David Moore Mikelle Moore Robert Rendón Robert Rose Paul Tew Scott Ulbrich Mike Zuhl Administration: Douglas F. Goldsmith, Ph.D., Executive Director Kristina Hindert, M.D., Medical Director Karen Hansen, M.B.A., Administrative Director Courtney Garay, B.S., Development Director From our Chair The past two years have been an amazing period of time for The Children’s Center. We have had the chance to truly experience dreams coming true. Our first dream came true in November of 2008 with the completion of our $13 million capital and endowment campaign. This effort was completed in part due to the amazing efforts and commitment of Jesselie and Scott Anderson who headed up our efforts to complete this Campaign for a New Children’s Center. Their oversight and determination helped us see the reality of achieving our most ambitious endeavor ever. Our trustees, along with many volunteers, have worked tirelessly to guarantee the success of reaching our campaign goal. Reaching this goal ensured that we could create a new home for The Children’s Center that will be able to serve the many families with young children in our community who need the promise of a better future. Our second dream came true the First of July 2009, when the staff of The Children’s Center were able to move into an amazing, beautiful, Gold LEED certified, brand new Children’s Center at the historic Oquirrh School. This building has exceeded everyone’s wildest expectations. The teams at Big-D Construction and ajc architects delivered to The Children’s Center a building everyone can be truly proud of, and did it under budget. Scott Ulbrich’s tireless efforts helped to achieve the added bonus of $1.89 million in tax credits that will be realized by The Center over the next five years. These amazing dreams could not have become reality without the efforts and commitment of so many individuals. I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of our Trustees. Each Board member made large contributions of time, energy and personal investments in our campaign which assured our success. I also want to thank our benefit committee, which was chaired by Marcy and Davis Mullholand, for their tireless efforts in making our annual benefit an evening we will all remember, and amazingly successful even in the light of very difficult economic circumstances. Most importantly, I want to thank our list of over 750 contributors whose generous contributions made a new Children’s Center possible. I have truly been honored to have the joy of sitting as the Board Chair during this amazing time of transformation. I have been fortunate to be able to associate with our incredible board members; they each bring so much talent, knowledge, enthusiasm and wisdom to this Board. I have loved working with the staff of The Children’s Center who work tirelessly for the benefit of the children served by The Center. I am forever amazed that so much gets done by so few individuals. Thank you for the great honor to serve as the Board Chair during this amazing time. With gratitude, Sue Alder Chair, Board of Trustees Annual Report | 2008-2009 -1- Set your Heart on something small... From the Executive Director While keeping a close eye on a week of torrential thunderstorms, The Children’s Center’s staff packed up books, toys, training materials, and decades of client information as we prepared for our first move in 34 years. The hallways were stacked with boxes, packaging tape was strewn everywhere, and it became progressively more challenging to find the materials needed just to carry on our normal work. And then the day finally came! We watched with great anticipation as the huge Bailey’s Moving Van backed into the parking lot. The staff didn’t stop running for five full days! And despite a significant interruption while we waited for a downpour to stop, we were ready for business on Monday morning, July 6, 2009! The completion of a project of this scope by a relatively small agency requires the efforts of an entire community. As soon as we made the decision to embark on a campaign, we hired Bob Evans, from EHL Consulting, to guide us through the details of a capital campaign. Using the help of trustees and community volunteers, under the guidance of Scott and Jesselie Anderson, our Campaign Chairs, we worked tirelessly to ensure that we could raise the funds needed to realize the dream of the Oquirrh School as our new home. To the over 750 foundations, businesses, and individuals who provided the means to create this new home we extend our deepest gratitude. It’s also time for us to thank the people who truly got their hands dirty to bring life back to a school building established in 1894. From the team at ajc architects to the construction crew of Big-D Construction we are truly indebted. There are so many people to thank that to do so adequately we could have filled over double the pages of this annual report. As all who have toured the building can attest, the finished project is breathtaking. Several of the children who attend our Therapeutic Preschool Program have begun to affectionately refer to it as their “castle!” But as the construction dust has begun to settle and staff has come to feel at home in their offices, we are now reminded of the real work that this building allows us to achieve. In the early hours of the work day the children in our Therapeutic Preschool Program climb the staircases to begin learning how to manage their emotions and Douglas Goldsmith, Ph.D. Executive Director to accomplish something Big! -2- learn to make friends. Women and children from the YWCA’s emergency shelter next door make their way over to our Center in order to get the help needed to repair their broken lives. Families with children diagnosed with autism find relief in the new social skills groups, and parents with toddlers enjoy the new clinical space that houses their groups. In this annual report, we highlight some of those who helped make our dreams a reality. But we also try to give you a sense of the true work that will transpire in these spaces that will truly help change lives. Since we now have the room to expand our clinical services, the Oquirrh School allows us to truly become a beacon of hope to all of the young children and families who need our help. And with your continued support, for which we are deeply grateful, we will be able to do so for a very long time. Annual Report | 2008-2009 -3- Set your heart on something small... After four years of planning, fund raising and construction, we indeed accomplished something Big! On July 6, 2009, the eastside Children’s Center relocated from our home of 34 years on the University of Utah campus to downtown Salt Lake City. Our new home is located in the historic Oquirrh School, and we take great pride in the fact that we are the first non-profit in Utah to own a historic, Gold LEED Certified building. This certification reflects our commitment to the environment, but even more importantly ensures a building that supports the physical well being of the children entrusted to our care. At the conclusion of the campaign, $13,250,000 was raised from the outstanding generosity of over 750 individuals, businesses, and foundations, reflecting the overwhelming support of our mission to enhance the emotional well being of families with young children. Agnes Plenk Endowment Fund During the campaign, The Children’s Center never lost sight of securing our future. With more clinical space and plans to expand our therapeutic services, we knew the endowment would play a crucial role in our future success. The Agnes Plenk Endowment Fund grew by $2 million in contributions. During the economic struggles of the past year, we are pleased to report that our endowment remained fiscally secure due to the competent oversight of our Endowment Board. Agnes Plenk Endowment Board Members: John Clower; Chair, Scott Ulbrich, Sue Alder, Errol EerNisse, Michael Poulter Portrait of Agnes Plenk by Justin Taylor to accomplish something Big! -4- Expanded Outpatient Services With the addition of two group therapy rooms on the ground floor, The Children’s Center can increase our renowned ParentToddler Therapy program. This critical program helps young families who are just beginning to struggle with the challenges of parenting a toddler gain necessary skills to prevent problems from escalating out of control. These additional treatment rooms will also allow us to develop new programs for women and children living at the YWCA shelter adjacent to the Oquirrh School site. These new programs will help children begin the process of recovering from having witnessed domestic violence. A large new work room hosts our Early Childhood Consultation and Training program. Since we have moved from cramped quarters in our old building, visitors are now surprised to see that this wonderful program has grown to include six employees who consult with early childhood programs throughout Salt Lake County to ensure the provision of the highest quality of care to young children in our community. The creators of our new home Crew Members: Our “crew” of architects, general contractor team and sub contractors who helped build our home. Unfortunately, not everyone was able to attend the photo shoot. Vasilios Priskos, InterNet Properties After searching for over a year for a new location in the southern part of the valley near the new Intermountain Medical Center, our search committee became frustrated with a process which was not looking very promising. We turned to Vasilios Priskos, widely known for his keen sense of properties that are available in the downtown area. Vasilios was quick to introduce the staff and Board of Trustees to the Oquirrh School Property, and provided outstanding professional support as we worked carefully through the purchase of the perfect new home for The Children’s Center. “The moment The Children’s Center staff saw the historic schoolhouse, there was no question, this would be their future home. I am proud that I was a supporter and the person who helped them find this remarkable building that will help these young children.” Vasilios Priskos, Principal Broker and Founder of InterNet Properties Jill Jones, ajc architects The Facilities Committee interviewed a number of highly qualified architects for the renovation of the Oquirrh School Property. Jill Jones and her professional staff impressed upon us the need to develop a LEED Certified building while also keeping the historic integrity of the building intact. We were greatly impressed by their attention to creating a building that would look and feel historic while simultaneously paying careful attention to our budget limitations. In the end, ajc architects developed a building that surpassed all our expectations. “It was clear early on during the program design phase, this building was a perfect fit for The Children’s Center’s needs. We have been honored to be a part of the project by creating a home that holds true to the beautiful historical building and provides a healthy environment with sustainable design.” Jill Jones, AIA, LEED AP, Managing Principal of ajc architects to accomplish something Big! -6- Forrest McNabb, Big-D Construction Corp From our very first encounter with the construction team from Big-D, we were impressed by their passion to save another historic building in downtown Salt Lake. Having recently completed their own historic building for Big-D’s new home, they assured us that they could stick to a tight budget and bring together a team of subcontractors that could provide the best quality work at the best price. Not only did they deliver a building under budget, but Big-D donated a number of improvements to the property at their own cost to ensure that The Children’s Center would have a new home of which we could be deeply proud. “Big-D Construction Corp has been privileged to be on the team to restore a remarkable historic landmark, and work with the professionals at The Children’s Center. From the beginning, Big-D was committed to providing a well built facility and determined to bring the project in under budget. We are honored that we have accomplished all of the goals we set to help bring hope to the young lives helped by The Center.” Forrest McNabb, Senior Vice President, Big-D Construction Corp Annual Report | 2008-2009 -7- Set your Heart on something small... Expanding Clinical Services Doubling the number of clinical offices increases our ability to bring on more skilled clinical staff. This space will provide the capacity for increased mental health assessments, psychological and psychiatric assessments, infant mental health services, individual child therapy, parent-child therapy, family therapy, treatment for children in foster care, divorce adjustment support services, and statewide professional training. Our new space also allows for the development of our autism spectrum disorder services. Using the P.L.A.Y. Project®, our team of experts helps parents learn to interact with their child to develop communication skills and coping strategies. New social skills groups help children with autism spectrum disorder gain the skills needed to build friendships and interact successfully in school. Our new research lab provides space for expanded opportunities for research on emotionally disturbed preschoolers as well as documentation of measurable outcomes for our therapeutic services. Their dedication and leadership inspired the many volunteers to continue to forge new relationships and ask friends of The Children’s Center to expand their support. The Children’s Center is forever indebted to the Andersons and forever grateful. Their work together opened doors to make new friends for us both in the private and public sector. “Five years ago, The Children’s Center Board took steps to launch a capital and endowment campaign. It has been our honor to chair this campaign, as we see how this monumental decision has already begun to serve more families, change the lives of very young children and give all hope for a brighter future.” Jesselie and Scott Anderson Meghan Holbrook, Campaign Coordinating Chair Meghan Holbrook took the lead with expanding support throughout the state of Utah. She assisted in raising major gifts as well as building awareness of Children’s Center services in the public sector. “The Children’s Center provides essential services to Utah’s children and their families at times of greatest need. The Center now has a beautiful new home in a historic school where it can grow well into the future. I am immensely proud of the success of the capital campaign, and I am deeply grateful to all who contributed to its success.” Megan Holbrook Helen Cardon, Major Gifts Committee Chair and 2009-2011 Board of Trustee Chair Helen Cardon led by example. Helen dedicated herself to ensuring success. She did so by rousing the involvement and commitment of many volunteers. The Children’s Center is fortunate to have her continued leadership over the next many years. Annual Report | 2008-2009 -9- Set your Heart on something small... Leading the way to success Nancy Hogarty Baker, Community Outreach Committee Chair & 2009-2011 Board of Trustee Vice Chair Nancy Hogarty Baker brought creative thinking to fund raising throughout the campaign. She inspired campaign supporters to host receptions in their homes to introduce many new friends to The Children’s Center’s effort. Fortunately, Nancy continues to motivate others with her involvement on the Executive Board of The Children’s Center. George Hofmann, Business Committee Chair and Board of Trustee George brought an immense amount of awareness about The Children’s Center to the business community. He strategized and hosted a business breakfast, for which Senator Orrin Hatch was the keynote speaker. This breakfast raised money and created ongoing relationships. George continues to offer his leadership on our Board. Amy Damico, PR and Marketing Committee Chair and Board of Trustee Amy brought a critical communication element to the campaign. Her leadership enabled The Children’s Center to promote our outstanding services by creating materials that have changed our approach to marketing. Amy remains engaged on the Board of Trustees and continues to help on our communication efforts. Sue Alder, Foundation Committee Chair and Board of Trustee Past Chair Sue is more than a leader on the Board, she was a chair during the campaign. Foundation gifts were critical to our success. Her help in communicating our efforts to foundations showed true commitment on behalf of our Board. David Moore, Planned Giving Chair and Board of Trustee Dave developed a planned giving program for The Children’s Center. His efforts during the campaign have enabled an ongoing effort to secure gifts for our endowment, which will protect our future. Dave remains on our Board of Trustees and continues to encourage planned giving as a fundamental fund raising effort. Robert Evans, Managing Director, EHL Consulting Group Robert Evans created an effective campaign structure that included his enthusiastic leadership as The Children’s Center campaign consultant. He provided outstanding professional consultation to our able Board and committee, which led to the successful completion of our goals. “The Children’s Center has a strong strategic plan and has now completed a successful campaign that has been transformational. This will have a long standing impact on The Children’s Center as well as the greater Salt Lake community.” Robert Evans to accomplish something Big! - 10 - Leadership in Financial & Construction Oversight Scott Ulbrich, Financial Oversight and Facilities Chair Scott has served on The Children’s Center Board for over 15 years. He brings tremendous passion to his work and cares deeply for the families and children we serve. As a result, despite managing his own work and participating on several other community boards, Scott stepped up and assisted us through every step of the campaign, from the first drives to visit properties to being extremely instrumental in helping us attract, and finalize, the historic tax credits for the project. His attendance at the weekly construction meetings was crucial as he helped us make critical decisions to improve the building every step of the way. “This has been an emotional project for everyone involved in the construction. We came in under budget because of this overwhelming commitment to the project.” Scott Ulbrich Terry Wright, Jacobsen Construction To complete the team effort and ensure that we received the best building at the best price, Terry Wright of Jacobsen Construction provided critical backup and essential information to The Children’s Center’s team to help us make informed decisions about a complex renovation process. The support of Jacobsen Construction was an incredibly generous gift and significantly assisted us in completing a great building. “Jacobsen Construction has been honored to contribute to the success of this endeavor. It is thrilling to know that we all worked together to bring The Children’s Center project in under budget.” Lonnie Bullard, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Jacobsen Construction, and Children’s Center Board of Trustee Annual Report | 2008-2009 - 11 - Set your Heart on something small... Annual Report | 2008-2009 - 13 - Set your Heart on something small... Children’s Center successfully places Oquirrh School on the NATIONAL REGISTRY FOR HISTORIC PLACES Placing the Oquirrh School on the National Registry for Historic Places involved many people and took approximately three years to accomplish. It was worth the Herculean effort of all who were involved. As a direct result of the historic tax credits, The Children’s Center will receive $1.89 million that will be used toward the costs of the renovation. “As the creation of Utah’s dean of architecture, Richard K.A. Kletting, the historic Oquirrh School is one of those critical structures in Salt Lake City that expresses the power that historic preservation provides to renew places, neighborhoods, and people’s souls. Utah Heritage Foundation is pleased to be a partner with The Children’s Center in providing technical assistance with the historic rehabilitation tax credits for this outstanding project.” Kirk Huffaker, executive director of the Utah Heritage Foundation “The Children’s Center is an agency that changes lives. It has been a privilege to provide our services as a bank and also to help ensure their success in receiving funding for historic tax credits.” Damon Miller, Utah Market President of US Bank to accomplish something Big! - 14 - New Outdoor Playground Our new outdoor space includes an “exploratorium” playground. The children can be seen excitedly digging in dirt, riding tricycles, and having stick races in our new water feature. Specially built musical instruments encourage them to join together to create new sounds and music. And a climbing rock challenges them to test their climbing skills! In the front of the building the children have green space for group games and, in the spring, they will enjoy planting their children’s garden. I get emotional knowing that I can be a small part of such a special place.” Frank Youngman, artist and music teacher. After installing the instruments, Frank also joined the children in creating music on the playground. He also shared his talents with the classes. He taught the children new songs to sing as a group. Each child lit up as he involved them in the activity. The Children’s Center Logo Receives a New Look With the completion of the $13 million Campaign for a New Children’s Center: Little Kids with big Problems Need Your Help, Thomas Arts led the creation of a new look and updated logo that is being used to identity The Children’s Center. With the new mark, you will see that The Children’s Center now has a tag line: Mental Health Care for Families with Young Children. It is our effort to provide the community with a clear message to the service we provide, and who we help. “I have had the good fortune to be associated with The Children’s Center for 20 years. It was an honor to contribute to this vital process for an organization that has been critical to the families and children in our state for many decades.” Dave Thomas of Thomas Arts.
