Cold Lake Wolves women’s hockey team beat Winnipeg 4 - 0 on Friday to win the Prairie Region championship. The 4 Wing players

The Cold Lake Wolves
have won the Prairie Region
women’s hockey championship.
The team won both of
its preliminary games at the
championships in Edmonton
last week, earning first place
and a bye into Friday’s final.
Round-robin scores were
2-1 over Winnipeg and 3-1 over
Edmonton. The Wolves were
augmented by goalie Amanda
Whalen from Moose Jaw and
three skaters from Wainwright.
Cold
Lake
rode
Whalen’s perfect goaltending
performance and a potent
scoring punch to defeat
Winnipeg 4-0 in the final.
The Wolves entered the
championships with modest
expectations.
Capt
Jackie
Zacher, the team’s coach, had
said before the tournament
that they were treating this year
as part of a development phase.
“Honestly, coming down here,
our goal was to stay close,” she
said. “We thought we’d be the
weakest team.”
Capt Zacher was impressed
by the players’ spirit as much as
by their skill.
“We really came together
as a team,” she said. “If we
had a bit of a rough period,
everybody stayed positive. They
came together and played well,
and we used our strengths to
win.”
“I’m so proud of them and
it feels awesome.”
Wainwright Wins Hoops Title

Wainwright won the Prairie Region
basketball championship on Friday,
downing Moose Jaw 72 - 52 in the final.
Wainwright finished behind Moose Jaw
and defending-champion Edmonton in
the round robin, then toughed out a win
over Edmonton in the semi-final.
Although Cold Lake hosted the
tournament, they were unable to field a
team. MCpl Rob West of 410 Squadron
augmented the Wainwright squad.

The Public Service
Health
Care
Plan
(PSHCP) has good news
for all of its members,
and bad news for some.
Effective January 1,
2015, members are no
longer required to pay a
deductible before benefits
kick in. The deductible
amount was $60 for single
members and $100 for
families. With the change,
members will only have
to pay their 20 per cent
cost share on covered
services and prescriptions
starting with their first
transaction of every year.
Also in the good
news column are new
benefits enhancements
that have been in place
since October. These
include up to $1,000 for
elective laser eye surgery;
repairs,
replacement
and servicing of sleep
apnea devices up to $300
annually; and a doubling
of the maximum annual
benefit for psychological
services to $2,000.
The bad news is
that premiums will be
increasing for retired
members. Under the
present
program,
retirees pay 25 per cent
of their premium while
the federal government
provides the other 75 per
cent. Member premiums
will go up on April 1,
2015 and every April over
the next four years until a
50-50 split is reached.

I should watch more
basketball.
The big-time showbiz
of the NBA leaves me
cold, but I really enjoyed
covering
the
Prairie
Region tournament last
week. When you strip
away the glitzy trappings
of professional basketball
(or “roundball” as the
hip sports scribes call it)
you’re left with a game
that’s fast, graceful, skillintensive and surprisingly
physical.
But help me out here,
basketball players. I have
a question that’s been
bugging me for years.
What is it about free
throws? Why do even
great players miss so
many of them?
Considering
the
many difficult shots
good players make in
the course of a game,
from variable distances
and with defenders in
their faces, why do even
the best players miss
an unhurried shot that
Tuesday, January 27, 2015
comes from the same
spot every time?
Compare a high-level
basketball player to a
high-level curler. A skip
– an amateur – who has
to slide a rock 120 feet
to within two feet of the
pin to win a game or a
championship will usually
make the shot. The rocks
are different from one
venue to another, the ice
is different and it even
changes through the
course of a game.
But a pro basketball
player – who has usually
been playing since junior
high, who has received
excellent coaching at
every level, who was
selected for a college
team and completed
a four-year university
program in throwing a
ball through a hoop (yes
I know, but I mean really),
was drafted to play pro
ball, is paid millions
and still trains hard and
practices every day – can
miss a shot that is exactly
the same as one he has
been throwing since
childhood.
I know it’s not nerves
or pressure. These guys
do amazing things under
pressure, a free throw
in the second quarter of
a regular-season game
simply doesn’t scare
them.
And I promise you I
couldn’t do any better.
But for me at least,
this remains one of the
enduring mysteries from
the wide world of sports.

Can You Form an Instant Habit?
Tammy Buchanan
Is there such a thing
as an instant habit? The
best way to develop a
habit quickly may be to
use “action triggers.”
For example, instead
of stating your habit
will be to go to the
gym regularly, you may
implement an action
trigger and ask a friend
who already goes to
pick you up on his way
there. Another example
is instead of saying your
habit will be eating
healthy to lose weight,
you might implement
an action trigger and eat
a bowl of soup before
your lunch and again
before your dinner so

Cold Lake is no

Many fear that the

we deal with the fear

Fear and anxiety go

Capricorn - December 22 - January 19
Just when you lose all hope, things take a turn for the better.
What a relief, Capricorn. Fresh faces bring new ideas to the
table, allowing for more progress than expected.
Aquarius - January 20 - February 18
Cheers, Aquarius. Cheers to you for coming to the aid of an
old friend. Cheers to you for taking the initiative on a project at
work. Cheers to you for being you.
Pisces - February 19 - March 20
Chilly days need not make for chilly attitudes, Pisces. Smile and
look on the bright side. Every cloud has a silver lining, even the
big one lurking.
Aries - March 21 - April 19
It takes two to tango, Aries. Accept responsibility for the part
you played and make amends for your actions. A new avenue is
explored at work.
Taurus - April 20 - May 20
Make no mistake, Taurus. Someone is watching and waiting to
capitalize on your errors. Proceed with caution. Long lines test
your patience.
Gemini - May 21 - June 21
Phooey, Gemini. Sincerity is always appreciated, even in
situations like this one. Be honest in your assessment and
sincere in your suggestions, and you will be heard.
Cancer - June 22 - July 22
Flattery will get you nowhere, Cancer. Stop with the praise and
focus on the job at hand. The nonchalance of a friend surprises
you. Relax. They will come to their senses.
Leo - July 23 - August 22
Moderation is key, Leo. Less can be more. A check of the
finances reveals the need for further budgeting. A minor illness
clears up with rest.
Virgo - August 23 - September 22
Easy, Virgo. Not everyone can go at your pace. Slow down and
give others time to catch up. Then attack the project together,
and you’ll finish ahead of schedule.
Libra - September 23 - October 22
Tsk-tsk, Libra. All of your pleas for help fall on deaf ears. Look
to someone outside of your inner circle to come to your rescue.
Thanks is not enough.
Scorpio - October 23 - November 21
Enough, Scorpio. Instead of trying to justify your actions, why
not just confess and make amends. You had a hand in what
went down whether you admit it or not.
Sagittarius - November 22 - December 21
Savvy Sagittarius. You really know how to stretch a dollar. Your
pal, on the other hand, could use some help. A string of tales
begins to unravel.
