Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church Fifth Sunday After Epiphany February 8, 2015 8:00 & 10:30 a.m. ZION EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH A Sandusky Area Lutherans in Mission Congregation 503 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, OH 44870 (419) 625-2112 [email protected] John Mawhirter, Pastor Fifth Sunday After Epiphany Carolyn Steinfeldt, AiM, Director of Faith Formation February 8, 2015 - 8:00 &10:30 a.m. Worship Welcome and Announcements Prelude (please stand) “Kingsfold” Robert Powell Gathering CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Pastor: In the name of God the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. Pastor: God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all. People: If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true. Pastor: But if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. People: Jesus Christ is the Light of the world, the light no darkness can overcome. (Silence for reflection and self-examination) Pastor: Most merciful God, People: troubled and penitent we confess our sins to you. Our deeds are evil; we have loved darkness rather than the light. We languish in the shadow of death. Let your mercy dawn upon us for the sake of Jesus Christ your Son, that our hope may rest in him alone, and not in any power or wisdom of our own. Within our hearts, and in our lives let there be light! Pastor: God, who once commanded light to shine out of the darkness, has shone in our hearts to give the light of knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ, who was handed over to death for our trespasses and was raised for our justification. For his sake your sins are forgiven. By the power of the Holy Spirit, walk as children of light. People: Amen. Hymn #733 “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” 2 Pastor: Sisters and brothers in Christ, beloved children of God; grace, mercy, and peace be with you all. People: And also with you. 3 4 Prayer of the Day Pastor: Let us pray. Our eyes have seen, O God-People: a woman, leaping from bed, now feverishly bustles about the kitchen. The lame jump for joy. The paralyzed are dancing. Pastor: Our ears have heard-People: as with the deaf we hearken to the shouts of the mute. Those who were diseased are crying for joy. The demon-possessed are singing your Spirit’s song. Pastor: Filled with such images… People: …such sounds… Pastor: fit us for service. Then we will join Christ on his mission: People: “Let us go to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also!” Pastor: Through the same Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. He lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now… People: and forever. Amen. (please be seated) Word FIRST READING: Isaiah 40:21–31 21 Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? 22It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to live in; 23who brings princes to naught, and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing. 24Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth, when he blows upon them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them off like stubble. 25To whom then will you compare me, or who is my equal? says the Holy One. 26Lift up your eyes on high and see: Who created these? He who brings out their host and numbers them, calling them all by name; because he is great in strength, mighty in power, not one is missing. 27Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, "My way is hidden from the LORD, and my right is disregarded by my God"? 28Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. 29He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. 30Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted;31but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. 5 (8:00) Psalm 147:1–11, 20c 1 Hallelujah! How good it is to sing praises | to our God! How pleasant it is to honor | God with praise! 2 The LORD re- | builds Jerusalem, and gathers the ex- | iles of Israel. R 3 The LORD heals the | brokenhearted and binds | up their wounds. 4 The LORD counts the number | of the stars and calls them all | by their names. R 5 Great is our LORD and might- | y in power; there is no limit | to God's wisdom. 6 The LORD lifts | up the lowly, but casts the wicked | to the ground. R 7 Sing to the LORD | with thanksgiving; make music upon the harp | to our God, 8 who covers the heav- | ens with clouds and prepares rain for the earth, making grass to grow up- | on the mountains. R 9 God provides food | for the cattle and for the young ravens | when they cry. 10 God is not impressed by the might | of a horse, and has no pleasure in the speed | of a runner, 11 but finds pleasure in those who | fear the LORD, in those who await God's steadfast love.20c | Hallelujah! R SECOND READING: 1 Corinthians 9:16–23 16 If I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, and woe to me if I do not proclaim the gospel! 17For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward; but if not of my own will, I am entrusted with a commission. 18What then is my reward? Just this: that in my proclamation I may make the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my rights in the gospel. 19 For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I might win more of them. 20To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To 6 those under the law I became as one under the law (though I myself am not under the law) so that I might win those under the law. 21To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (though I am not free from God's law but am under Christ's law) so that I might win those outside the law. 22To the weak I became weak, so that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that I might by all means save some. 23I do it all for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings. Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. (please stand for the Gospel) Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to the 1st chapter of Mark People: Glory to you, O Lord. GOSPEL Mark 1:29–39 29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30Now Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. 31He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them. 32 That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. 33And the whole city was gathered around the door. 34And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. 35 In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. 36And Simon and his companions hunted for him. 37When they found him, they said to him, "Everyone is searching for you." 38He answered, "Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do." 39And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons. Postlude “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” Alice Jordan (10:30 continued) NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. In Isaiah it is the one God who sits above the earth and numbers the stars—it is that God who strengthens the powerless. So in Jesus’ healing work we see the hand of the creator God, lifting up the sick woman to health and service (diakonia). Like Simon’s mother –in-law, we are lifted up to health and diakonia. Following Jesus, we strengthen the powerless; like Jesus, we seek to renew our own strength in quiet times of prayer. If you are new to our community and would like to share a message with the pastor, please make use of the worship cards in the back of the seats.
