Where are you from originally/Where did you grow up? I was born in Indianapolis and consider that “home”, but I also lived in New Jersey for 11 years as a child. How long have you been at Purdue University Calumet? I came to Purdue Cal in August 2009. Can you (briefly) explain what you do as the Executive Director of International Programs? I manage internationalization efforts for the University, including administrative oversight of the English Language Program, International Admissions, International Students and Scholar, recruitment, programming, study abroad, and overseas partnerships and agreements. There is never a dull moment, and I like it that way. How and/or why did you get into the field of education/ international programs? As a college student, I majored in Spanish and studied abroad in Spain. I was also very involved with orientation and as a resident assistant. I have a serious sweet tooth! 2 Saleh Alkarri, who graduated from the ELP Fall, 2010, is now a seasoned mechanical engineering undergraduate. Luxian Li Summer Internship in China. Right now, he works as a TA (Teaching Assistant) for the Strength of Materials class, as well as a lab assistant. These experiences have all paid off because he recently was accepted for a research internship in Bejing, China. Saleh was a welcome visitor into our ELP 033-4 class last week where he gave an outstanding presentation. His particular internship is a joint project between the Chinese university and Purdue-West Lafayette faculty and students. He will do 6-7 weeks of research in China, followed by two months research back at Purdue. Saleh went on to explain that he highly recommends at least one internship for every undergraduate student. He told us how to find an internship using Purdue's website (see https://www.studyabroad.purdue.edu/programs/search.cfm), which allows you to search for various opportunities in many countries and in many different majors. Saleh explained his research topic—heat transfer. He explained how heat transferred differently through various types and size of materials. ! Fatimah Al Duhaish Sami Alghamdi I just started playing this app with my friends on Facebook, and I think you might like to play it with your friends over the break. The app is called Draw Something – do you know it? It's a free app. You can link to your friends on Facebook or just with your e-mail account. How to play: Choose one of the words. Then use your fingers to draw the picture on your phone. When you are finished, your picture will be sent to your friend. When your friend opens it, they will try to guess the word. It's really funny! You know how terrible my pictures are in class. My drawings are even worse in this game. It's really a lot of fun - try it! What is your major? I'm planning on going into communication. I want to do a career in journalism and / or advertising. Hopefully, in the next year or two we will have a homestay program. As the weather is getting warmer, we all want to spend more time outside, to enjoy it. Some like to relax in the park with a good book, others want to play sports with friends. In either case, Wicker Park in Highland, IN is a great place to go. Every time I visited the park, it was full of life. It was great to see, that people were jogging, walking, cycling, having fun, irrespective of their age or fitness level. From the athlete to the elderly couple just trying to get some daily exercise, everyone finds their place. There are awesome tennis courts too, and they are free for all to enjoy. The park is also great for those, who would like to relax with a good book or have a picnic with friends. There are benches and tables scattered around, so that readers can enjoy some privacy and quiet, and groups can find enough space to play games around the picnic table. There are quite a few play grounds too for those who would like to enjoy nature with their families. If you need a short getaway, check it out. I also recommend cycling there, because the bike route takes you through beautiful places, it only takes 30 minutes. What is your advice for other ELP students in your level? Pre-read. Read the book before the class. What are your goals for the future? I would like to improve my speaking ability to get a high enough TOEFL score. After that, I'll go to regular courses when I finish the rest of ELP. 7 6 Culture Corner Speaking and listening are hard, but you can do it if you talk with people and watch movies. Paul's Level 1 Speaking and Listening class made this list of the most difficult things about learning English: essays parts of speech reading writing fast new vocabulary irregular verbs modal verbs noun clauses Then, these experienced students created a list of effective strategies for dealing with these difficulties: practicing with other people talking with people watching movies listening to stories online or in the library learning how to guess the words reading a lot of stories reading good articles practicing looking in page 336 in Grammar Express making a plan before you write asking teachers to explain the pattern Finally, they prepared these pieces of advice for English Language Learners: Learning English is difficult because it is difficult to memorize vocabulary, but you can make it easier by practicing with people or using new vocabulary in writing. On June 8, 1869, Chicago inventor, Ives McGaffey patented a "sweeping machine" made of wood and canvas. This was the first patent for a device that cleaned rugs, however, it was not a motorized vacuum cleaner. McGaffey called his machine the Whirlwind and it was the first hand-pumped vacuum cleaner in the United States. Door to Door Vacuum Service. John Thurman started a horse-drawn vacuum system with door to door service in St Louis. His vacuuming services were priced at $4 per visit in 1903. He invented his gasoline-powered vacuum cleaner in 1899 and some historians consider it the first motorized vacuum cleaner. Thurman's machine was patented on October 3, 1899 Listening is hard but you can make it easier by listening to more stories online or in the library. Understanding new words in reading is hard, but you can understand them if you learn how to guess the words. Writing fast is hard in English, but you can make it less difficult by reading a lot of stories. Writing a good article is hard, but you can do it if you try reading more good articles. English is difficult because of the essay. You can make it easier by making a plan for ideas before you write. Parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjective, adverbs, prepositions, etc.) are hard, but you can do it if you ask teachers to give us a pattern. Learning English is difficult because of irregular verbs, but you can make it easier by looking in page 336 in the Grammar Express. Noun clauses are hard, but you can learn about them if you talk to your teacher or study with a group. The modal verbs are difficult, but you can make it easier if you practice. We hope this advice helps you learn English easily. Because level 2's latest unit was about serendipity and how it applies to accidental inventions, I thought it might be nice to share a few things that were invented in our nearest big city, Chicago and surrounding areas. e Th Flashcards, flashcards, flashcards: The reason why your teachers always talk to you about flashcards is because they used flashcards when they were in college. (Using flashcards helped them succeed, and it can help you succeed, too!) Try setting them up around you on the floor instead of holding a stack of them in your hand. Draw patterns and symmetrical shapes on the carpet with your fingers before studying and before taking any exam. This movement helps stimulate your brain. T he Zi p per [ 18 93 Finally, spend time really studying. There is not a tip in the world that will work unless you actually spend the hours studying. Your grade will be a direct reflection on how much you study. 69 ] In 1874, William Blackstone of Indiana built a birthday present for his wife. It was a machine which removed and washed away dirt from clothes. The first washing machines designed for convenient use in the home. Mighty Thor. The Thor was the first electric-powered washing machine. Introduced in 1908 by the Hurley Machine Company of Chicago, Illinois, the Thor washing machine was invented Alva J. Fisher. The Thor was a drum type washng machine with a galvanized tub and an electric motor. A patent was issued on August 9th 1910. El ect ri cW as hi n g M ac hi n e [1 91 0] On August 29, 1893, mechanical engineer Whitcomb Judson of Chicago, Illinois, was awarded a patent for a "clasp-locker." This fastener, which consisted of a linear sequence of hook-and-eye locks, was originally used to close high boots. It replaced the long, button-hooked shoelaces of the 1890s. Judson and his business partner, Lewis Walker, eventually received an order from the U.S. Postal Service for 20 zippered mail bags. However, the zippers jammed up so badly that the bags were discarded. In 1913, Gideon Sundback, a Swedish-American engineer, revised Judson's hook-and-eye device and created a smaller, lighter, and more reliable "hookless fastener" with interlocking teeth—similar to today's zippers. In 1918, the U.S. Army became Sundback's first customer. B. F. Goodrich introduced these hookless fasteners on its boots in 1923. The boots were called "zippers," from the "zip" sound the fastener made when closing. ] The first ferris wheel was designed by George W. Ferris, a bridge-builder from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He built the Ferris Wheel for the 1893 World's Fair, which was held in Chicago to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus's landing in America. It was considered an engineering wonder: two 140-foot steel towers supported the wheel; they were connected by a 45-foot axle, the largest single piece of forged steel ever made up until that time. The wheel section had a diameter of 250 feet and a circumference of 825 feet. Two 1000-horsepower reversible engines powered the ride. Thirty-six wooden cars held up to sixty riders each. The ride cost fifty cents and made $726,805.50 during the World's Fair. Stretch for ten minutes before studying or taking exams. Eat a huge breakfast that includes protein before taking any morning exam. Avoid sugary foods like doughnuts and soda. A chef at the city's Palmer House Hotel created the confection after Bertha Palmer requested a for ladies attending the fair; it should be, she said, smaller than a piece of cake and easily eaten from boxed lunches. These first brownies featured an apricot glaze and walnuts, and they are still being made at the hotel according to the original recipe. 1 nie [ B row 893 ] Twinkies were invented in Schiller Park, Illinois (Suburb of Chicago) in 1930 by James Alexander Dewar, a baker for the Continental Baking Company. Realizing that several machines used to make cream-filled strawberry shortcake sat idle when strawberries were out of season, Dewar conceived a snack cake filled with banana cream, which he dubbed the Twinkie. During World War II, bananas were rationed and the company was forced to switch to vanilla cream. This change proved popular, and banana-cream Twinkies were not widely re-introduced. The original flavor was occasionally found in limited-time promotions, but the company used vanilla cream for most Twinkies. Vanilla's dominance over banana flavoring would be challenged in 2005, following a month-long promotion of the movie King Kong. Hostess saw its Twinkie sales rise 20 percent during the promotion, and in 2007 permanently restored the banana-cream Twinkie to its snack lineup.
