FAMILY DANCE PRESENTS THCA SEASON ELEVEN SALUTE TO THE ARTS SEASON 11 Dear THCA Patron, As Executive Director of the Thrasher-Horne Center for the Arts, it gives me great pleasure to announce the season that ushers in the next decade for this wonderful cultural arts facility. This 11th season is filled with exciting and engaging performances that will make your experience at the THCA as entertaining and enriching as possible. Opening our season on a high musical note is the return of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. Included in our season are Broadway musicals, concerts, dance performances and theatrical dramatic offerings. 4 In February, the THCA is excited to present dance week. Beginning with the return performance of a THCA audience favorite, the Russian National Ballet Theatre in Don Quixote, dance week continues with community residency and outreach activities conducted by the acclaimed Eisenhower Dance Company. Their Motown In Motion performance will conclude dance week with a cameo appearance featuring community performers. Performances by Tango Buenos Aires and the Koresh Dance Company make this a notable season for THCA audiences to fall in love with the art of dance! In the Studio Theatre we welcome back some of the THCA’s favorite performers. Fans of classical music will enjoy these relaxing Sunday afternoon concerts including Donna Wissinger, Ayako Yonetani, Stephen Robinson and select ensembles from the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. A personal highlight for this season is the American Solider exhibition. For residents and visitors to Clay County, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view this internationally renowned photographic exhibit. In creating a true cultural arts experience, I have selected several main stage performances that honor not only our military service men and women, but also their families. 15 As your Executive Director for the first decade, it has been both my duty and privilege to steward the THCA and remain true to our mission of providing the very best of the cultural arts to the citizens, students and visitors of Clay County and Northeast Florida. I will forever be indebted to the vision of St. Johns River State College President Emeritus Dr. Robert L. McLendon and the College Board of Trustees. Now my tenure as the THCA Executive Director ends … and my beginning as a THCA patron begins. It gives me GREAT pleasure to know that I will be seated in the audience with you, enjoying and experiencing the next decade of growth and excitement that will be . . . the Thrasher-Horne Center for the Arts! Griffin Theatre LETTERS HOME SAT URD AY , N OVEMBER 22 – 7:3 0 P . M. Tickets starting at $15.00 While attending this performance, please make your plans to allow time to visit The American Soldier exhibit located in the THCA galleries. Letters Home puts the current wars in Afghanistan and Iraq front and center by bringing to life actual letters written by soldiers serving in the Middle East. The play gives audiences a powerful portrait of the soldier experience. Although the title of the play implies that all the letters are from soldiers, the piece includes a small number of correspondences from parents - their words being no less important. These letters were written under the most difficult of circumstances; the disorientation of training, deployment, separation from family and loved ones, and combat and occupation duties in Afghanistan and Iraq. They help define for the audience patriotism, and what it means to serve our country today, through acts of bravery, compassion, social responsibility, sense of community and brotherhood. Collectively the production gives a voice to a generation that went to war against terror in Afghanistan and in Iraq. More importantly, the play reveals the humanity that lies within the war as seen through the eyes of the men and women fighting it. 11 7 JINGLE BELL ROCK SAT U R D AY , D EC EMB ER 1 3 - 7: 30 P.M. With his servant Sancho Panza as his armor-bearer, he travels to Barcelona, only to mistake Kitri, an innkeeper’s daughter who is in love with a barber, for his dream-lover Dulcinea. A dance-packed feast of comedy, drama, romance, intrigue, betrayal and fantasy, Minkus’ rousing 18 14 score endows each scene with rich atmosphere. The Russian National Ballet Theatre was founded in Moscow during the transitional period of Perestroika in the late 1980s, when many of the great dancers and choreographers of the Soviet Union’s ballet institutions were exercising their new-found creative freedom by starting new, vibrant companies dedicated not only to the timeless tradition of classical Russian Ballet, but to invigorate this tradition as the Russians began to accept new developments in the dance from around the world. The idea for the exhibition dates to 1995, when curator Cyma Rubin was inspired by a photograph of a World War II G.I. that appeared on the cover of the New York Times Magazine. In examining more than 4,000 photographs covering nearly 150 years of American military history, the exhibition focuses on the real lives of American soldiers - Army troops and Marines through the nine major wars in which America has fought since 1861. One hundred sixteen photographs were chosen - many of them not widely seen before-that tell the story of American soldiers’ camaraderie, courage, humor and sacrifice. The greatly enlarged photographs provide an up-close view of our servicemen and women soldiering. The exhibition is both commemorative and educational, giving children and young adults a vivid picture of just how much today’s soldiers and their predecessors have given us. Additionally, THE AMERICAN SOLDIER, A Photographic Tribute from the Civil War to the War in Iraq, celebrates the contributions made by photojournalists who risk danger at the frontlines, and without whose work we could not experience these moments of history. It opened in 2007 and is exhibited in Presidential libraries, museums, historical centers, universities, and convention centers throughout the United States, with more than 1 million visitors to date. Curator Cyma Rubin is a Tony and Emmy award producer, director, writer and president of Business of Entertainment Inc. Among her Broadway producing credits is the award-winning smash-hit revival of “No, No, Nanette”, which received six Tony nominations and won four Tony Awards. She produced educational programs for Pepsi, CBS Movies-of-the-Week and documentaries for Japanese television. She won the Emmy for best documentary for her production: “Moment of Impact: Stories of the Pulitzer Prize Photographs.” THE AMERICAN SOLDIER 27 ARTS EDUCATION AT THCA SUPPORT EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AT THE THCA Through the generous support of season members, the THCA is able to offer a broad range of educational presentations and continue its commitment to enriching the lives of students through its School Time Series and Young Masters visual arts exhibits.
