St. Anthony’s School Newsletter “Lighting Pathways for life….” 13th November 2014 Principal: Paul Ryan Priest Director: Fr Hal Ranger 9 Memory Street Toowoomba Qld 4350 Phone: 4635 6200 Fax: 4635 0950 Email: [email protected] Website: http://www.twb.catholic.edu.au/stanthonys Student Protection Contacts: Vicki Keith & Emma Gavin WHS: Korine Lewis We congratulate the P&F committee for providing another lovely night on Saturday. The Christmas Event was well attended and the evening began so beautifully with the community Mass. We thank Fr Hal for presiding over the Mass and we acknowledge the considerable and unmistakable skills of Anne-Maree Spalding leading the music. We thank the children who sang in the choir and for the Preppies who began the Mass with a beautiful song. Michelle Leaman our P&F President deserves special mention for her outstanding organisational skills. This was clearly evident on the night. Good leadership is often not seen, because if you believe in others and their skills and knowledge you can simply step back and if the need arises, support people in their efforts in completing a set task. This is Michelle’s gift. Michelle has now departed from the President’s chair and was hand-over to the next group of enthusiastic parents to continue the great work of the P&F. New Executive will be announced next week. The school acknowledges the work of the Executive committee and their ability to assist others as well. Thank you ALL so much for your contribution to St Anthony’s. It is a better school, because you’re in it. It’s just great to see parents supporting the school that supports your kids. We do have left-over items for sale and so information will be forthcoming when a Christmas stall will be made available to ALL students during school time. Watch this space! The school would like to acknowledge our teaching staff with this year’s Orientation Day. We welcomed our new Preps for 2015. During this day ALL students progressed to their next year level. Whilst it was challenging for us with so much going on around the school, we managed very well. The presentation provided by Miss d’Abadie and Miss Blaas to our new Prep enrolments was comprehensive in nature and was something to be very proud of. The school recognises these two teachers for their outstanding ability. Placement of teachers and students is now a priority for the school. It needs to be said that parents are not able to choose their child's teacher, this is left in the hands of professional educators, like Principal’s, with the skills and knowledge to be able to place both teachers and students and create the optimum learning environment for everyone. Please trust me to do my job well. Paul APRE Reflection LEAVING FAMILIES AND STUDENTS Dear Parents, This year we have two 6/7 classes leaving St Anthony’s. We would love to acknowledge all the students and the parents who have been a part of our school community. This will occur at 9am on the 5th December, in the assembly hall. It is a tradition here at St Anthony’s to present the students and leaving parents with a small gift as a token of our appreciation. Our Mass on the 5th December will commence at 11am. You are welcome to collect your child after the Mass if this is convenient for you. In fact, it may be the singular quality we possess that has the dents on our waiting lists and also capacity to transform the world. (Living the generous life-Wayne Muller) prevent you from being charged for 2015 Term 1 fees. Regards, Brendan OReilly Prep AD-Our Preps had a wonderful morning in Year One last Thursday. They came back to Prep full of stories and very excited about going to Year One next year. Congratulations to our preppies who sang at our Parish and School Christmas fair on Saturday. They did a beautiful job! We are going “full steam ahead” rehearsing for our Christmas musical now. If you could please help your child practise their lines with expression it would be a really big help for us. At this stage, our performance for parents looks like being Thursday morning, 27th November. We’ll let you know an exact time ASAP. Last swimming lesson is tomorrow (Friday 14th Nov). The children will have a break the following week, and then the P-3 swimming carnival (games) will happen on Friday 28th Nov. An exciting time ahead! Prep SB– Last week we had Prep Orientation day. Your child got to experience what Year 1 might be like. Thank you to all the parents who brought in food for the new Prep parents. Last Friday we had swimming again. On the 21st of November there will be no swimming. The swimming carnival for P-3 will be on the 28th of November. We will be starting Christmas activities soon! Yr 2 JK- During English lessons we studied silent letters (kn, wr & gn), identified collective nouns, revised similes and the formation of cursive letters (g, o & q). We focused on the written retell of “The Lion and the Mouse.” Year 2 presentation for the next week is to mime an action or event. In Mathematics, we continued to work with ‘chance’ concepts: certain, impossible, likely and unlikely and apply these ideas to the likelihood of various events. We used tally marks to record events and discuss outcomes. We also gathered, plotted and interpreted data on a graph. We identified relative positions of features on maps using cardinal points (north, south, east & west). Our Geographical studies continue with the class developing & mapping their own town. In Religion this week, we assisted Fr Hal with mid-week Parish Mass and we’re starting to examine the life and times of Jesus. After Swimming lessons children will have a late morning tea (pack extra food as children often feel hungry after swimming) and a short play before returning to the classroom. Yr 1 CC- Only three weeks of school Yr 3 RM -This week we have continued to work on our poetry anthologies so far we have written shape poems, acrostic poems and are now working on Yr 2/3VN-The term is flying by! Thank cinquains. In Maths, we have been you to everyone for their kind wishes while doing lots of testing. In Science we completed a heat conduction experiI was away sick. I feel 100% now and ment. It was so much fun! We took ready to power through the rest of the term. Next week, we will be making some some time to remember the people that have served our country in war on healthy salads in class. We have been Remembrance Day. Reminder: Some learning about being healthy people; children have not yet returned their including exercising, washing our bodies, portfolios. Please do so straight away so eating healthy foods, drinking water and wearing our hats. We have all designed a we can put new work samples in. HIPPOPOTOMONSTROSESQUIPEDALIAPHOBIIA * - What is it? Year 4 students have been increasing their vocabulary with unusual, large words, similes and metaphors. Our poetry unit has seen us writing descriptive sensory poems. We studied air, are, ear, eir and ere words and had assessments for spelling and maths. We have looked at place value to tenths and revised the 11 times table and rounding off to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000. In science we have studied the structure of a plant. Plants are so amazing! Our cool art experiment was to mix coloured water and paper to make walking water which you can see on display by our door. We have played touch football for P.E. The children’s participation in the mass and the Community Christmas singing was appreciated by everyone. By 4JR students. * The fear of big words. Yr 4 JR– Yr 5 LL- The excitement is starting to build as we approach Camp in Week 8, but we would encourage the students to stay focused in class on their work, as we are still finalising assessment tasks this week and next. CONGRATULATIONS to Amelia Waters, Harry Searle and Abbie Glasgow who received an award at Assembly this week for their wonderful sketches of a guitar. The attention to detail and proportion was exceptional. Very clever artists!! Well done to some other students who also produced a great sketch Samantha Krause, Riley Woodall, Sam Rogers, Charlie Lockwood, Darci Towning-Wells & Brendan Haynes-Sheath. We are currently working on creating 'Groovy Guitars', which should prove to be fun and fascinating. CONGRATULATIONS also to Brendan HaynesSheath who received the Principal's Award this week for the positive contribution he makes to the St Anthony's school community. Well done, Brendan. Yr 1 EG- left! How quickly it is going, but the children still have a lot of important work to do. I have noticed that many children are still not confident with ‘left’ and ‘right’. Every day, you could be giving your child some directions that include left/right words e.g. “Put the cup on the left of the sink”. The children have now written their report on a sea turtle and have done a good job with this. Encourage your child to still think about full stops, capitals and neat writing every time they write. It seems that they just think about what they want to put down on the paper and then forget about all the other necessary parts of writing! Enjoy your week. We have been writing PREPOSITION POEMS and there have been many entertaining and clever ones written. Here is one great example: The toy car went... out of the toybox down the stairs up a ramp across the table and fell off the table along the floor through the door out of the house across the road into the gutter down in the sewers around a crocodile into a drain out of a drain into a river under a bridge down a waterfall into a fish... In previous terms we have published a timetable for all assessment pieces in the weekly newsletter, however this term the schedule was put up on the blackboard for all students to see. They were also encouraged to write this information into their diary as a reminder. As the term rolls on more responsibility is being placed on the students to encourage their independence and organisational skills. It is hoped this will continue to prepare them for High School in the not so distant future. Friendly reminder: Homework is due tomorrow – Everyday Spelling & Mathematics. Stephen Street Car Park We have had phone calls to the office in regards to safety in the car park. If your child is waiting to be picked up they must wait in the school grounds. Children must NOT run across the car park to the parked cars and caution must be taken at all times. The School (south) side of the car park is a stop/drop/go zone at pick up time and drop off time. Vehicles should not be parked here. The Stephen Street (north) side of the car park is for parking, if you park there you must exit you’re your car and walk your child to the school gate and of an afternoon meet them at the gate and walk them back to your car. Chiniquay Street Please be aware there are residents in Chiniquay Street who are affected by the way people park in their street. People are parking for long and short term periods in the “No Standing Zone” . This is hindering access to properties as well as making rubbish collect impossible. We recommend that you try and park in the Stephen or Memory Street car parks. Attention all Volunteers This is a reminder to ALL parents who volunteer in any way at St Anthony’s you MUST report to the office to read the ‘Code of Conduct for Volunteers’ document and the ‘Student Protection’ requirements BEFORE you can begin your role as a volunteer. You will then need to be signed in on any subsequent visit to the school. NO ONE is permitted to enter a classroom unless they have signed in at the office. This is for the protection of ALL children and for administration to know who is on the premises in case of fire or lockdown. Please remember that if an adult wishes to use the school amenities/ school toilets they must go to the staffroom. Parents must never use students toilets.
