Why
We’re Here
FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
FOR
HEALTHY LIVING
FOR
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Nurturing the potential of every child and teen
We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what
they can achieve. That’s why, through the YMCA, millions of youth today are cultivating
the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and
educational achievement.
Improving our community’s health and well-being
In neighborhoods across the five boroughs, the YMCA is a leading voice on health
and well-being. The Y brings families closer together, encourages good health and
fosters connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. As a result,
nearly 400,000 youth, adults and families are receiving the support, guidance and
resources needed to achieve greater health and well-being for their spirit, mind
and body.
Giving back and providing support to our neighbors
The YMCA has been listening and responding to New York City’s most critical social
needs for 160 years. Whether developing skills or emotional well-being through
education and training, welcoming and connecting diverse demographic populations
through global services, or preventing chronic disease and building healthier
communities through collaborations with policymakers, the Y fosters the care and
respect all people need and deserve.
We’re Here for Good. It’s been the signature phrase of New York City’s YMCA since early 2008, and it describes the Y’s
commitment to building the foundations of—and strengthening—our communities, through nurturing the potential of every
child and teen, improving community health and well-being and providing opportunities to give back and support neighbors.
We’re here for you and your family. We’re here for the community. We’re here for good.

GET ENGAGED
We know firsthand how difficult it can be to find balance in life. That’s why we’re here with you every day,
making sure that you, your family and our community have the resources and support needed to learn,
grow and thrive.
With a focus on developing the potential of kids, improving health and well-being, and giving back and
supporting our neighbors, your participation will not just bring about meaningful change in yourself, but in
your community too. Here are some of the ways you can get involved.

Volunteer Opportunities

bringing about meaningful, enduring change right in your
own neighborhood. As a program committee volunteer,
board member or Strong Kids Campaign fundraiser, you can
make a difference in our Y and the Community as a whole.

everyone
is welcome
We’re proud to ensure that the YMCA is accessible to everyone, and we never want anyone to be turned
away for an inability to pay. Don’t hesitate to ask about financial assistance for programs or membership.
We’re happy to help.
We’re able to open our doors to all thanks to a community of generous supporters to our annual Strong Kids
Campaign. Contributions to Strong Kids enable us to offer a number of our programs and services at low or no
cost, and to make assistance available to make participation affordable.
The Y is more than a membership card. We’re bigger than the programs we offer in our facility or around the
community. Will you help us as a donor or volunteer fundraiser to ensure that everyone can be a part of the Y?

Swim for Life
The YMCA of Greater New York in collaboration with the NYC
Department of Education, the New York City Department of Parks
& Recreation and Asphalt Green sponsor the “Swim for Life”
program. The focus of “Swim For Life” is to teach second grade
students basic aquatic skills to make them safer in and around the
water. Achieving competency in and around water can result in a
number of positive outcomes:
•
Save children’s lives
•
Enhance their enjoyment of water activities
•
Provide a means to improve their overall fitness
•
Build self-awareness through the mastery of a life skill
We are targeting second grade students for participation in one of
the three ten-week sessions given in a school year. The program
operates during the school day and each child will receive weekly
aquatic instruction. In order to encourage students to practice/
enjoy their newly developed skills during OST (Out of School Time),
participants will receive an application for a “Strong Kid’s Card”
which allows specific practice time at branches.

Private swim lessons offer more individualized
attention and more specific skill development. Working
with an instructor one-on-one can help you prepare for a

Teen Programs
For young people ages 12-17
Today’s teens are tomorrow’s leaders. Y teen programs
offer New York City young people a forum to be heard.
Through civic engagement program, health and fitness
activities and special interest clubs, teens can connect
with their peers while giving back to their community. At
the Y, we work every day to help teens set and achieve
their personal and educational goals. As a result, NYC
teens gain confidence as they recognize the Y as a place
where they belong and can feel comfortable exploring
new interests and passions. Through our leadership and
academic enrichment programs, the Y makes sure that
every teen has an opportunity to envision and pursue a
positive future, and to take an active role in strengthening
his or her community.
Teen Hours 3-8pm weekdays. Teens may use the
facility after 8pm Monday to Friday and on weekends
only with parental supervision.
Teen Membership
Come out and show your skills on our basketball court,
work out in our fitness center or just hang out with friends
in our lounge. A fitness orientation must be completed by
all teens before using the cardio area. Teen membership
curfew is 8pm.
Youth & Government
Youth & Government lets young people experience how
our nation’s democratic process works from the inside out.
Starting with issues that stir their passions, teens learn to
debate public policy, write legislation and (simulate) taking
over the State Legislature in Albany. Proposed legislation
originating with Youth & Government participants has gone
on to be presented by actual legislators and signed into
New York State Law. Organized in 1936 in the State of New
York, the YMCA Youth & Government Program is now a
national program of the YMCA held in 38 states with more
than 46,000 students from all walks of life involved. Free
Leaders Club & Jr. Leaders Club
You can meet many of tomorrow’s leaders today at the
YMCA Leaders Club, a leadership incubation program that
gives teens the opportunity to learn to become more
effective in their interactions with others. Teens improve
their individual leadership and social skills while also
experiencing new ways to give back and grow as human
beings. Teens meet on a weekly basis in small groups to
develop and implement projects aimed at providing valuable
service to their local community. Free

Teens Take the City
Teens Take the City is a dynamic leadership development
program that offers NYC teens the opportunity to roll up
their sleeves and get involved in issues affecting them and
their community. Teens engage in community mapping to
figure out how to better their community, work in small
groups to identify a law to address the issue, develop a
policy proposal that is debated for other teens at City
Hall, learn the history and function of NYC government,
and meet and interview a NYC official. Once students have
developed a policy proposal, they will implement their
initiatives in their community through youth-lead service
learning activities. Talk about social responsibility at its
best! Free
Teen After School Program
Every Teen Center is unique, but all run on weekday and
weekend evenings and offer: recreation such as pool
tables, ping pong, computer labs or video games; sports
leagues and open gym for basketball, soccer and other
sports; health and fitness activities, including access to
free weights and fitness equipment; academic support such
as tutoring and homework help; counseling like applying to
college or looking for financial aid to pay for college; and
service learning opportunities such as volunteering. Free
Global Teens
Global Teens is an international exchange and service
learning program which encourages teens to step outside
the comfortable surroundings of their home country and
embark on a deep, inspirational and impactful journey of
personal growth and global exploration for teens ages 13
to 18. Teens are selected through an intensive application
and interview process. Each travel group participates
in overseas and NYC area service projects focused on a
specific social issue, such as food injustice, environmental
awareness, human rights, freedom of expression, HIV/
AIDS prevention, diabetes prevention and more. Through
a year-long commitment, teens are able to positively and
powerfully interact with the global community.

Mentoring Program
High School Students
The Mentor program connects motivated New York City
teens with acknowledged successful professional adults
to realize their full potential through a variety of academic
and social resources and experiences. Mentors have
been recognized as Black Achievers in Industry at the
Harlem YMCA’s Annual Awards Ceremony, referred by a
Black Achiever Alum, or recommended by their respective
corporations to participate in this program. Mentors
are linked with mentees based on mentee’s career goal
and Mentor’s area of expertise, as well as their common
hobbies/personal interests. Mentors and Mentees develop
their own schedule of educational, social and recreational
activities, based on their mutual schedules, and participate
in a host of YMCA events during the school year that
nurture a mentoring relationship. Mentors are encouraged
to assist the YMCA in the efforts of conducting quality
workshops and seminars, which focus on college readiness

THE WHOLE
PERSON
HEALTH & WELL-BEING
FOR CANCER SURVIVORS
The Y and LIVESTRONG joined together to create
LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a physical activity and
well-being program designed to help adult cancer
survivors achieve their holistic health goals. The
research-based program offers people affected by
cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in
physical and social activities focused on strengthening
the whole person.
Participants work with Y staff trained in supportive
cancer care to achieve their goals, such as building
muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and
endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem.
In addition to physical benefits, LIVESTRONG at the
YMCA focuses on the emotional well-being of survivors
and their families by providing a supportive community
where people impacted by cancer can connect during
treatment and beyond.

The Harlem Y offers health and wellness, aquatics, and
dance programs, as well as top-notch exercise and weight
training equipment, saunas, and steam-rooms. We have
developed outstanding programs in a fun, safe and caring
environment. Our youth activities, for kids and teens’ ages
3-17, include after-school, arts & crafts, sports, health,
leadership, and summer camp programs. We also have an
excellent aquatics program for infants - 17 years of age.
In addition to our many services, we provide Kids Space
and Kids Gym for children with Memberships or Family
Memberships. It provides a safe place for young children
to play or read books while parents are working out in the
facility. The program has knowledgeable and caring on-duty
supervisors, and the convenient service is available for up
to 2-full hours per visit. Call our Membership Desk, and ask
about the program schedule.
Along with good nutrition and eating habits, the benefits
of exercise are unlimited. A regular routine of physical
activity has been attributed to lowering the incidences of
heart attacks, and strokes caused by hypertension. And it
is an excellent means of weight-control, and building bone
strength for everyone—kids to older adults. And for your
convenience, all of our programs are in 8-week sessions.
