President’s Report
®
On behalf of the new GEAR Committee, I would like to wish all members
a very happy New Year.
A very big thank you is also due to the members of last years committee for
their efforts, particularly to retiring President Barry Parsons for his fantastic
work for the club over many years and to retiring Secretary Ed Wolf for his
enormous effort in trying circumstances last year.
The December meeting was another great success with very mild weather, the track in
excellent condition and a great turnout of proper GEAR cars. We again had a wonderful team
of enthusiastic officials to make the whole day run smoothly, thank you to all of you. We also
saw many members that have been away for some time to attend the AGM at the end of the
day.
The outcome at the SGM, where the motions to change the constitution and accept Formula
V's were soundly defeated, showing that the majority of the club's members wish the club to
remain a 'Time Capsule' club for the older cars. Although many members are disappointed
with this outcome, that is the way a democracy works.
The new GEAR committee brings a wealth of experience to the team with most of the new
members being involved in Historic Racing for well over 30 years. Since the AGM in
December we have already been able to sort out dramas with the club website, look at
insurance issues and begin the process of better defining the eligibility criteria for cars to be
able to enjoy our events. The revised GEAR Classification info should be up on the club's
new website by the time you read this 'Gearbox'. It is a requirement of the constitution that all
entered cars submit a vehicle registration form; these will also be available to download from
the club website.
I must admit I was very surprised to be elected President of the club, it is a great honour and I
would like to thank all the members who have put their faith in me to steer the club in the
right direction. I hope to see you all out enjoying our old racing cars and enjoying the true
spirit of GEAR in 2015.
President Greg Snape.

CHRISTIAN CAR CAMP
Bob Armstrong is the organiser of an annual weekend "camp" for car
enthusiasts - especially old car enthusiasts enthusiastic about old cars.
The camp is a weekend of Christian fellowship and would suit those GEAR
members who either are Christian or who would not be offended in such company.
A number of GEAR Club members would know Bob. He's asked me if I
would make the "camp" known to the Club.
The location for the camp is Ridgecrest Christian Camp and Conference

The speed of Ken Reidy in the

A
fter missing a whole heap of
GEAR meetings it was magic to
return to Wakefield Park on 3
December to be greeted by so many
happy faces and big smiles; you are a
great crowd.
Instead of my MG Jewitt Special
which is having a holiday at the
moment I brought along a newly
acquired 1961 Austin Healey 3000
(BT7) which is rally rather than race
prepared to see if I could play with
Colin Goldsmith and his more modified
Healey 3000 race car. Alas, as the
results show, I was way off his pace
and tailed the field for most of the day,
taking over from Allan North in his
quite quick TR4. Back to the MG
perhaps?
cleared out early and eventually lapped
the tailenders. That was the order in
which they finished. The beautifully
prepared MGA of Austin Blanch was a
pretty sight to behold and headed the
remainder of the field. I didn’t get to
play with Colin but had a few laps
together with Allan and the TR4 before
he too cleared out leaving me to get
accustomed to the big Healey by
myself.
Event 2 was in much hotter conditions
as storm clouds gathered to the West
of us and the nominated times put
everyone to the test. Glenn was best at
it and after nominating a time of
1.13.00 put in 1.13.10 and should
have claimed the silverware if it
hadn’t been subject to the time
keepers accepting certain bribes to
see Brian Richards in his TR3A get
1st prize followed by Keith Smith
(MG Midget) and Geoff Newey
(MGB). Well done the
clockwatchers!
Event 3 began with the threat of a
major storm warning being passed
on by Patrick ‘Two Dogs’ as the
chief ‘hurry upper’ and broadcast
marshal. The time board was
exhibited as we left the dummy grid
and just how I came in 2nd behind
Austin Blanch and ahead of Colin
Goldsmith remains an enduring
mystery. Cars were hastily put onto
trailers and into garages to shelter
from the lowering cloud base and
dwindling light as the storm rolled
across the countryside.
A great day as usual; thanks to
everyone who helped to make 90 th
event so enjoyable .

he December Christmas meeting
has attracted a large field of
entrants in group C. For me, as a late
beginner in driving on a race track, a
large field tends to make me a little
nervous, however once out on the track
I find all thoughts are directed to the
job in hand and just enjoying the
wonderful opportunity that the GEAR
Club is providing.
Looking at the result sheets that Lisa
handed me I see that some drivers have
been able to get very close to their
nominated times, a feat that I imagine
would not always be easy in a large
field of cars. For myself though, just
taking on board all the tips and tricks

I
t was good to be back at GEAR
with the Sunbeam Alpine behaving
itself. A number of drivers have found
extra speed in their cars while I have
been away, quite a few seconds in
some cases, notably Brian Richards. It
will take some heroics to stay with
him in future and better tyres. The
day was very warm and humid with
some using that to explain slower
times, however the performance of
others raised questions about that
excuse. It is also possible that not
every lap was captured by the timers.
It was good to see Geoff Rose back in
that very quick Simca. It is quite a big
car to use a 1300cc motor. He also
has been away and has had some
health issues that thankfully could be
behind him now. Pogo was there and
I was looking forward to seeing how
the Sunbeam might compare after
the hassling he gave to Geoff Morse
at the last meeting. With the new
engine I now have the power to pass
him on the straight whereas the last
time we ran together I had no more
horsepower in my worn motor than
his fresher motor.
was not getting full power.
Apparently that linkage takes an
unusually convoluted path from
pedal to lone side-draft Weber, and
is difficult to readjust. So he
decided to put it on the trailer.
He has reshod the car recently with
175/60/13 Toyo proxies that he
bought for a very reasonable price.
A rep from Toyo who spoke to the
HSRCA claimed that they
were more resistant to change
from heat cycles than other tyres.
That left John Titcume to play with.
Our cars are very similar: there is no
more than 20 kilograms difference
in weight between the Sunbeam
and the Hillman; both have 1600 cc
Rootes blocks and twin Webers. The
difference is in the cylinder head,
one is alloy the other iron. John
Scott built the Hillman originally and
since he was getting 145 HP from a
1500cc MG motor with a usable rev
range of 4500 to 6500, I think the
Hillman has a well-developed
motor. Bruce Richardson has 110 HP
at the rear wheels of the Nota Minx
from a 1500cc iron-head Hillman
with twin Webbers.
Anyway it turns out the Sunbeam
has more straight line grunt; its only
disadvantage is road radials
compared to the Advans on the
Hillman. So we circulated in close
company and had a ball. John
commented that we seem to take
almost identical lines through the
corners, which is interesting
because I know I turn in a bit early
for the esses and straight line the
left-hander to right-hander going up
the hill.
John Barnett was another who I
hadn’t seen for some time and it
was good to see him there. He
alternated between groups Group D
and E in the MGB Sebring Replica
In the first event we entered the
straight with him a long way ahead,
but I gave it a go and we went
through the kink side by side. It
turned out however that his throttle
linkage was out of adjustment and he
®

and picked up a place in each group. Tony Todd had the
misfortune to break a gear lever in his MGB. That still
left an interesting field notably among others were
Leanne Boardman in the Ford V8 Coupe, Dave Parker in
a Milano Triumph and Geoff Goldsmith learning the
ropes in Colin’s Austin Healey 3000. Colin affirmed that
he was not allowed to best him.
In the first event, Santa Claus remembered, John
Barnett received first place, then myself and John
Titcume. I doubt that any gifts were involved. For the
Christmas Capers nominated-time event, first should
have been me (others were also close to their times)
but Allan Bare was next followed by Leane and Geoff
Goldsmith. The final event, Reindeer Park Alive, finished
just ahead of a fast approaching storm. Wind gusts
from the storm buffeted cars and consequently helped
or hindered corner speed depending on wind direction.
Though we were combined with Group E, place-getters
were all from Group D, namely Geoff Goldsmith
followed by Carl Stevenson and Leigh Bowman.

roup “E” was a very small group this meeting,
consisting of Clint Badewitz in the Donington
Riley, Jeff Benley in an MGB, Rowland Martin driving
Rod Joyce’s “Nisprite” and myself with the TR3A. Not
sure if John Barnett came to play in this group with his
new MGB “Sebring” replica, but I know I was on the
circuit with him at some time during the meeting.
I elected to drive with this group at this meeting, as it
was the first time back for the TR for some years, and I
wasn’t too sure how the new engine was going to hold
up in competition, although it had successfully conveyed
me to Perth WA only seven weeks earlier. Consequently
I stuck to a strict 4000 rpm limit, and maintained top
gear around the course for all but the “fishhook” and the
final turn onto the straight, concentrating on getting the
lines right and drifting using throttle control, my lap
times were only 4 or 5 seconds off my usual pace, and
given that this engine is not nearly as developed as my
old engine, I guess I must have been doing something
right.
I didn’t get to see too much of the other guys, and I think
the Riley failed to proceed after the first event, at any
rate I think there were only three of us in event 2, so
Jeff, John and I were quite happy to do the last event in
group “D” and save some time as it was going to be a
busy afternoon. Didn’t get to find out any results, but did
speak to Rowland and Jeff after the events, and they had
a good time and were quite pleased with themselves.
John also was quite pleased with the MG “Sebring”, and
it will be interesting to see if it is accepted as an invited
car. It would also be good to see John’s Buchanan back
in the fray.

Event & Supplementary Regulations
Wakefield Park – 11th February 2015
1. The event will be organised by the Golden Era Auto Racing Club Inc, 4 Joy Street Cardiff 2285 Ph: 0419609617 in conjunction
with Inner Product Pty Ltd.
If you are planning on driving, you need to advise of your entry by contacting Lisa Tobin-Smith.
Phone: (02) XXXXXXXX / 0419 609 617 Email: [email protected] Post: GEAR Club Inc., 4 Joy Street Cardiff 2285
We need to know: Name of DRIVER/S; CAR (INCLUDING YEAR); NUMBER & COLOUR; LAP TIME for Wakefield Park.
ENTRIES CLOSE - Sunday 8th February 2015
2. We invite entries from all members and potential members of GEAR Club with suitable Historic pre-war and post-war racing cars,
sports cars manufactured prior to 1961 (or run-ons) and sedan cars up to 1958, as well as other vehicles as per GEAR Club Inc
Eligibility. Sedan cars from 1959 to 1963 (or run-ons) will be at the discretion of the GEAR Committee.
Drivers who are not GEAR members are invited to enter ONE meeting prior to applying for GEAR membership. (Cost of GEAR
membership is $30 per year.)
All drivers will be required to hold a current motor vehicle driver’s licence as well as a Level 2 AASA licence or a competition licence
issued by any recognised Motor Sport authority.
The organisers reserve the right to refuse any entry without assigning a reason.
NB: No driver under 17 years of age is permitted to compete in this event.
ENTRY FEE (including GST) will be $130 per driver. There is no reduction in fee for a second driver in the same car. Entry fees
will be payable to Wakefield Park upon completion of the Indemnity at sign-on.
GEAR encourages applications for events from potential participants. However, any application is considered by the GEAR
Committee, and/or GEAR officials delegated authority by the Committee, as no more than an indication of interest in participating in
the event as specified. The GEAR Committee, and/or GEAR officials delegated authority by the Committee shall, at their absolute
discretion, on receipt of an application to participate, issue an invitation on behalf of GEAR to participate. This invitation will be
verbal for Eligible cars and written for Invited cars. No person can participate in any event without receipt of such invitation.
2a. INVITED CARS - Should total car entries be oversubscribed for the grid positions available within a Group at the meeting, then
Invited cars would forego their invitation in favour of the Eligible cars. Invited cars will be asked to forego their invitation on a last on/
first off basis from their notification to run with the Event Secretary. The event organisers will make every effort to move Invited cars
to another Group for the day if this can be done safely for all entrants.
3. SCRUTINEERING - All cars will be scrutineered before participating. A fire extinguisher to AS1846 or AS1848 or AS1841
(Min .9Kg capacity) must be securely fitted in the car. An oil breather catch tank of at least l litre capacity must be fitted. Each
carburettor must have a throttle return spring fitted, set up so throttle returns to idle if linkage slips or breaks. Sump gearbox and diff
plugs need to be wired or tightened in presence of scrutineer. Front opening bonnets require a secondary catch system to prevent
bonnet lifting in the event of original catch failure. Headlight lenses are to be taped or covered to prevent glass breakage by flying
stones. Scrutineering will take place in the pit garages prior to the first event.
4. CARS WITHOUT ROLLBARS - may be accepted but the intention to participate should be notified before the next GEAR
meeting as a list of approved cars and drivers is maintained by the Club. Contact Lisa Tobin-Smith (0419 609 617)
or Bill Revill (0412191356) for details.
5. PROTESTS - There will be no protests. This is a day of safe, enjoyable motor sport. Don’t come if you want to protest.
6. PROGRAM - Time will be allocated for testing, driver training and non-competitive events.
7. OVERTAKING - The full use of mirrors is particularly important. The organisers will pay special attention to any baulking or
tendency towards over driving. (See points 1 and 5 of the attached Members’ & Participants’ Code.)
8. HELMETS, GOGGLES, CLOTHING AND HARNESS - All drivers must wear approved helmets (to AS1698). A minimum
standard of leather shoes, gloves and neck to ankle to wrist clothing of a non-synthetic nature is required. We recommend that a
higher standard of protective clothing be worn, where possible. Goggles with approved lenses must be worn at all times by the
drivers of open cars (unless wearing full face helmets). Please submit these articles for approval with the car at Scrutineering.
Drivers MUST be fully dressed in protective clothing at the time of taking their cars to the marshalling area.
9. NOISE - Remember that there are noise restrictions at Wakefield Park. All cars must be fitted with effective mufflers. The
organisers may exclude any car if it is deemed by the organisers to be excessively noisy.
10. TIMING AND LAP SCORING - will be carried out by the group of enthusiastic helpers. Lap times are taken solely for the
purposes of grading the starting order of cars and for allocating penalty points against nominated target lap times. They are
recorded to the nearest second on a random sampling basis and are generally only available to participants when necessary for an
event.
®
18
11. MARKINGS ON CARS - It would be helpful if cars display their regular competition numbers. However we can cope with cars
without a number (provided they are different colours or otherwise easily distinguishable).
12. STARTING POSITIONS in each event will be decided by the Organisers or their nominees following testing.
13. STARTING PROCEDURE - All Events will be started with the Green Safety Flag. Cars will be started in rows of two with a time
interval of at least two seconds between each row for some events, or one at a time for others. The full procedure will be reviewed
at the Drivers Briefing.
14. A DRIVERS BRIEFING will be held prior to commencement of the events. Attendance by all drivers is compulsory. There will
also be a special briefing for any new competitor who has no prior circuit competition experience.
15. ALCOHOLIC LIQUOR - Consumption of alcoholic liquor by drivers or pit crew is forbidden in any area prior to the completion
of the meeting. Such consumption is forbidden for anyone in the pit or paddock area at any time during the conduct of the Meeting.
16. A Wakefield Park INDEMNIFICATION FORM must be completed by the driver at time of entering for the events. The onus is
on the Owner/driver to ensure that any driver of his car has completed this indemnity.
17. FUEL. Only ET102 is available at the Circuit.
18. LOCATION OF CIRCUIT. Wakefield Park is approximately 10 Km from Goulburn on the Braidwood Road.
19. FURTHER/FINAL INSTRUCTIONS. The organisers reserve the right to issue Further Event Regulations and/or Instructions to
Drivers, and these shall be of the same effect as these Regulations. The organisers also reserve the right to postpone or cancel the
Event.
20. NO WORK may be carried out on cars on the Circuit or Dummy Grid Area. Cars requiring work must return to paddock.
21. INSURANCE. People assisting or spectating at Wakefield Park are automatically insured through the various standing policies
of Australian Auto Sport Alliance. These policies are available through arrangement with the Circuit.
22. DRIVER ATTITUDES. Any driver (or pit crew) not exercising the appropriate attitude at this Event may not be invited to
compete in future GEAR Club Inc activities.
23. QUALIFIED MEDICAL PERSONNEL will be in attendance.
24. Maximum difference in lap time shall not exceed 25% of the nominated lap time of the slowest car in that event.
MEMBERS’ AND PARTICIPANTS’ CODE – GEAR CLUB DAYS ©
GEAR Club Inc Drive Days are organised specifically to provide members with the opportunity for the sheer enjoyment and
pleasure of their old racing and sports cars in a safe, affordable, regulated and social motor sport environment. It is therefore the
personal responsibility of each and every member and participant to ensure that all of their fellow members share equally in the
enjoyment of the day, regardless of the age and/or performance of their respective cars and/or the track skills and/or circuit
experience of their fellow drivers.
In order to encourage these important aims and noting that safety is our prime criteria, the Club recommends the following
Participants’ Code of Driving Behaviour:
1. At all times the safety and well-being of fellow drivers and the preservation of their historic cars shall be the predominant
consideration.
2. Club Days will include a Driver Training Period with experienced observers offering advice and guidance to participants.
3. Cars will be scrutineered for safety. A driver should only participate in an event if his/her car is fully mechanically prepared and
he/she is personally fit and of a sound temperament.
4. Club Days are not race days. Overdriving or balking will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
5. Drivers should continually observe their mirrors for faster and overtaking cars. The faster car must be permitted to pass in
safety, with the driver of the slower car signalling and moving to open the line for the faster car. The driver of the faster car should
like wise then respond and acknowledge the gesture.
6. Approaching a corner, the leading “on-line” car shall have the right to that corner. The following car shall not “dive under” into the
corner, but must concede and wait until the exit before passing the slower car.
7. Any participant considered to be offending the Code of Driving Behaviour may be immediately excluded from an event and may
not be invited to future events.
Unlike formal Race Meetings with paid Officials or otherwise, the running and success of our Days depends entirely on the input of
members. To ensure the full enjoyment of all members, particularly those of the Committee who organise the event but also wish to
drive their cars, it is incumbent on all participants to freely volunteer of their time for some period to assist in the manning of flag
points, recovery vehicles, grid marshalling and similar.
Do the right thing – Get into the spirit of GEAR
Enjoy the cars – Soak up the atmosphere
Relax and be social – Have a great day
