St. Anthony’s School Newsletter “Lighting Pathways for life….” 29th January 2015 Principal: Paul Ryan Priest Director: Fr Hermi Rafada 9 Memory Street Toowoomba Qld 4350 Phone: 4635 6200 Fax: 4635 0950 Email: [email protected] Website: http://www.twb.catholic.edu.au/stanthonys Student Protection Contacts: Vicki Keith & Emma Gavin WHS: Korine Lewis Hello everyone, Welcome to an exciting new year at St Anthony’s. I’m delighted to say that the academic year has begun very strongly with your child/ren arriving ready to work. I commend every parent for their efforts to have ALL children in the correct uniform. Teachers have reported back that the enthusiasm shown by their class is very promising. I wish for you to know that the teaching staff have been working since the beginning of January in preparation for the year. Collaboration meetings took place many weeks ago and meetings with teachers to discuss specific students needs have already taken place. I commend the staff for their professional and genuine commitment to their role of classroom teacher. DATE CLAIMERS: 1. Fr Hal our Priest Director begins the transition into retirement. We initially thought that Easter was going to be his departure date however, plans are now firmly in place and we say goodbye to Fr Hal formally this weekend. A celebration and an opportunity to thank Fr Hal for his dedicated work and service with the school and parish will take place on Sunday 1st of February at 10.00am. This will follow Parish Mass at 8.30am. I warmly welcome everyone from the school to attend this event and send Fr Hal off with our blessings and thanks . (We also recognize the new Priest presence in our parish-Fr Hermi, we look forward to working with Fr Hermi in the future) 2. The school invites ALL parents to attend an information evening set for Wednesday the 4th of February at 5.30 pm-6.15pm. This session will begin in the Assembly Hall and will begin sharply at 5:30pm. This will be an information giving opportunity for myself and teachers. I will make an opening address to everyone and then we will invite parents to meet with their child’s teacher for about 20-30 minutes. Given the timeframes at this event, this will not be an opportunity for you to discuss specific details regarding your child’s needs. The opportunity for that will be provided by your child’s teacher at a time negotiated by you and them,at a later date. This will be a general information evening setting out routines and classroom structures unique to your child’s teacher only. For parents with more than one child at school we would simply ask you to prioritise which presentation you feel you need to attend. Remember, each teacher will provide written information for you to access at some point during the class sessions. Parents are free to move from one class to another during the 20-30 minute sessions. Please take this opportunity to fully understand the structures surrounding your child’s educational journey for 2015. P&F Meet and Greet/Disco for ALL families will occur on Friday the 13th of February. This will be a great chance to gather with other parents in your child’s class and simply get to know each other. For others it’s an opportunity to reconnect with old friends. See you then! Yr 3/4 RM- Welcome to a brand new year. This week we have been practising new routines and getting to know what is expected of us across all learning areas. In Science, we have been learning about living things and have been especially curious about our resident Venus Fly Trap that Mrs Smith brought in. In History, we revisited what Australia Day means for us. You may have heard about the Hero Headquarters. This year, we are all working toward maintaining our Super Hero behaviour by making good choices. We created our very own Super Hero and identified our strengths and weaknesses. One of the children even decided that I should be Miss Marvel! Please feel welcome to drop in to see what we have been working on. Yr 5 LL - WELCOME everyone to Year 5, 2015! The year has begun well with all students settling into life in Year 5 and becoming more and more aware each day of the expectations for them for this year. We welcome SAM BRANDWOOD to St Anthony's and hope his time here is rewarding and memorable. We also welcome his family into our school community. It is a time for all students to develop a greater responsibility towards their learning, a greater level of independence, a greater respect for themselves, the students at St Anthony's, the staff and the wider school community, and the school environment. As the second top level here now, they are considered leaders, hence role models for the younger students. They will have a number of jobs to fulfil this year, and at times will work with the Year 6's in leading the school and being of service to the school community. We are all looking forward to a great year. Of course, starting with delicious pavlovas is always a winner!!! Mm...delicious! A 'Note to Year 5 Parents' will be coming home tomorrow, so please keep an eye out for it (in school bags maybe!!!). Prep SB - Welcome to Prep! So far, it has been a fantastic week. The staggered start has allowed us to really learn the routines and what is expected in Prep. On our first full day of Prep we created a book about our class. (We will place this outside on the Prep table next week so you can see it too!). We also learnt how to do 'Read to Self'. During the middle session we had a big indoor time. During indoor time, we painted, made a handprint for mum and dad, had a turn on the playdough, and played with the blocks on the carpet. We then had a rest after lunch and went for a tour around the school. We looked inside the library, the music room and also visited Mr. Ryan, Mrs. Thornton and Mrs Hess in the office. Next Thursday we will start borrowing two books from the library. Also, next Thursday and Friday we will start music with Mrs. Spalding! Dear Parents In the lead up to this weekend’s state election, the Queensland Catholic Education Commission (QCEC) and Queensland Parent and Friends Association have received responses from the major and minor political parties to issues that were tabled in support of Catholic Education. I encourage you to read the summary of the two major parties responses , along with the responses from the minor political parties. The full responses from each party can be found on the QCEC website. Regards John Borserio Director Healthy Lunches Hello Everyone! Over the holidays, the P&F have been working hard on making changes to our school tuckshop menu. These changes are designed to offer parents with affordable tuckshop options, whilst offering our children healthy home cooked meals, snacks and drinks. Please take the time to complete our short survey so we can obtain a better understanding of what the school community wants, and how we can make the tuckshop cater for your familie’s needs. The link to the survey is available through Facebook on the St.Anthony's P&F Support Group and also in the St.Anthony's Primary School Community Noticeboard. The survey is called: St.Anthony's Tuckshop Menu Update 2015 Survey. The survey will be available until Monday February 2 2015. Please take the time and encourage your child/ren to pack and eat healthy lunches. While packet snacks are quick and easy they do not provide enough lasting energy and nutrients to help children get through the day. We strongly encourage healthy eating. If you would like to further discuss any changes to the tuckshop menu or have suggestions that aren't covered in the survey please feel free to email me at [email protected] Thanks for you input, we really do appreciate it. Children’s Choir: Special Thank you for Fr Hal THIS WEEKEND!!!! This Sunday at the 8.30am mass at St Anthony’s Parish Church we will be given the opportunity to say ‘Thank you and good-bye’ to Fr Hal, who has looked after our parish and school for the past few years. I am so pleased that the children will be leading the singing at this special mass. The Children’s Choir is open to any child in the school who would like to share their beautiful voice with the people of the St Anthony’s Parish. The choir sings at the Sunday morning mass on the 1st Sunday of each month. We practise once a week during 2nd break. This is a lovely way for the children of our school to be included in the life of our parish. Every time the children sing we are complimented for their wonderful singing and the excellent way they take part in the mass. St Anthony’s Vacation Care A big welcome back to old and new families, I hope everyone is ready for another huge year! St Anthony’s first Christmas vacation care was a great success. We did everything from yabbie catching, tie dying, getting up and close with some ocean creatures, going back in time and discovering dinosaurs at the Cobb & Co museum and our amazing slip and slide on the school oval just to name a handful of the activities we did. Before and after school care has started, if you are interested in accessing this service please contact the coordinator on 0417 399 835 or email [email protected] we have lots of available spaces, both permanent and casual.
