We enter Washburn’s 130th year knowing that our work is more relevant than ever before.
The American Medical Association reports that the top five health concerns affecting U.S.
children are mental health problems, not physical problems. Because of YOU, more than
2,700 children received critical early mental health intervention last year.
We stand on the crux of an exciting new chapter in Washburn’s history. In partnership with
the community, we’ve raised more than three-fourths of our $21 million capital campaign
to build a new facility that will expand children’s mental health services for Twin Cities
families. This one-of-a-kind children’s mental health center will help meet the growing
needs of our community, train clinicians in best practices and support future generations
of healthy, productive children.
As you read about Washburn’s 2012 accomplishments, we hope you are reminded that
your support of children’s mental health is a wise investment in our community’s social
and economic future. You are helping children reach their potential by decreasing their
chances of failing in school or becoming involved in the juvenile justice system. Whether
it’s the 65-year-old business executive served here 58 years ago, or the 11-year-old who more

Doug’s journey offers struggling families hope and illustrates the
power of early mental health intervention.
His mom became concerned about his escalating behavior early
on — not every second grader threw globs of glue across the classroom
in frustration. She proactively sought help from experts at a
local university with no avail; one diagnosis noted his learning
disabilities and suggested she lower her expectations for her son’s
potential. Unwilling to give up hope, she brought Doug to Washburn.
Doug credits Washburn’s comprehensive diagnostic assessment as
a turning point in his life because it more accurately pinpointed a
complex diagnosis of learning problems and, most importantly, defined
strategies for Doug to cope with his learning and behavioral challenges.
“Without Washburn’s clear, accurate diagnosis, all the remediation in
the world wouldn’t have helped me,” Doug said.
Like so many other children with mental health problems, Doug’s
challenges impacted his ability to be successful in school, at home
and in the community. In Doug’s words, things “started to click” in
sixth grade when he finally learned how to read. And he’s excelled
ever since: he graduated from Williams College and completed
an MBA from St. Thomas, became a corporate executive in two
Fortune 1000 businesses, owns his own consulting business and
even served on Washburn’s board in the 1970s.
Washburn not only changed the trajectory of my life, he says,
“Washburn saved my life.”

Our mission:
To help children with social, emotional and
behavioral problems, and their families,
lead successful lives
Our clients:
• 2,705 children ages birth – 18 and
approximately 7,200 family members
• 55% of children served came from
families with low incomes
• 54% were children of color
Our outcomes:
• Washburn’s therapists use the Global
Assessment of Functioning (GAF) scale before
and after treatment to determine a child’s
progress and ability to function at school and
in social or family settings. After 16 or more
therapeutic sessions at Washburn, 82% of
children improved their score.
• 97% of parents responding to a satisfaction survey
said that Washburn’s professionals listened
and understood what their family needed.
• Agency-wide scores on the Strengths and
Difficulties Questionnaire — a brief behavioral
screening completed by parents or teachers
to determine a child’s progress — reflected
clinically meaningful improvement, with
children improving in their: emotional distress,
behavioral difficulties, hyperactivity, peer
problems and impact of difficulties.

When children with social, emotional and
behavioral challenges receive early intervention,
they have happier childhoods and are less likely
to fail academically or need expensive remedial

drawing of a green rocket ship, complete with red flames,
is proudly displayed on Teresa and Brad Hassing’s
refrigerator. It might seem like ordinary artwork, but for the
Hassings, it’s a daily reminder of how far their 11-year-old adopted
son Ezekiel has come.
Ezekiel’s early drawings used only the color black — and stick figures
with ghoulish faces reflected his turbulent past.
The trauma of being abandoned by his birth mother and entering
foster care at age five left Ezekiel full of anger and rage. Even in the
stability of the Hassing’s home, he struggled and at one point lit a fire
in his bedroom.
“It was very scary for us,” Teresa said. “In anger, he would throw chairs
at us or his teachers.”
Calls from the school about his disruptive behavior became routine, and
when he was on the verge of being expelled, Ezekiel entered Washburn’s
Day Treatment program — a therapeutic classroom where children learn
self-regulation skills to be successful in a mainstream school.
With the help of intensive therapy, a different Ezekiel emerged.
As experts in children’s mental health, Washburn’s staff uses innovative,
best practices — such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy,
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and Developmental
Repair — to help children like Ezekiel develop new skills for a fresh start.
“Thinking about how far Ezekiel has come is a miracle; you wouldn’t
believe he’s the same child,” Teresa said proudly.
It’s a transformation that Washburn hopes for all of the children it
serves — Ezekiel’s journey happens to be marked by joyful artwork
and a smile that lights up a room.

• Experienced significant momentum in our $21 million capital campaign to build
a new facility by purchasing land in Minneapolis’ Harrison Neighborhood and
developing design plans to create a unique healing environment for children
• Honored as a Star Tribune Top Workplace for a second consecutive year
•Recognized Steve Lepinski’s 25th year as Washburn’s Executive Director
and celebrated him being named the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits
“Transformational Leader”
• Trained 77 undergraduate and graduate interns and postdoctoral fellows in the
best practices of children’s mental health
• Enhanced clinical expertise in early childhood mental health and
childhood trauma through ongoing training, in Trauma-Focused Cognitive
Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), DC: Zero to Three, and Eye Movement
Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR); additionally, two clinicians enrolled
in University of Minnesota’s Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health intensive
three-year certificate program
• Expanded the Day Treatment program by adding pre- and after-care services
to help increase children’s stability
• Launched a new agency web site, in partnership with Orangeseed, to offer
expanded resources for families
• Partnered with WCCO TV to increase awareness about children’s mental health

Washburn Games
The third annual Washburn Games united 225
children and their families, 180 volunteers and many
corporate sponsors around children’s mental health.
The noncompetitive sports sampler netted $67,000
and illustrated that children’s mental health is as
important their physical health.
Helping Hands for Kids
Golf Tournament
Golfers at the 27th annual Helping Hands for Kids
Golf Tournament teed up at The Minikahda Club to
support a critical community issue. Their generosity,
along with numerous corporate sponsors, netted
more than $96,000 in support of children’s
mental health.

Capital Campaign Momentum
In response to the community’s increasing mental health needs, Washburn has partnered
with the community to construct a one-of-a-kind children’s mental health center that will
support future generations of healthy, productive children.
Significant strides have been made in the capital campaign: $12.7 million was raised in
2012, bringing the total donations secured to more than three-fourths of the $21 million
goal. Construction is expected to begin in Fall 2013.
The “Creating Space for Young Minds to Heal and Grow” campaign will enhance and
expand Washburn’s services. One in five children experience mental health challenges, but
only 20% of these struggling children receive treatment. While Washburn has doubled the
number of children served, its existing building cannot accommodate additional growth.
Milestones in 2012 include:
• purchased a 2.5 acre parcel of land for the new site, located on Glenwood and
Dupont Avenues in Minneapolis’ Harrison Neighborhood
• received a generous $4.8 million commitment from the Peter J. King Family Foundation
• allocation of $5 million through the state bonding bill as legislators recognized the need
for a children’s mental health center
• created design plans which will offer an enhanced healing environment
and incorporate natural elements
The new facility will provide a healing, therapeutic environment and train
therapists in best practices of children’s mental health so children in our
community can receive the highest quality mental health care possible.
