“Teaching is not
entertainment but is
unlikely to be successful
if it is not entertaining.”
Herbert Simon, Nobel Laureate
It matters.
Beakerhead looks and feels like one of the most engaging and
delightful ways you could spend five glorious days in September.
Look a little deeper and you’ll see that Beakerhead is a year-round initiative that couldn’t be
more important to our future – as individuals, as companies, and as a culture.
For decades, we have been streaming people into either technical or creative occupations, and yet it is precisely
at their intersection where ingenuity lives.
What happens when art does not
meet science?
Bright kids suffer at desks. Students, especially girls,
get alienated from math and science, because it does
not feel socially relevant. The full potential of future
leaders is trimmed. Both teachers and students feel
bound to silos of teaching and learning. And it follows
us into the workplace, where the reward system has a
hard time recognizing and supporting truly innovative
problem-solving.
It doesn’t have to be that way.
“My time at Beakerhead was amazing
I got to try a lot of new things and it
was one of the best experiences of my
entire life!” Ignition Crew member (age 12)
“Beakerhead was a bit like walking
around a theatre of my own obsessions.
The greatest thing was the serendipity.
You couldn’t turn round without bumping
into someone, or something that was
surprising, invigorating and challenging
– in all the right ways.”
We can change this by creating a motivation for
scientists and engineers to work shoulder-to-shoulder
with artists and designers. You can see a climate of
creativity start to warm up.
“Every employee in every occupation can benefit
from becoming more creative, and if we all do it
together, Canada can become the most innovative
economy on the planet,” says economist Todd
Hirsch in The Boiling Frog Dilemma.
So how do we fuel this culture of ingenuity that is so
crucial to our future?
Enter Beakerhead.
Beakerhead is a registered Canadian charity whose
mandate is advancing education at the crossroads
of art, science and engineering. Calgary – as an
engineering and action-oriented hub – is the perfect
home base for this catalyst.
Science and engineering just got

the future.
ENGINEERED ENTERTAINMENT
To build whole people and prosperous communities we need to bring our rational and
creative strengths together. This is the power of STEAM (science, technology, engineering,
art and math).
Beakerhead brings engineers and artists together, as students, families and communities. And while at this
spectacular crossroads, students get inspired, adults get ideas and everyone gets creative!
Roll up your sleeves! This is where the mental meets the manual. Beakerhead warmly invites everyone to learn by doing.
What is Beakerhead?
“Ideas originate
in the muscles.”
Thomas Edison
A sandbox for human ingenuity
Beakerhead is hands-on and citywide. It takes place
indoors and out, includes ticketed and free events
and involves venues and public spaces throughout
Calgary, Alberta.
In the start up years, we raised $1.8 million each year
to mount a major spectacle. “Where did this come
from?” people asked.
It’s a made-in-Calgary original.
We’re in it for the long term. Beakerhead is a platform
for creativity at the crossroads of “things technical”
with “things artistic.”
This platform for creativity takes shape through four
areas of programming.

Beaker’s
Dozen
Not for the faint of heart
This is a fund for visionaries who understand that individuals can change the game
through support in the early years. We all know that major success stories often start in
someone’s garage.
Beakerhead tells a contemporary science and
engineering story in a popular way.
Like the Calgary Stampede ... Beakerhead is a Calgary
original. Now it needs its own “big four.” Except we
need a dozen or more (blame inflation)!
The 2013 inaugural event involved more than 70
program partners, 62,000 in-person encounters, 5,000
students and 2.1 million social media impressions.
We knocked it out of the park! 2014 saw growth ramp
up – all events sold out, 73,000 people took part,
and social media mentions rocketed to
5.3 million.
The next years are critical. In order to achieve the level
of spectacle that will attract people internationally,
the initiative needs core funding upon which to build
a solid foundation. The Beaker’s Dozen funding will
be used to shape larger-scale, multi-year projects and
original engineered experiences that grab attention
(and participation) globally – all in the heart of Calgary.
This is a five-year campaign to raise capital.
Beakerhead is in start-up mode. To reach lift off, we
need the support of visionaries, who understand
the value of early investors. Beakerhead is seeking
the support of visionary Calgarians to support this
campaign.
Approximately $3 million in core funding over
five years is required to gain a cruising altitude
that is sustainable.
Now we’re talking impact!
The Beaker’s Dozen will be recognized as patrons who
helped build the foundation for Beakerhead in its first
five years. The Beaker’s Dozen will be:
honoured at major VIP and public events
i ncluded in the media materials and
invited to media events in the first
five years
i nvolved in Beakerhead events,
depending on the preferences of
individual patrons
We are seeking visionaries to invest $50,000 a
year in these early years. Who knows -- maybe
we’ll have a Beaker’s Dozen Space Station to name in
50 years!

Inspiring
the young
and curious.
All children should have the chance to explore the powerful combination of their creative
and technical talents as they shape their future paths. Beakerhead is a catalyst for that
reaction by working with the formal educational system to provide curriculum-linked
experiences that are simultaneously mental and manual.
In 2013, 4,620 students and 28 schools
were engaged.
The next year, the numbers quadrupled:
20,500 students and 168 schools took part.
Allow everyone to experiment,
tinker and create!
Goals to increase the impact of Beakerhead are to:
·
Integrate year-round classroom-based
ingenuity challenges
·
Develop in-class resources such
as videos
·
Partner with at-risk youth organizations
to deliver out-of-school programs
·

FIELD TRIPS: Every year, Beakerhead creates one major
destination installation for field trips, where students
can physically explore an entertaining engineered
environment. Whether a three-storey rocketship, a
biofuelled carnival, a little village of human ingenuity,
each flagship educational installation is a major
Beakerhead feature. Support for this program
element will reach many thousands over the full five
days of Beakerhead.
Investment opportunities range from $25,000 - $75,000

SCHOOL VISITS: By sponsoring a school visit, you can
empower the cross-pollination of ideas and enthusiasm.
Each Beakerhead school visit is an entertaining,
educational presentation by an inspiring Beakerhead
presenter who would not otherwise be available to the
school. A dozen or more school visits take place each
year. You will be recognized verbally and on signage,
and may attend the visit to offer welcoming remarks.
$5,000 per school visit

MENTORSHIP VIDEOS: Beakerhead brings amazing inventors,
artists and engineers together each year to inspire
and educate. As a presenting sponsor of a video,
you can help bring the personal stories of these
inventors to life for use in classrooms, with each video
accompanied by a hands-on challenge to students. A
multi-year commitment is recommended to capture the
development period.

FIELD PROGRAM: Beakerhead has a critical need for a mobile
outreach program in order to reach a broader range
of youth whose exposure to Beakerhead could be
transformational. The mobile outreach program
will travel to cities, towns and field locations! The
curriculum-linked education plan is developed, and we
have an outreach vehicle ready to hit the road. We need
your support to fund (and name!) the implementation.

INGENUITY CHALLENGE: In 2013 and 2014, a massive roll of
aluminum foil was sent to schools with a back-to-school
challenge – change your world by thinking differently
on a shoestring. Students makers of all ages use this
challenge to start the school year off with a focus on
creativity and collaboration. In the first year, there
were eight schools taking part. In year two, it jumped
to 39. With your support, it can reach many more! We
are seeking sponsorship to expand throughout the
western provinces.

AT-RISK YOUTH PROGRAM: Beakerhead’s inclusive mix of art,
science and engineering opens up a world in which
many thrive – especially those youth who do not feel
they fit. The Ignition Crew program is designed to
mentor youth whose VIP access to the world and
people of Beakerhead can build confidence and a sense
of belonging – and help turn them into the leaders of
tomorrow. They take part in more than six Beakerhead
events, with pre-event workshops, event-related
volunteer roles and backstage access.

CREDIT COURSE: Ambitious students and teachers come
together for an intensive multidisciplinary course to
collaboratively build a project that they then proudly
show off during Beakerhead. Beakerhead coordinates
the mentors who guide and inspire the students, and
provides a public platform for making visible the work
of the students during the five days of Beakerhead.

INTERNATIONAL ENGINEERING COMPETITION: Building upon the success of
regional and national student engineering competitions
in Canada, this competition marks a new era of global
challenges. It is produced in partnership with existing
engineering student organizations throughout the
world. During the two-day competition, teams are
presented with a technical challenge, and have only 24
hours to design and create a solution. All of this takes
place in an aquarium format, meaning we can all watch
ideas materialize into ingenious solutions. Sponsorship
of this major biennial event is a naming opportunity.
$250,000 per year
This is a biennial competition
KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE: Support the cross-pollination of ideas
among artists and engineers through a matchmaking
service, which helps artists find engineers who can help
them with their projects, and engineers find creative types
to spark applied ideas. This essential service is easier to
describe than do, but the payoff is massive. It facilitates
the creation of new ideas, new groups of entrepreneurs
and truly disruptive technologies and processes.

Big bang!
ARTIST-AND-ENGINEER RESIDENCY PROGRAM: The Beakerhead artist/
engineer residency program will support the creation
of major new creative works that will premiere
internationally in Calgary during Beakerhead each
year. During a residency period, between May and
September each year, selected artist and engineer
teams will develop new works in residence with
partner organizations in Banff and Calgary. Arising
from a professional production environment, the
artworks produced during the residency will contribute
to an unprecedented spectacle of performance and
public engagement. The artist/engineer teams in
residence will also give presentations to students as
part of their agreement.

Wiz kid apprentices unite!
APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM: Beakerhead will take on emerging
geniuses ready to hone their inventor skills in a unique
engineering entertainment environment. Apprentices
will be working in teams of four to develop new
projects, prototype ideas, and test them on audiences
in the weeks leading up to Beakerhead. The whole
process will be documented and shared on video –
showing the creative process, the multiple iterations,
incredible successes, and massive failures. Must be
18 or older, team-oriented, risk-taking, and comfortable
with talking, technology and building things.
$75,000
Naming rights available with multi-year commitment
PROJECT fund
PROJECT FUND: Every year, young people come to Beakerhead
with ideas and no funding to start them. They’re
not asking for a lot – $1,500 to purchase a chassis for
an art car or $5,000 for materials to build interactive
park benches. Often these projects are supported by
summer employers (a college, university or community
organization), but the materials costs are a barrier. Help to
kickstart some of the best learning a student can find – a
hands-on experience that develops skills. All funding will
be awarded to students based on the merit of proposals.

In its first year, Beakerhead became one of Calgary’s largest collaborations. By its second
year, over 100 organizations came together – producing events and programs that drew
students, artists, engineers, scientists and tourists into venues and public spaces across the
city. Beakerhead is an opportunity for community building year-round, with culmination in
a high profile, highly concentrated expression of social and cultural creativity.
In 2013, four teams built catapults and 252
people volunteered.
By 2014, there were 12 teams in the competition
and the volunteer database grew to 600.

COMMUNITY PRESENTATIONS: Beakerhead held its first community
workshop in spring 2013, inviting individuals and
families to build green machines (aka art bikes) out of
scrap materials. The results? People learning design
process and technical skills and building custom
creations to take to the streets. Beakerhead will
travel to communities around the province to give
presentations and seed workshops that inspire local
creations. The created contraptions can be unveiled in
their own communities and subsequently brought to

BUILD DAYS: Beakerhead’s core role and talent is to bring
different types of people into a judgement-free zone
where they may learn to intersect and collaborate.
These are the entrepreneurs and community builders of
the future! In a series of winter build days, Beakerhead
brings in mentors to help people create works of art
