EX libris February 2015 Baraboo Public Library 230 Fourth Avenue, Baraboo, WI 53913 608-356-6166 www.baraboopubliclibrary.org Volume III, Issue 2 Will you be our Valentine? Love your library? We hope you do — and that you’ll consider making a library Valentine gift this year. Your gift will last longer than roses … and have fewer calories than chocolate! We have gift trees upstairs and downstairs, with an assortment of “wishes” on paper hearts — each represents a title we’d like to acquire for everyone’s enjoyment. Your gift can be your Valentine to the library — or a donation in honor of someone special. We’ll send a handwritten Valentine card to your honoree notifying him or her of your “everlasting” present, and the item will also be labeled with a bookplate to commemorate your gift. Music with Friends: Old Soul Society This month’s free concert is Thursday, February 12, at 7pm featuring Old Soul Society. Merri Lindgren, Friends of the Library vice president and librarian at the Cooperative Children’s Book Center at the UW-Madison, says Pierre in Love by Sara Pennypacker is one of her favorite tales of romance: “Pierre may be a rat (literally) and Catherine a rabbit, but they are classic star-crossed lovers despite their species. Pierre admires Catherine from afar, but knows he isn't worthy of her. And in fact, when he does finally confess his devotion, he discovers that she loves another. Catherine has also been living in unrequited misery, certain that she doesn't measure up to the creature of her affections. Passion cloaked in two cases of mistaken identity resolves itself to the complete satisfaction of readers of all ages. Humor keeps the romance from becoming too saccharine, evidenced in priceless passages such as ‘His face melted into a loopy smile whenever he heard her name-Catherine!-or even a word that sounded like Catherine: aspirin, for example, or bathroom.’" Hats Off! Special thanks to Beth Persche, Maia Persche, and Merri Lindgren for serving coffee, tea, and cookies to our patrons at our January Fridays with Friends. This weekly hospitality service is a courtesy of the Friends of the Library, with support from patron donations. Laurie Dummer outdid herself (again!) with the lovely table setting and homemade cookies at January’s Music with Friends Concert. The wonderful treats gave the audience a chance to chat with each other and our visiting musicians, Rambler, following the concert. And that’s what Friends are for! Thank you, Laurie.
