Where are you from originally/Where did you grow up?

Where are you from originally/Where
did you grow up?
I was born in Indianapolis and consider
that “home”, but I also lived in New Jersey
for 11 years as a child.
How long have you been at Purdue
University Calumet?
I came to Purdue Cal in August
2009.
Can you (briefly) explain what you
do as the Executive Director of
International Programs?
I manage internationalization efforts
for the University, including administrative
oversight of the English Language
Program, International Admissions,
International Students and Scholar,
recruitment, programming, study abroad,
and overseas partnerships and agreements.
What is your favorite part of your job?
The variety! It seems like no two days are
ever the same. I always have many
different things to do, issues to handle,
people to meet, and places to go. There is
never a dull moment, and I like it that way.
How and/or why did you get
into the field of education/
international programs?
As a college student, I majored in
Spanish and studied abroad in Spain. I was
also very involved with orientation and as a
resident assistant. So I pursued graduate
degrees in higher education administration.
This career blends my interest in learning
about the world, cultures, languages with
my affinity for working as an administrator
in a university setting.
How much of the year do you spend
traveling? Around 50 days.
What are some of the countries you have
visited in the past 2 years?
China, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Spain, India,
Jordan, France and UAE are among them.
Do you have a favorite country or city
you have visited? Just one? Not a fair
question! I have too many choices.
What is your favorite type international
cuisine?
Again, just one? As long as a meal is
followed by dessert, I am happy – no matter
what the cuisine is. I have a serious sweet
tooth!

Summer Internship in China. Right now, he works as a TA
(Teaching Assistant) for the Strength of Materials class, as well as a
lab assistant. These experiences have all paid off because he recently
was accepted for a research internship in Bejing, China. Saleh was a
welcome visitor into our ELP 033-4 class last week where he gave an
outstanding presentation.
His particular internship is a joint project between the Chinese
university and Purdue-West Lafayette faculty and students. He will do
6-7 weeks of research in China, followed by two months research
back at Purdue. Saleh went on to explain that he highly recommends
at least one internship for every undergraduate student. He told us
how to find an internship using Purdue's website (see
https://www.studyabroad.purdue.edu/programs/search.cfm), which
allows you to search for various opportunities in many countries and
in many different majors. Saleh explained his research topic—heat
transfer. He explained how heat transferred differently through
various types and size of materials.

Where are you from? Guangdong, China
Taher Al Abdullatif
What would you want people to know about
Guangdong?
Well, more than anything, the traditional food. China is
huge, and the south is really different than the north,
including in terms of food. The food in the south is a
lot spicier and people like tea, noodles, rice, and soup
which is a necessity!

I just started playing this app with my friends on Facebook, and I think you might like to play
it with your friends over the break. The app is called Draw Something – do you know it? It's
a free app. You can link to your friends on Facebook or just with your e-mail account.
How to play: Choose one of the words. Then use your fingers to draw the picture on your
phone. When you are finished, your picture will be sent to your friend. When your friend
opens it, they will try to guess the word.
It's really funny! You know how terrible my pictures are in class. My drawings are even
worse in this game. It's really a lot of fun - try it!
What is your major?
I'm planning on going into communication. I want to
do a career in journalism and / or advertising. TV is
such a part of our lives, and my undergrad major was in
Chinese lit, which I guess is a little related. I also
worked as a reporter in my hometown.

As the weather is getting warmer, we all want to spend more time outside, to enjoy
it. Some like to relax in the park with a good book, others want to play sports with
friends. In either case, Wicker Park in Highland, IN is a great place to go.
Every time I visited the park, it was full of life. It was great to see, that people were
jogging, walking, cycling, having fun, irrespective of their age or fitness level. From the
athlete to the elderly couple just trying to get some daily exercise, everyone finds their
place. There are awesome tennis courts too, and they are free for all to enjoy.
The park is also great for those, who would like to relax with a good book or have
a picnic with friends. There are benches and tables scattered around, so that readers
can enjoy some privacy and quiet, and groups can find enough space to play games
around the picnic table. There are quite a few play grounds too for those who would
like to enjoy nature with their families.
If you need a short getaway, check it out. I also recommend cycling there, because
the bike route takes you through beautiful places, it only takes 30 minutes.

Advic e Q& A
Dear Wise and Experienced Level 3 student,
1.)Sometimes when I am in class, I can't
understand what the teacher is saying. What
can I do to understand him or her better?
You should ask the teacher to repeat what he said.
Don't interrupt him during class! You can ask at
the break or after class. You could also make an
appointment with him or go to office hours. You
can also ask your ask you other friends in the class
at the break. Lastly, studying academic vocabulary
words will help you to improve your vocabulary, so
that you can understand the teacher better.
2.)I've been thinking about joining the student
council. But I don't know why I should. Can
you give me some reasons I should join?
Now that weather is getting warmer, it's time to get to outside and
enjoy it! Here are some local spots where you can spend the day.
The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is a National Park that is
located along Lake Michigan. There are Visitor Centers at the
entrance of the park where you can learn about the plants and
animals as well as the history of the area. You can enjoy a walk
through wooded areas, a picnic on the beach, or a climb up the
Dunes (really, really big hills of sand). The main entrance is in
Chesterton, Indiana- a 30 minute drive from Hammond. Check out
the website for more information: http://www.nps.gov/indu
As you all know, your teachers have been looking out
for the students who excel in attendance, attitude, class
participation, homework completion, and helpfulness.
The winners of the ELP Citizenship Award are:
Foundations - Munthatar Al Hassan, Level 1 Abdullah Alfify, Level 2 - Yunhua Liu (Leo), and Level
3 - Yaosheng Wang. Congratulations to all of them!
Special congratulations to Abdullah Alfify!
Unfortunately we haven’t been able to complete an
interview with him. However, he will be featured in
our next Newsletter.
ELP Student Council is a good opportunity to
practice English, make new friends, develop
interpersonal skills, and practice representing a
group. You will become more responsible, it also
looks good on your resume, and it is very fun!
3.)I have problems with grammar in my essays.
How can I improve my writing skills?

Kalloon is from Al-Hassa in Saudi Arabia. He studied for
one semester in college and then transferred here in January.
Kalloon said his first month here was really difficult because
it's a very new life. His brother and sister-in-law also go to
PUC. His brother had been very supportive of him and
always encourages him to “study, read, and write A LOT!”
Kalloon's study habits: Kalloon usually stays on campus
after classes finish. He studies in the library or meets with
mentors or teachers after school. He usually gets home after
7:00 p.m.
When he gets home, Kalloon eats and then he likes to watch
TV. He always watches TV in English. He has a Netflix
account so he can watch a lot of different shows on the
computer. It's a really good value for the money. He
watches the TV show, 24 – go Jack Bauer! He watches 1-2
hours every night with subtitles.
Kalloon makes friends everywhere – in the gym, the library,
and playing soccer. He likes to go out to a restaurant with
his American friends.
Advice from Kalloon: Don't sit at home: Sitting in the
house doing nothing is a big problem! Get out of the house!
Think of your future: In the future Kalloon wants to have
a family, and he wants his family to be happy. He wants his
children to go to good schools and he wants to live in a big
house. To get a happy family in the future, Kalloon says he
needs to study now and learn everything.
“Enjoy the Life! We are Young!”
I am in the middle of saving
the world, but I just heard
that you won the ELP
Citizenship Award.
Congratulations, Kalloon,
keep up the good work!
Tell us a little about yourself.
I have studied in ELP for one year. I love playing
basketball, and the Boston Celtics are my favorite
basketball team.
What are the most effective study habits that you
have developed in the ELP?
Ask mentors or teachers for help.
What is your advice for other ELP students in your
level?
Actually, I think if a person knows what he should do
and tries his best, he will do well on his work or
studies. This is what I want to talk about. As students,
we may not have to work very hard, but we must finish
the things that we should do. Also, we need to know
what our goal is.
What are your goals for the future?
Get my bachelor degree in management and do a
good job next semester.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I'm from china, and my major is Veterinarian Medicine. I've
been at PUC since last August. It is an extremely special
experience for me to study and live abroad, and I love it.
What are the most effective study habits that you have
developed in the ELP?
Make plans and notes, use Post-it notes to make a plan every
week, and record all the tasks and homework. Decline one by
one as you finish one.
What is your advice for other ELP students in your
level?
Pre-read. Read the book before the class.
What are your goals for the future?
I would like to improve my speaking ability to get a high
enough TOEFL score. After that, I'll go to regular courses
when I finish the rest of ELP.

Speaking and listening are hard, but you
can do it if you talk with people and
watch movies.
Paul's Level 1 Speaking and Listening class
made this list of the most difficult things
about learning English:
essays
parts of speech
reading
writing fast
new vocabulary
irregular verbs
modal verbs
noun clauses
Then, these experienced students created a
list of effective strategies for dealing with
these difficulties:
practicing with other people
talking with people
watching movies
listening to stories online or in the library
learning how to guess the words
reading a lot of stories
reading good articles
practicing
looking in page 336 in Grammar Express
making a plan before you write
asking teachers to explain the pattern
Finally, they prepared these pieces of
advice for English Language Learners:
Learning English is difficult because it is
difficult to memorize vocabulary, but you
can make it easier by practicing with people
or using new vocabulary in writing.
On June 8, 1869, Chicago inventor, Ives McGaffey patented a "sweeping machine" made of wood and canvas. This was the first
patent for a device that cleaned rugs, however, it was not a motorized vacuum cleaner. McGaffey called his machine the
Whirlwind and it was the first hand-pumped vacuum cleaner in the United States.
Door to Door Vacuum Service. John Thurman started a horse-drawn vacuum system with door to door service in St Louis. His
vacuuming services were priced at $4 per visit in 1903. He invented his gasoline-powered vacuum cleaner in 1899 and some
historians consider it the first motorized vacuum cleaner. Thurman's machine was patented on October 3, 1899
Listening is hard but you can make it
easier by listening to more stories
online or in the library.
Understanding new words in reading is
hard, but you can understand them if
you learn how to guess the words.
Writing fast is hard in English, but you
can make it less difficult by reading a lot
of stories.
Writing a good article is hard, but you
can do it if you try reading more good
articles.
English is difficult because of the essay.
You can make it easier by making a plan
for ideas before you write.
Parts of speech (nouns, verbs,
adjective, adverbs, prepositions, etc.)
are hard, but you can do it if you ask
teachers to give us a pattern.
Learning English is difficult because of
irregular verbs, but you can make it
easier by looking in page 336 in the
Grammar Express.
Noun clauses are hard, but you can
learn about them if you talk to your
teacher or study with a group.
The modal verbs are difficult, but you
can make it easier if you practice.
We hope this advice helps you learn
English easily.
Because level 2's latest unit was about serendipity and how it
applies to accidental inventions, I thought it might be nice to
share a few things that were invented in our nearest big city,
Chicago and surrounding areas.

On August 29, 1893, mechanical engineer Whitcomb Judson of Chicago, Illinois, was awarded a patent for a
"clasp-locker." This fastener, which consisted of a linear sequence of hook-and-eye locks, was originally used to close
high boots. It replaced the long, button-hooked shoelaces of the 1890s. Judson and his business partner, Lewis Walker, eventually received an order from
the U.S. Postal Service for 20 zippered mail bags. However, the zippers jammed up so badly that the bags were discarded. In 1913, Gideon Sundback, a
Swedish-American engineer, revised Judson's hook-and-eye device and created a smaller, lighter, and more reliable "hookless fastener" with interlocking
teeth—similar to today's zippers. In 1918, the U.S. Army became Sundback's first customer. B. F. Goodrich introduced these hookless fasteners on its boots
in 1923. The boots were called "zippers," from the "zip" sound the fastener made when closing.

The first ferris wheel was designed by George W. Ferris, a bridge-builder from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He built the Ferris Wheel for
the 1893 World's Fair, which was held in Chicago to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus's landing in America. It was
considered an engineering wonder: two 140-foot steel towers supported the wheel; they were connected by a 45-foot axle, the largest
single piece of forged steel ever made up until that time. The wheel section had a diameter of 250 feet and a circumference of 825 feet.
Two 1000-horsepower reversible engines powered the ride. Thirty-six wooden cars held up to sixty riders each. The ride cost fifty cents
and made $726,805.50 during the World's Fair.

The brownie first appeared in public during the 1893 Columbian Exposition, held in Chicago, Illinois. A chef at the city's Palmer House
Hotel created the confection after Bertha Palmer requested a for ladies attending the fair; it should be, she said, smaller than a piece of cake
and easily eaten from boxed lunches. These first brownies featured an apricot glaze and walnuts, and they are still being made at the hotel

strawberries were out of season, Dewar conceived a snack cake filled with banana cream, which he dubbed the Twinkie. During World War
II, bananas were rationed and the company was forced to switch to vanilla cream. This change proved popular, and banana-cream Twinkies were not
widely re-introduced. The original flavor was occasionally found in limited-time promotions, but the company used vanilla cream for most Twinkies.
Vanilla's dominance over banana flavoring would be challenged in 2005, following a month-long promotion of the movie King Kong. Hostess saw
its Twinkie sales rise 20 percent during the promotion, and in 2007 permanently restored the banana-cream Twinkie to its snack lineup.
