May he be blessed as he goes on his way
Rabbi Henkin heads east to become Director of Rabbinical Placement
for the Central Conference of American Rabbis
Sadly, we will bid adieu to Rabbi Alan Henkin at the beginning of
June as he travels to his new home in New York City. Rabbi Henkin
will become Director of Rabbinical Placement for the CCAR, a position in which he will facilitate the placement of Reform rabbis in
URJ congregations. He will also be responsible for placement of
other rabbinic employees including Hillels on college campuses,
the military, hospital chaplaincies and other Jewish community organizations.
Currently, Rabbi Henkin is the Union for Reform Judaism’s Union
Rabbi for the newly formed West District. From 2000 to 2009 he
was the Regional Director for the URJ in the Pacific Southwest
Council. Prior to that, he served as rabbi at Beth Knesset Bamidbar in Lancaster, California, and Temple Beth Solomon of the Deaf
in Arleta, California. Ordained a rabbi in 1980 by Hebrew Union
College-Jewish Institute of Religion, he also holds a Ph.D. in Social Ethics from the University of Southern California. He has published widely in such journals as the American Rabbi, the Jewish
Spectator, the Journal of Reform Judaism, e Reconstructionist and
Reform Judaism. Rabbi Henkin was born and raised in Chicago,
and he currently lives in Northridge, California. He is the father of
four and grandfather of one.
Rabbi Henkin joined TAS in 2000, bringing his teaching, friendship and rabbinic presence to many areas of this congregation. He
is responsible for creating and leading the very successful Guitar
Minyan which he cherishes. is monthly service, which takes place
on Shabbat morning, provides a more intimate prayer setting revolving around music, spirituality and conversation. He has taught
classes, participated on committees and led a variety of services, including the alternative high holy day service which he led for three
years and which he modeled after the Guitar Minyan.
e TAS family, the URJ, members of Beth Knesset Bamidbar and
TempleBeth Solomon of the Deaf and the community will join together at Shabbat services on Friday, May 13th at 8 pm to honor
Rabbi Henkin for all of his endeavors on behalf of TAS and the Reform community. Please plan to join us for this very special evening
of prayer, music and gratitude.

finding a way to belong
Like many couples, my Jewish wife and I got married without
much discussion about religion. It was the birth of our daughter
that raised the question. My wife asked if we could raise her Jewish. I agreed with the understanding that we join a temple, because
we needed help to raise a Jew.
religion and Jewish men who considered themselves totally secular. I developed an understanding of their passion for social justice
even as some were staunch conservatives while the majority was politically liberal. I learned about how important families were to
them. I found that some were athletes and some could care less
about sports. I found that some were rich and some were poor. I
found that most were educated, but all wanted their children to
have the best education possible. Most important, I found that they
accepted me.
As we joined Temple Ahavat Shalom, we found a home for our
daughter, but I felt outside the circle. We were active with the Nursery School parents, but everything was new to me. Even the term
"Jewish Standard Time" was completely unknown to me. I really
felt the need to find a way to belong. Two things helped me down
the path to Judaism, Adult Education and the TAS Men's Club.
It wasn't long before I too was a Jew.
Adult education helped me become a Jew. e Men's Club helped
me become a Jewish man. rough the Men's Club I met other
Jewish husbands and fathers. I found Jewish men who revered their

social action update
PARTICIPATE IN “BIG SUNDAY WEEKEND” TO HELP COMBAT
HUNGER IN OUR COMMUNITY
Committee co-chair Ken Bernstein at [email protected].
Please indicate what times you will be available to volunteer.
TAS will be participating again this year in “Big Sunday Weekend,” on Saturday, May 14 and Sunday, May 15. Big Sunday
Weekend is one of the largest community service events in America. Last year, 50,000 volunteers turned out from across Southern
California to lend a hand at more than 500 different projects
across the region.
Citrus Sunday
is year, for the first time, TAS is participating as a community
partner in the 6th Annual “Citrus Sunday,” sponsored by Councilmember Greig Smith, Valley Interfaith Council and the North
Valley Neighborhood Councils.
In keeping with TAS’ involvement with Social Action Partners focused on addressing hunger and poverty in our communities, our
focus for this year’s Big Sunday event will be on two community
projects to address hunger: the “Stamp Out Hunger” event coordinated by MEND (Meet Each Need with Dignity, in Pacoima)
and “Citrus Sunday,” coordinated by Councilmember Greig
Smith’s Office. We need TAS volunteers for both projects, as described below.
Citrus Sunday is a volunteer effort to pick tens of thousands of
pounds of fresh citrus fruit to benefit needy San Fernando Valley
families served at local food banks operated by Valley Interfaith
Council. Fresh fruit is crucial for a family’s nutritional needs, but
it is expensive, so struggling families often go without it. e Valley has thousands of citrus trees, but much of the fruit rots on the
ground and goes to waste every year. You can help bring fresh fruit
to families who need it!
And for those who want to participate in a volunteer activity at the
Temple, there will be a special Big Sunday opportunity to assist
Jewish World Watch’s work to combat genocide in Africa.
e event will take place on Sunday, May 15th, from 8:30 a.m. to
1:00 p.m. Simply pick fruit from any citrus tree in your yard, and
bring the fruit to TAS – it’s that easy! If you don’t have a tree,
please share this information with someone who does.
Stamp Out Hunger
ousands of our residents rely on food banks for basic sustenance,
most of which offer essential staples such as canned goods, rice and
cereal. Based on limited space and refrigeration, food banks can
rarely provide fresh fruit or vegetables. Citrus is a fruit that is easily transported due to its rind and is found throughout the San Fernando Valley.
We hope TAS members will participate in the largest one-day food
drive in the world: "Stamp Out Hunger," on Saturday, May 14
and Sunday, May 15, during which community members may
leave donations of canned goods for pick-up by their postal carrier.
On Saturday the 14th, MEND needs volunteers from 1:00 p.m.
to 6:00 p.m to help take in up to 100,000 lbs. of food at local post
offices. en, from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m., volunteers will help sort
and organize the incoming food at MEND's food pantry, located at
the organization’s impressive headquarters building, 10641 San Fernando Road in Pacoima (less than 10 minutes from TAS). MEND
will be serving dinner on-site for the Saturday evening volunteers.
If you have any questions about Citrus Sunday, please call Councilman Greig Smith's office at (818) 756-8501 or email
[email protected].
Jewish World Watch Potholder Project
And on your way to MEND or after dropping off your citrus at
TAS on Big Sunday, please take 20-30 minutes at the Temple to
help Jewish World Watch. We will be decorating potholders to be
sent to refugees in Chad, to be used when preparing food with solar
cookers that have been provided by Jewish World Watch.
On Big Sunday, May 15th, MEND will need additional TAS volunteers to continue boxing, sorting and organizing food for the
food bank, from noon to 4 p.m. at MEND’s headquarters.
Kids/youth ages 10 and up are welcome to participate.
TAS members participated in Stamp Out Hunger last year and
joined spirited community volunteers from synagogues and
churches across the Valley in stocking up food to serve the neediest
residents in the Valley. Studies by UCLA have found that more than
130,000 San Fernando Valley residents are “food insecure.” Every
month, they must choose between putting food on the table and
paying for rent, shelter, utilities, medication and other necessities.
e Potholder Project will take place at TAS from 9:00 a.m. to
12:30 p.m. on Big Sunday, May 15th. is is a great activity for all
ages, including school-age children who can stop by after their Religious School classes on Sunday.

men’s club meanderings
e month of April was a very productive month. Our meeting of April
10th began with the usual stupendous deluxe breakfast of scrambled
eggs, lox, white fish spread, bagels, cream cheese, tomatoes, coffee, cookies, and other delectable choices, organized and prepared by Steven
Zonis. We then proceeded to nominate next year’s new officers.
President: Mike ornhill
Vice-President: Steven Zonis
Vice-President: Bob Levine
Treasurer: Barry Mann
Secretary: Mike Rayfield
IMPORTANT DATES TO RESERVE
May 2nd
e 23rd Annual TAS Golf Tournament will be held at the Woodland Hills Country Club. We are encouraging the congregation to
donate to the live and silent auctions. ese donations can consist
of professional services from accountants, attorneys, medical personnel, chiropractors, etc., as well as new items of value.
e election will be held at the meeting of May 15, 2011. Nominations are still open. Contact Joel Lowell or Ben Tenn, our nominating
committee.
We then got down to the business at hand; the folding and stuffing into
envelopes the letters and information sheet accompanying the 10th annual delivery to the congregation of the Yom HaShoah Yellow Candles
as well as individually packaging each candle.
It’s a great tax deduction as well as helping to raise funds for many
charitable projects
Please contact Jason Levi ([email protected]) or at 818-8865851 or Steven Sculler ([email protected]) (818) 416-3163 for
further details.
e lighting of the Yom HaShoah Yellow Candle on April 29th is symbolic of a deep Jewish need to remember and teach our children to confront and cope with the parts of life that cause us pain, doubt and
discomfort. It is also a way of honoring those who have no one to remember them.
May 15th: 9:00 am
At our monthly meeting officers will be elected to fill Men’s Club
positions, followed by an interesting speaker.
As the generation of Holocaust survivors diminishes, it becomes incumbent upon all committed Jews to perpetuate the memory and lessons of the Shoah. It’s our duty to impart to our children the memory
of that tragedy which consumed six million Jews plus countless others
to insure that it never happens again.
May 15th: 6:00 pm
We will be holding our final For Men Only Discussion dinner for
this year. e subject TBD. All adult temple members are welcomed to attend and participate. It’s held at the home of the club’s
members (TBD) and for a small fee you can have dinner and then
take part in an interesting and informative discussion about problems facing men. e discussion is kept confidential so everyone
may feel free to address whatever they feel is important to them.
is is what the TAS Men’s Club is all about, good company performing mitzvot, interesting speakers plus great food. Our 9:00 am monthly
Sunday meetings feature our famous bagels and lox breakfast, now with
scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, coffee, OJ, cookies, and more. May 22nd
e Men’s Club is cooking and serving lunch at the Spring Festival (rescheduled from Purim)
We urge all adult male members of TAS to join the TAS Men’s Club and
become a part of this group of easy going, congenial guys whose aim is
to perform mitzvot, have fun and commiserate and eat well. We don’t
just meet once a month during the course of the year, we also organize
barbeques, outdoor events and many activities to which spouses are encouraged to attend.
June 12th, at 9:00 am
Our last Sunday meeting for this TAS year. Next year's officers
will be installed, our usual scrumptious breakfast, and a speaker
will address the group or entertainment.

Spotlight on Sisterhood
It Ain’t Easy Being Green
Coupons for Military Families
ank you so much to Rachel Meyers for a wonderful informative
evening on easy ways (and some not so easy ways) to live green.
TAS Sisterhood has engaged on a new social action project! We
are collecting coupons and sending them to military bases overseas. Military families can use them at the PX and/or the Commissary to help defray costs and boost their tight budgets.
New Member Dessert
It's easy to help! Simply cut out the coupons that you are not going
to use and separate them into "Food" and "Non food". ey can
only accept regular manufacturer's coupons, no Internet or special
"in store" coupons. A lovely evening was put together by Co-Membership Vice Presidents Amy Corman and Diane Levine. Mel Birken provided her
home and wonderful hospitality. Sisterhood donor opportunities,
Women of Reform Judaism, board positions and responsibilities
and our commitments to the Temple were all discussed. It made for
a great introduction to Sisterhood.
If you put them into envelopes our job will be even easier. Leave
them in the Sisterhood Mailbox at TAS and we will do the rest.
We mail packets once a month. Our packages go to bases in Germany, England, Italy, Turkey, and Guam. For more information
you can go to www.grocerysavingstips.com or call Mel Birken at
366-2397.

We have sent out the Passover packages and are now winding down
the 2010-2011 school year. I will be handing over this incredible
program to Cindy Cutler on July 1st, 2011. I know she will do a
fantastic job. PLEASE, everyone with an 18-24 year old, update
Cindy, by August 30th, on where your child will be going to school
or work, where your child will be living, their cell, email, birthdate
and any other information you would like to share with our congregation. If things are still the same, you need to let her know
that too. Please, help her out.

If I have not mentioned your student in a Menorah article in the
2010-2011 school year, and you gave me their information, please
let me know. I do apologize for leaving anyone out. I do want to
hear from all the Alums who are graduating and what you are planning on doing next. Please share and maybe the TAS network will
assist you in finding a job.
Now for some more updates. Justin Gore is attending CSUN,
studying Kinesiology and Ryan Gore is attending Pierce College
with an emphasis on Music. Daniella Bienstock has been a member of TAS since she was about 3 years old and attended the ECEC
program. She is now in her 3rd year at George Washington University in Washington D.C. She attended the study abroad program last semester and studied in Uganda/Rwanda Post Conflict
Studies. She works part time at a local Temple in Maryland as a religious school teacher and has an internship with Congressman
Brad Sherman. She has also been a chaperone the last few years
with Rabbi Lutz’s social action confirmation class’ yearly event. Elliott Gurnick is studying at UC Riverside.
As always, I ask that you think about the Alumni Outreach Program when making donations or honoring loved ones. I feel this
is one of the most important programs TAS has. rough this program we keep our kids connected to their Temple and their Judaism.
As of July, 1st, 2011, all correspondence should go to Cindy Cutler. Her email address is [email protected].

social fun committee update
March 26th we had a very fun night at Temple Ahavat Shalom. We
had 54 people enjoy a delicious dinner made by Touch of Class and
then we shared lots of laughs with Sharpo, Inc. who led us in a
Murder Mystery comedy night. Eric, the head guy from Sharpo,
Inc., learned lots about the people in the audience at our cocktail
hour and used the information to help us figure out who was the
murderer.
It has come to my attention, that some people think that these Social Fun nights are fundraisers. I am only trying to break even and
so far I have lost about $100 on each night. ese nights are for us
to meet new friends and have lots of fun and laughs. We all need
fun in our lives. We are also hoping that TAS members have an opportunity to connect to new friends in our TAS community and
stay connected to the Temple.
We had two winners. Barry Mann and Mel Birken both figured out
that it was the curator.
Finally, I would really like to thank all the fun people that have participated in our social fun nights. I really appreciate it and hope you
all had a wonderful time. If you have any suggestions of what you
would like me to plan in the future, please let me know.
Our next activity will be our third annual Dodger game. I will be getting Dodger tickets for August 13th, a Saturday night game against
the Astros. We will rent a luxurious bus again and look forward to
Dodger dogs and 5th inning chocolate malts. (at’s for Scott).

when the Dodger tickets go on sale and buy your tickets early.

for our daughter, Sophie. We were so touched by the beautiful
ceremony and are so grateful to you for being able to include
all our family and friends in the service. Your passages, as well
as your song choices, felt perfect for the occasion.
