1 A MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF CONGREGATION BETH SHALOM OF THE WOODLANDS July 2014 Tammuz -Av 5774 Sh’ma RABBI MATTHEW BERGER From the Rabbi’s desk… Traveling By Faith True story: Our patriarch Abraham wants to upgrade his computer to the newest version of Windows: 2.0. His son Isaac is incredulous. “Dad,” he says, “you can’t run Windows 2.0 on this old thing. Everyone knows that you need at least a 286 processor with 16 Megs of memory to multitask these days. Gosh, get with the program.” But Abraham, the man of faith, gazed calmly at his son and replied, “God will provide the RAM, my son.” Okay. Maybe that’s a bit of a stretch. But we all remember the story of Abraham and the divine call in the book of Genesis: “Lech l’cha mei’artzecha...Go for yourself, from your native land to a place that I will show you. There you will make of yourself a great nation. All the nations of the earth shall bless themselves by you.” For Abraham, this divine encounter marks the beginning of an incredible journey of being – a journey of self discovery that will lead to an unknown yet sacred place. It is the quintessential story about making changes and embracing transitions. Traveling by faith, Abraham was a leader who was willing to look at the journey before him as genuine opportunities for personal growth and renewal. In a similar way, each of us will begin a journey of self discovery this year. A new rabbi has come into town. A beloved rabbi has rightfully earned his emeritus status. First a bit about this new rabbi. I’m blessed to move to The Woodlands with my wife Ida, an organic chemist, and our children, Avi (6) and Meital (3). After a three day drive from Massachusetts with my faithful dog, Zippy, the rest of the family flew down to meet me in the span of a few hours. In the coming months, we look forward to meeting and embracing the entire congregation. We have been blessed with great hospitality thus far from a beautiful “waiting” home to wonderful dinners (even a dog crate) we are so very appreciative. So, too, we will surely experience changes as a congregation – some larger, some smaller. Just as every person is special and unique, every rabbi has his or her own strengths and talents. For instance, I sing and play guitar. I also have a rabbinic colleague and friend who happens to be a puppet. You’ll meet him later...I will tell you that his name is Rabbi Love. The changes we make in life are situational: we move to a new home, our company is reorganized, we resolve to improve our health or fitness level. In our people’s history, Abraham makes a decision to accept God’s call. He moved his family and entourage from the land of Haran to the land of Canaan. This change marked the beginning of his sacred journey. The transitions we make in life, on the other hand, are psychological. This is a process which takes time, effort, and patience. It is how we come to terms with the realities of change. In the course of his journey, Abraham embraced his personal and spiritual transition. More than just a “father of many” (Avram), he was now “father of the Jewish people” (Avraham). July 2014 : Schedule of Services 7-4 Shabbat Balak 7:00 p.m Kabbalat Shabbat 7-11 Shabbat Pinchas 7:30 p.m Kabbalat Shabbat 7-18 Shabbat Matot 7:00 p.m Friday Night Lights 7-25 Shabbat Massei 7:30 p.m Kabbalat Shabbat Let us look to the future and its changes with a sense of renewed energy, optimism, and hope. And let us embrace the transition of a new and exciting chapter in the life of the congregation together. B’shalom, Rabbi Matthew Berger From the President... Neil Platt Our new year has begun! With all the great progress in 5774 (2013/2014) I was beginning to wonder if 5775 (2014/2015) could possibly sustain the energy of last year. Well we already have some indications the 5775 might even be better than last year! Leadership – In June, both the new Board of Trustees and new Executive Committee joined the outgoing boards and began planning for next year. We have several new members on both committees. Thankfully, most of our committee chairs are remaining. But ALL committees can use volunteers. Below is a list of committees and chairs. If you can help – please contact the chairs. STANDING COMMITTEES • Adult and Family Education (Ed Steiner) • Art and Architecture (Barb Andes) • Communications (Jaime Stickler) • Facilities (Nathan Shapiro) • Finance (Leland Dushkin) • Fundraising (Kay Brouse) • Membership (Brian Andes) • Ritual (Janice Lovelace) • Social Action (Lisa Bourgeois) • Youth Education & Programming (Carl Wechter) AD-HOC COMMITTEES: Endowment (Phil Goldfeder) • Grant Writing (Maura Schofield) • Mitzvah (Vickie Strong) • Strategic Planning (Jerry Marcus) • Tenant relations (Nathan Shapiro / Helen) • Rabbi Transition (Leslye Feinberg) • Facilities – Information Technology (Lewis May) As most people know, Rabbi Matthew Berger will be joined us starting July 1. His first service was July 4th. Some background on Rabbi: He is native of New England and an avid Red Sox fan, he attended Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia where he earned a bachelor's degree in Psychology. In May 2003, he was ordained as a rabbi by Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, Ohio. Rabbi Berger comes to CBSW from Worcester, Massachusetts where he was the Rabbi of Temple Emanuel Sinai since 2009. While there, he oversaw the integration of two Reform synagogues (Temple Emanuel and Temple Sinai). He also served as the Associate Rabbi of Temple Chai in Long Grove, Illinois for six years, and was a student Rabbi in Mount Sinai Congregation in Texarkana, TX. Rabbi Berger is an accomplished musician and composes Jewish music with voice and guitar. He is also active in youth engagement with the National Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY). Rabbi Berger came to The Woodlands with his wife Ida, son Avi and daughter Meital. ! Information Technology. We started last year with a few old desk tops and one laptop for the teachers – but it didn’t have a functioning screen and required you to speak Portuguese to use it. As we move into next year, Helen, Rabbi and Louise have new computers. We just set up a computer for the Teachers and Madrichim to use in the old kitchen (thanks to a donation from Ricardo Zalcman). We just received a donation of four (4) new Laptops (thanks to Bridget and Isaac Mais) we will have available for the teachers starting this fall! And we are anticipating four “all in ones” computers that we will set up in the library so we can finally have a proper “resource” area. We also now have High speed internet and guest access. And we no longer are dependent on a local hard drive – we are on the cloud (not sure what this means but something like Cloud Nine?)! We have a new copier that all computers can print too and both Helen and Louise have new printers (thanks to donors Sam Schoen). Our internet is now high speed too. To manage all this we also have a brand new Sub-Committee (under Facilities) on Information Technology being headed up by Lewis May. If you have expertise in this area please contact Lewis directly. The committee along with David Cassidy (for education) have prepared a wish list of items they would like – if you would like to donate they are needing: ipads, Apple TV’s, and Flat Screen TV’s please contact Helen or David. Facilities: Last summer, we did a lot of work around our campus. David Cassidy, Nathan Shapiro and the Summer Wrecking crew have already prepared a list of things they plan to work on this summer. If you would like to join them, please contact David Cassidy directly. Grants: I think I saved the best for last. Last year, we formed a Grant committee. Maura Schofield stepped up as our Committee Chair. When we started, I honestly just hoped we would learn the process. Well under Maura’s leadership, we applied for several grants. continues on page 3 Religious School Tzedakah:A special thanks to all the students who gave so generously each week. We had raised a total of $575.37 this past year. WOW!!! Tzedakah is the Hebrew word for the acts that we call "charity" in English: giving aid, assistance and money to the poor and needy or to other worthy causes. In Judaism, giving to the poor is not viewed as a generous, magnanimous act; it is simply an act of justice and righteousness, the performance of a duty, giving the poor their due. It is a big part of Jewish life, and as Jews we must perform acts of justice, as well as love and kindness. Thank you Turpin family for collecting and counting weekly. !CBSW Handing Jewish Federation a check from our Tzedakah collections. Over $500 raised and collected Toda Rabah (Thank you) -I cannot thank enough to our dedicated Camp Shalom Madrichim and Staff for your commitment in providing quality Jewish Camp experience for our campers. I am very pleased with all of the fun enrichment that you brought to camp. Parents thank you for allowing us to educate your children and nurture in them the skills, beliefs and emotional attachments which will enable them to integrate the values of Torah, Avodah, and Gemilut Chasadim – Jewish learning, worship, and the doing of good deeds – into their lives. We are very glad to have your children in Camp Shalom and our CBSW Religious School. I am presently working to gather the best faculty for our 5775 (2014-15) school year. Unfortunately, a few of our teachers will be unable to return. We thank them and wish them the best in everything they choose to do. Have a terrific, safe month. !Helen Richard Director of Lifelong Learning and Programming From the President... ……continued from page 2 ! We did not get all of them. However, WE ARE PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THAT WE HAVE BEEN AWARDED A GRANT FROM THE JEWISH FEDERATION of GREATER HOUSTON! The Grant will be used to kick start an innovative Jewish Family Early Childhood Program, “Gan Mishpacha”. The program for 3-5 years old will begin September 2014!!!! This is the first program of its type in the area! This was one of the largest grants made by the Federation this year! The grant was made in recognition of both the growing Jewish community in the Northern Houston / Montgomery area and in the hopes and a belief that CBSW is positioned to develop a great early education program. The program is currently planned for Tuesday and Thursday mornings. The focus will be Jewish cultural and holiday programming along with a Hebrew language component. There will also be interactive sessions for family education and socialization. For parents looking for full day programs, CBSW will be partnering with, Hope Montessori. If you are interested in the program please contact Helen Richard (Director of Lifelong Learning) at [email protected]. The CBSW Grants Committee has a new email address: [email protected]. Please contact us if you have leads for new grants, ideas for future funding, or would like to get involved. ! So 5775 (2014/2015) is starting of with a bang! BUT, we need everyone to help out. Please please please consider how you can get involved and help us prove to the Federation that indeed CBSW is positioned to be not only the best of the North but the best anywhere! CBSW Teachers visit Israel On Sunday, June 15, Carl Wechter and Alan Stickler embarked on the Shirley Barish Israel Educators Seminar, a 12-day journey to Israel with 19 Houston congregational religious school teachers sponsored by the Barish Family and the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston. The Federation’s Congregational School Principals Network identified the need several years ago for stronger Israel education in our religious schools and the Shirley Barish Israel Educators Institute and trip is the first step toward creating sustainable change in our schools.! ! Our teachers received irreplaceable first-hand experience in our Jewish homeland and be able to bring their personal accounts back to their students here in Houston. In addition to visiting many of the popular sites, they looked at Israel through an educational lens with the goal of translating it back into our classrooms for our middle and high school students. ! What are you planning for this year. I will continue on the Board of Trustees and as the acting head of the Social Action Committee and Myles will continue with the choir. Do you have a favorite historical or modern figure? Myles’ favorite historical figure is FDR. Mine is Golda Meir. My husband says don’t be so obvious but, I admired Golda Meir before I converted to Judaism. 1What do you do when you are not at CBSW? I work at Lone Star College – Montgomery as the Biology Lab Coordinator and my favorite hobby is reading books. Myles is a student and Lone Star and he also enjoys guitar lessons and 60’s and 70’s music. Who worked with you on the committee or activities? Members of the Social Action Committee are Neil Platt, Rene Derewetzky, Judy Wechter, Ronna and Sara Platt There are many choir members but Myles enjoys spending time with Sol Sachs and Fred Halprin. Tell us about your work/ committee. Our Social Action committee is two years old. We are starting slowly and have had two Mitzvah Days that benefited various charities in Montgomery County. We also take a dinner to Montgomery County Youth Services shelter once a month. Our committee is small but we hope to grow which will enable us to do to benefit others who are in need. How long have you lived in the area? 20 Years When did you join CBSW? May 2009 Tell us about your self / your family. Myles and I converted to Judaism in 2009 with my husband Justin’s support. Justin and our daughter, Ashton, remain unaffiliated so we are what I call a “mixed marriage”. Justin has been very supportive in helping CBSW and has enjoyed the many Bar and Bat Mitzvah services of our close friends. What were some surprises you encountered doing the work you do for CBSW? I was surprised how very much the members at CBSW really are a family. When someone needs help, we all pitch in. I do not come from a large family and this is very important to me. What is your favorite CBSW memory? My favorite memory was finding Rabbi Brahms at CBSW. I knew him and his family as a teenager. He was instrumental in our conversion to Judaism. We like to say it was beshert. What are you most proud of about this work? I am proud that I am helping CBSW grow in many ways. Being on the Board of Trustees during the Rabbi transition is very important to me. Also, developing CBSW’s Social Action Committee has made me extremely proud. We are making a difference in the world or our small part of it. What is your favorite Jewish holiday? Our favorite Jewish holiday is Passover. Were you active in Jewish youth events (NFTY, BBYI, etc)? No What was most rewarding? I really enjoy imaging the reactions of the children we deliver the pajama bags to at the Women’s Center. We never see the reactions but, imagining when a child who is in a difficult situation receives a beautifully decorated bag, created by our religious school children, that contains a pair of pajamas, a book, and a stuffed animal really gives me a warm feeling. I would like to believe we bring some comfort to their situation. What is your favorite food / color / animal? Myles’ favorite food is Pizza. His favorite color is red, and his favorite animal is an owl. My favorite food is Lobster Mac and Cheese from Perrys (Yum, right Janice?), my favorite color is red, and my favorite animals are my cats and my schnauzer, Jean Pierre. If you were born a food what would it be? and why? Myles would like to be a pizza because most everyone likes pizza, and I would like to be pasta because to me, pasta is a comfort food. If others want to get involved who should they contact? Me! 281-362-4123 or [email protected]. Anything else you would like to mention. I really have to say that CBSW has become our home.
