It was the birth of our daughter that raised the question. My wife asked if we could raise her Jewish. I agreed with the understanding that we join a temple, because we needed help to raise a Jew. religion and Jewish men who considered themselves totally secular. I developed an understanding of their passion for social justice even as some were staunch conservatives while the majority was politically liberal. I learned about how important families were to them. I found that some were athletes and some could care less about sports. I found that some were rich and some were poor. I found that most were educated, but all wanted their children to have the best education possible. Most important, I found that they accepted me. As we joined Temple Ahavat Shalom, we found a home for our daughter, but I felt outside the circle. We were active with the Nursery School parents, but everything was new to me. Even the term "Jewish Standard Time" was completely unknown to me. I really felt the need to find a way to belong. Two things helped me down the path to Judaism, Adult Education and the TAS Men's Club. It wasn't long before I too was a Jew. Please indicate what times you will be available to volunteer. TAS will be participating again this year in “Big Sunday Weekend,” on Saturday, May 14 and Sunday, May 15. Big Sunday Weekend is one of the largest community service events in America. Last year, 50,000 volunteers turned out from across Southern California to lend a hand at more than 500 different projects across the region. Citrus Sunday is year, for the first time, TAS is participating as a community partner in the 6th Annual “Citrus Sunday,” sponsored by Councilmember Greig Smith, Valley Interfaith Council and the North Valley Neighborhood Councils. In keeping with TAS’ involvement with Social Action Partners focused on addressing hunger and poverty in our communities, our focus for this year’s Big Sunday event will be on two community projects to address hunger: the “Stamp Out Hunger” event coordinated by MEND (Meet Each Need with Dignity, in Pacoima) and “Citrus Sunday,” coordinated by Councilmember Greig Smith’s Office. We need TAS volunteers for both projects, as described below. Citrus Sunday is a volunteer effort to pick tens of thousands of pounds of fresh citrus fruit to benefit needy San Fernando Valley families served at local food banks operated by Valley Interfaith Council. Fresh fruit is crucial for a family’s nutritional needs, but it is expensive, so struggling families often go without it. e Valley has thousands of citrus trees, but much of the fruit rots on the ground and goes to waste every year. You can help bring fresh fruit to families who need it! And for those who want to participate in a volunteer activity at the Temple, there will be a special Big Sunday opportunity to assist Jewish World Watch’s work to combat genocide in Africa. e event will take place on Sunday, May 15th, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Simply pick fruit from any citrus tree in your yard, and bring the fruit to TAS – it’s that easy! If you don’t have a tree, please share this information with someone who does. Stamp Out Hunger ousands of our residents rely on food banks for basic sustenance, most of which offer essential staples such as canned goods, rice and cereal. Based on limited space and refrigeration, food banks can rarely provide fresh fruit or vegetables. Citrus is a fruit that is easily transported due to its rind and is found throughout the San Fernando Valley. We hope TAS members will participate in the largest one-day food drive in the world: "Stamp Out Hunger," on Saturday, May 14 and Sunday, May 15, during which community members may leave donations of canned goods for pick-up by their postal carrier. On Saturday the 14th, MEND needs volunteers from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m to help take in up to 100,000 lbs. of food at local post offices. en, from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m., volunteers will help sort and organize the incoming food at MEND's food pantry, located at the organization’s impressive headquarters building, 10641 San Fernando Road in Pacoima (less than 10 minutes from TAS). MEND will be serving dinner on-site for the Saturday evening volunteers. If you have any questions about Citrus Sunday, please call Councilman Greig Smith's office at (818) 756-8501 or email [email protected]. Jewish World Watch Potholder Project And on your way to MEND or after dropping off your citrus at TAS on Big Sunday, please take 20-30 minutes at the Temple to help Jewish World Watch. We will be decorating potholders to be sent to refugees in Chad, to be used when preparing food with solar cookers that have been provided by Jewish World Watch. On Big Sunday, May 15th, MEND will need additional TAS volunteers to continue boxing, sorting and organizing food for the food bank, from noon to 4 p.m. at MEND’s headquarters. Kids/youth ages 10 and up are welcome to participate. TAS members participated in Stamp Out Hunger last year and joined spirited community volunteers from synagogues and churches across the Valley in stocking up food to serve the neediest residents in the Valley. Studies by UCLA have found that more than 130,000 San Fernando Valley residents are “food insecure.” Every month, they must choose between putting food on the table and paying for rent, shelter, utilities, medication and other necessities. e Potholder Project will take place at TAS from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Big Sunday, May 15th. is is a great activity for all ages, including school-age children who can stop by after their Religious School classes on Sunday.
