in mind at various stages in your life:
Your 20s & 30s
If you walk away with just one pearl of wisdom at this
early stage in your life and career, it is this — absolutely
do not waste your single biggest asset: time.
While spare cash at this age may seem modest and there
will be plenty of competing interests for your money,
you have time on your side to allow even the smallest
savings to become significant 30 or 40 years down the
road. As those who wait until later years to save will tell
you, delays in saving have a dramatic effect on your final
balance going into retirement.
This is where an RRSP becomes a young person’s best
friend. Unlike a traditional bank savings account, an
RRSP allows you to make tax-deductible contributions
for retirement to grow quietly at a steady pace. Since
the money is only taxed if withdrawn before retirement,
there is less temptation to spend your savings.
Consider the following:
a trusted financial advisor. Don’t worry that you don’t
have major investable assets yet. A good advisor will
appreciate your earnest desire to save for the future,
and will provide a financial strategy to help you achieve
both your short-term and long-term goals.
Your 40s
By now, there will be many different interests competing for your money.
From children to home ownership to vacations and
hobbies, money will likely appear to be going out as
soon as it is coming in. It’s also at this stage when most
people who haven’t begun saving will realize the error
of their ways. Don’t worry, it’s not too late.
To get on track and begin surging forward, this is an
even more critical time to have a relationship with a
good financial advisor to help identify your current expenses and income available for a flexible savings plan.
You should begin thinking of longer-term goals and objectives, such as envisioning your retirement objectives
and choosing a path to get there.
If you already have savings in place, this is the time
to determine whether your money is working hard
enough for you.
years. Some couples are surprised to learn of each other’s different expectations for living standards in retirement.
From a financial perspective, you need to know how
much you have to rely on savings and investments, and
whether you are on track. The reality is that your portfolio must not only provide for your current income needs,
but also must be able to sustain your needs throughout
your retired years, which can be 25 years from now.

Your 50s
For many, these are the years when income potential is
peaking and that means having a very clear picture of
what you are spending year-to-year, and whether you
are on a path to live the lifestyle you desire in retirement.
Your financial advisor can help you determine whether
you are contributing enough to your RRSP and TFSA
to meet future goals. Again, you may also want to reexamine and lower your exposure to market risk in your
investment portfolio, including your retirement savings
plans.

Whether you are ready to retire or just considering another chapter in your life, this is when you will begin
taking a hard look at your income needs year-to-year
and your outside sources of funds, such as government
retirement benefits, rental properties and savings. It is
also an important time for both you and your spouse
or partner to talk about how you want to spend future

This month’s recipe is for a vegan Buffalo Cauliflower Sandwich
– so good that you won’t be able to tell that it’s not meat. Cauliflower is such a meaty vegetable and few people really know
how much you can actually utilize it.

CULINARY FILE: new year snacks
BUFFALO CAULIFLOWER SANDWICH
10
Ingredients (two large sandwiches):
• 1 head of cauliflower
• 1/2 C non-dairy milk
• 1/2 C water
• 3/4 C all-purpose flour (can sub gluten free rice flour)
• 2 tsp garlic powder
• 2 tsp onion powder
• 1 tsp cumin
• 1 tsp paprika
• 1/4 tsp sea salt
• 1/4 tsp ground pepper
• 1 tbsp vegan butter
• 1/2 C frank’s red hot sauce
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and preheat your
oven to 450 F.
Cut your head of cauliflower in half and then cut 2 x 1/2 inch
steaks from each of the sides. Trim off an green leaves at the base,
but leave most of the stem in tact. You can use the remaining
cauliflower to make buffalo wings or just use it in another recipe
like our mushroom sage cauliflower risotto. Also roasting it in the
oven with sea salt, pepper, and olive oil is really nice too.
Tip: you could cut the cauliflower steaks in half to make four
smaller, slider style sandwiches.
Mix the flour, non-dairy milk, water, spices, and seasoning into a
bowl with a whisk until well combined. Transfer this mixture to
a wide shallow baking dish that will fit your cauliflower steaks.
Dredge the steaks through the batter and use your hands to coat
them quite well getting in all the crevices. Place the battered cauliflower steaks onto the parchment lined baking sheet and bake
for 25 mins.

As a child, what did you want
to be when you grew up?
Why: Why do X’s at the end of a letter signify
kisses?
Because: In the Middle Ages, when people were
unable to read or write, documents were often
signed using an X. Kissing the X represented
an oath to fulfill obligations specified in the
document. The X and the kiss eventually
became synonymous.

busy welcome to the New Year!
The New Year also brought “La semaine de la francophonie” to the school in an annual celebration of
French Canadian culture. From January 28 to February 1, students and staff participated in a variety
of French activities. The week began with a special
breakfast of croissants and hot chocolate. Students
learned about the Quebec Winter Carnaval and created illustrations of French phrases which are displayed
throughout the school. In addition, School Council

Sam Livingston is proud to acknowledge two students from grade 6 who have been recognized as
notable young writers. Their writing selections were
chosen to be included in the Young Writer’s Annual
Anthology of Verse which is published by the Poetry
Institute of Canada, and Fledglings an anthology of
young writers’ stories published by Dragonshoard
Fantasy Publishing.
Studies amongst the students in January and February span a range of diversity. The Kindergarten children focused on winter animals and nutrition, grades
1-2 experienced indoor tennis, studied several Canadian communities and examined magnetism in
science with the help from the Calgary Science Network. Grades 3-4 tested their engineering skills in a
science unit that required them to build bridges as
well as continued their studies of cultures from each
continent. Constable Kathy Macdonald of Calgary
Police Services visited the grade 3-6 students with a
presentation about Online Safety. A special presentation for parents on this topic was also held. The
grades 5-6 continue to work on a musical production
of “The Legend of the Great Bear” as they examine
legends and stories in language arts. We look forward to welcoming Michael Kusugak a visiting author, on March 4 and 5.

neighbours is critical to Alberta’s long-term vision. Sharing Alberta’s responsible energy development record,
increasing market access and discussing infrastructure
opportunities top the agenda as three MLAs take part in
a series of meetings in the United States starting January 13.
Cal Dallas, MLA for Red Deer-South, Alana DeLong,
MLA for Calgary-Bow and Cathy Olesen, MLA for Sherwood Park will participate in forums that bring together
American and Canadian legislators, and business and
civic leaders. Discussions will focus on advancing partnerships and increasing cooperation in areas of high
importance to Alberta’s economy.

INVESTING 404
Website: http://www.cbe.ab.ca • Email: [email protected]
Investing 101 is to buy a house, pay off your mortgage and set some money aside
for a rainy day.
Investing 202 introduces you to Canada Saving Bonds, GICs, RRSPs and TFSAs.
Investing 303 involves mutual funds, stocks and more sophisticated investments
Investing 404 looks into alternatives after the foundation of your investments
has been established. With extra money one can buy a bigger house, purchase a
vacation property, invest in works of art or look at other things to collect that should
increase in value or at least keep up with inflation.
For the past 64 years the Calgary Numismatic Society (CNS) has quietly been
providing a forum where investors in coins, paper money, tokens or other forms of
money can meet, discuss, debate and decide on the value of a great many items
relating to all forms of money. In the 1960s coin collecting became a craze with all
manner of people getting into the hobby with absurd profits being made. The silver
crash of 1970 brought this to an abrupt end and many were left with large losses.
Since then the value of coins and other quality numismatic items have kept pace
with inflation. Those who do the research, do not expect to get rich overnight and
invest in quality items have found both an enjoyable hobby and a way to build
alternative assets in their investment portfolio.

What does a Trustee do?
As a Board of Trustees, we are elected to govern the
Calgary Board of Education (CBE) in accordance with the
School Act of Alberta. Our job is to represent, lead and
serve parents, students and all Calgarians in matters of
public education.
Our focus is on students and student achievement. On
behalf of the community, Trustees provide leadership
for the CBE by defining its mission, the results we
want to achieve for students and expectations we
have for how the CBE will operate. We then monitor
actual performance against these expectations. This
monitoring takes place at public board meetings.
Trustees also engage our parents and communities.
We want to ensure we are delivering and maintaining
a school system that reflects local priorities, values and
expectations. Trustees are expected to communicate
the views and decisions of the board back to their
constituents.
Finally, Trustees are advocates for the CBE and its
students. Education is regulated and funded by the
Government of Alberta. Our advocacy work includes
talking to the Minister of Education, MLAs and other
government officials about the needs of our students
and our school system.
Mapleridge Cooperative
Preschool
We at Mapleridge Cooperative Preschool invite you to
attend our 2015/2016 Preschool Open House at the
school on Thursday, February 5, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm,
and Saturday, February 7, from 10:00 am to noon. You
will be able to meet our fabulous, highly experienced
teacher, Mrs. Killam, and see many of the activities
the children engage in while attending the school.
Preschool classes for three-year-olds run Tuesday and
Thursday mornings. There are two class times available for four-year-olds, either mornings or afternoons
on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays.
At the end of January, all classes took a fun filled field
trip to Tommy K Play. What a great morning filled with
climbing, sliding and exercise!
With Valentine’s Day and Family Day approaching,
Mapleridge Cooperative Preschool children will be
learning about and celebrating friendship, love and
family. Students will celebrate Valentine’s Day with
in-class parties filled with cupids, crafts and crunchy
heart cookies! We will also be learning exciting facts
about bears.
Overall, the job of the Board of Trustees is to listen to our
communities; guide the work of the school district; and
approve plans, policies and the annual budget. Trustees
are expected to make decisions that consider the needs
of the entire school system, rather the only representing
the interests of our ward constituents.
We want to hear from you on matters concerning
student learning and public education in Calgary. Your
input on topics and issues related to kindergarten to
Grade 12 education is important to us.
We welcome your comments, feedback and
questions. You can contact the Board of Trustees at
[email protected].

What did your dog’s ancestors do?
As a veterinarian, I was always fascinated by the ancestral
roots of many of our purebred dogs. In medieval England, every cottage had a turnspit and usually at least two
short-legged long-bodied dogs trained to turn a wheel
they walked in to keep the meat cooking evenly. These
dogs were known as vernepators or turnspit dogs. Queen
Victoria kept retired turnspit dogs as pets. The breed became extinct after the invention of the spinning jenny.
The Canadian Kennel Club divides dogs into seven groups
often based on the history of what these dogs once did.
Group One contains the sporting breeds. This includes
the pointers, retrievers, spaniels and setters. Those breeds
of dogs meant to find, flush out and retrieve birds. Because hunting means a partnership between dog and
man, these breeds tend to form very strong human-animal bonds. The golden retriever and labrador retriever
have been among the top pet breeds in the world.
Group Two are the hounds. The sight hounds or gazehounds, include greyhounds and afghan hounds. They
are tall and lean and hunt by seeing their prey. The other
type of hounds are the scent hounds and include the
bloodhounds, norwegian elkhounds and coonhounds.
They lead with their noses, of course.
Group Three compromises the working breeds. These are
dogs that pull our sleds and carts. Dogs that guard our
homes, businesses, and were bred for military purposes
going back centuries. The rottweiler’s ancestors guarded
and herded the cattle that fed the Roman legions. The
newfoundland dog was bred as a lifeguard and draught
animal from dogs that came to North America with the
Vikings.
The terriers are in Group Four. Terra is Latin for earth.
These dogs “go to earth” after vermin and other small
game. West highland white terriers or westies and airedale terriers are two popular breeds.
20
FEBRUARY
Then there is the fifth group, the Toys. A few of these
breeds are meant to catch rodents, but mostly these are
our little lapdogs. The papillon has been sitting on the
laps of European aristocracy in court paintings since the
fourteenth century, doing nothing but being beautiful.
Many of these breeds come with massive personalities
despite their diminutive sizes. My eight pound papillon
keeps my 80 pound labrador firmly in check. The cavalier
king charles spaniel, italian greyhound and yorkshire terrier all belong to this group despite their names.
Group Six, the non-sporting breeds, is a catch-all group.
It includes the bull breeds, such as the english bulldog,
and three varieties of the poodle. Some might argue the
standard poodle, or german pudelhund, should be in the
sporting group as its origin was as a hunting breed and it
is currently being admitted to some hunt tests in North
America.
The last group recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club
is Group Seven, the herding breeds, breeds once used
somewhere in the world to control livestock. These include the shetland sheepdogs, welsh corgis and german
shepherd dogs. Many who have owned some of these
breeds would equate their need to herd with their need
for oxygen it is so “bred to the bone”.
With the passage of time many of the groups are no longer true to their intention and some groups designations
vary between countries and continents. Even if you have
a mixed breed, it is fun to try to figure out what our pets
ancestors may have been like. Unfortunately, my experience with the DNA testing promised by some companies
to find out distant parentage of pets has not been very
positive.
