T he restrooms and pavilion at Peninsula Pool have been completed.
The restrooms at the Softball Ball field will be completed by the beginning of February.
Meetings were held with Marion county authorities and we continue to work toward utilizing reclaimed water for common areas.
Replacement of numerous street and stop signs will have been completed.
Cleaning and treatment of the Horizon roof has been schedule for the February 9th to the 11th.
Road resurfacing
All Community roads will be micro-surfaced, on a worst first basis, over the next five years. The first 1/5th of the roads will be done this year. The
roads scheduled for this year are listed below. The listed neighborhood roads will be crack sealed/patched as necessary beginning on February
2nd, and will take approximately 4 days to complete. Roads will be open during this period.
Micro-surfacing will begin on March 2. Roads that are being micro-surfaced must be cleared of any vehicles and will be closed to traffic from 7am
until 6pm on the day the micro-surfacing occurs. There will be no mail delivery, garbage pickups or deliveries permitted during the closure.
Emergency vehicles will be permitted where necessary. Residents are asked to park their vehicles the night before along adjacent roads, or at the
Horizon Center during this period. Residents should turn off their sprinklers the night before the repaving, should it rain, paving will be temporarily
suspended. All affected residents will be notified by door hanging signs, as well as a notice in the newspaper box, the day before the road is to
be repaved. After the paving is completed, for the next few weeks keep your vehicle moving as you turn the steering wheel or it will create unsightly
damage to the road in front of your house. We will make every attempt to respond to any questions or problems as soon as possible, please register
any questions with the receptionist for a prompt response.
Roads being Micro-surfaced in March
Eagle Ridge, Hampton Hills, Sawgrass, Starr Pass, Echo Glen, Reston, Spyglass Hill, Turnberry
The tentative date for each Neighborhood will be sent to all residents via the resident e-mail system, listed on channel 12, listed on our website
and posted in the Horizon center once the schedule is finalized.
Have a great day today and an even better tomorrow!
Bob Carter, President – SCG&CC HOA
This is an annual reminder of some things you can do to extend the useful life of items in your home. Spring is just around the
corner, the official first day of spring is March 20th. Most people equate Spring to “Spring Cleaning” but this is also the time to
do preventative maintenance on your home both inside and out. It should be a time to do preventative maintenance on your
appliances and to do a check of the outside structures and foundation of your home. It is also a time to check things that could
become safety issues. I have put together a list of just a few things you should do before the summer heat comes.
ave a professional company come out and perform preventative maintenance on your HVAC. They should check the Freon
•H
level; clean the coils, lube, and oil the fans and motors.
• Clean your clothes dryer vent; this should be done every year as to not cause a possible fire hazard. You can do it yourself
and to find out some easy directions there are a number of websites that will show you how, just Google “cleaning dryer vents”.
• On the outside of your home slowly walk around looking at all of the siding, roof shingles, foundation, sidewalks, and any other concrete you
may have like on your Lanai. With the changes of weather and temperatures especially this past year, you will have expansion and contraction.
This may cause cracks in your foundation, concrete, driveways, roof shingles, etc. Keep notes so you can fix anything that you are able to, or so
you can show a contractor what you have found.
• If you are going to clean out your garage, pull everything out and make stacks. Things to keep, things to throw out, to donate, recycle, and
chemical disposal like old paint cans, etc.
• Check all of your window and patio screens for tears or holes. If you find any damage, repair the screen or replace it. You can purchase kits to
do this on your own. Also, check your door and window weather stripping and door sweeps to ensure they still have a good seal that will help
in energy savings.
• If you have not used your gas grill in a while due to the colder weather then give it a good cleaning. Clean the grates and drip pan, carefully
brush off the burners in case any holes are plugged and give it a good spray down with the hose and wipe it clean.
• Check your vehicle and equipment. Check if it is time for an oil change, to rotate your tires and have all the fluids checked on your cars and
some of the same things with golf carts (check the batteries). If you have lawn equipment is it time to change the oil and clean the spark plugs.
You may think of some things that need to be done or checked that you can just add to the list. When you are done with these then go inside, clean
the windows, organize the closets, then sit back and enjoy the summer.

is nothing more than a sense of purpose.”

Entertainment Committee
The MAJOR Holidays have passed. The BCS has a
new college football champion. The SUPER BOWL has
been completed. The 2015 Ads from the Super Bowl
were televised (don’t ya’ just luv Doritos?). And, here in
beautiful SPRUCE CREEK GOLF AND COUNTRY
CLUB, one Show presented, three to go.
The next Show is on Friday, February 20 at 7:00 pm.
The NY Vagabonds will be entertaining us. Believe me,
you do not have to be a New Yorker or a vagabond to
enjoy this group. They perform a repertoire that spans
the 1920’s to the present day. They will take you on an
exhilarating whirlwind tour of great music; from well
known standards to Broadway show tunes, jazz, doowop, barbershop and everything in between. You will
tap your feet, clap your hands, and sing along to your
favorite songs. We promise you that it will be one of the
top four shows of our season. Take it to the bank!
The Entertainment Committee has finished the interview
process to select new members. We thank all fifteen
applicants for both their interest and patience. The
Committee’s goal is to continue to bring our neighbors
the BEST entertainment BANG for YOUR buck. One last
thought, don’t forget Valentine’s Day, February 14.

Christmas and Hanukkah are over and hopefully you
had wonderful visits with family and friends, good food
and a safe holiday. It is now time to get back to the
everyday living in our great community and as we go
about our everyday life, we need to remember that we
want to keep our community as one of the best in the
area.
One thing that makes our community so great is that the
people in Del Webb take pride in their homes and the
community property.
Remember, when we are out walking, going to the
Fitness center, Horizon center, the pools, etc. that we
should have pride in these areas and take care of them.
All of us need to do our part to respect these areas, all
the chairs, tables, equipment, etc.
Believe it or not, most covenant violations are for
cleanliness of homes, maintenance of mailboxes and
light poles, lawn care and putting out yard waste and
trash containers too early.
Our homes need to be as nice as the community
properties. A reminder that the roofs and exteriors of
our homes should be kept clean at all times. Have you
inspected yours lately?
The Mailboxes and posts are to be cleaned or painted
as necessary and kept rust free. House numbers should
be visible and not faded and the lighting operable.
Information on where to obtain the number tiles is
available in the Community Standards office.
The lawns and landscape beds need to be kept free of
weeds and the lawns and shrubs
maintained.
Remember we live in a wonderful
community and have a Happy
2015.
Note: It was mentioned in the
last article to pressure wash your
roof. Pressure washing is not
recommended for roofs.

Around Town
Make Someone Happy
What is the REAL story and whom can we trust to give
us the straight skinny on the legendary custom of
Valentine’s Day. Owing to the many saints/martyrs
with the name, and even one woman – Valentina –
you can celebrate Valentine’s Day several times a
year.
However, in spite of various players and even
contradictory information, preference is truly in the
eye of the beholder. My favorite is:
The original Valentine lived in Rome in the third century
during the reign of Emperor Claudius. In order to
build an army, Claudius drafted single men. However
Valentine, a priest, secretly married many couples in
hopes of sparing the men from going to war. When
Claudius learned of this he sentenced Valentine to
death. A daughter of the prison guard came to visit
him while he awaited his fate. They would sit and talk
for hours and she kept his spirits up to the last. On the
final day, he left his friend a note thanking her for her
friendship and loyalty, and signed it, “Love from your
Valentine”. That was February 14, 269 A.D. People
have held this date dear, in addition to or in spite of,
various other explanations.
Legends abound, among them, is that the medieval
English poet Chaucer may have invented Valentine’s
Day. No romantic celebrations took place prior to the
publication of a poem
Chaucer wrote around
1375. The poem
entitled “Parliament of
Foules” links a variation
of courtly love with the
celebration of St. Valentine’s
feast day after the poem
received widespread attention.
AnotherValentine’s Day poem can be found in the
collection of English nursery rhymes Gammer Gurton’s
Garland (1784):
The rose is red, the violet’s blue,
The honey’s sweet, and so are you.
Thou art my love and I am thine;
I drew thee to my Valentine:
The lot was cast and then I drew,
And Fortune said it shou’d be you.
And don’t forget the ever present messages on candy
hearts, much in demand at this time of the year, but
where did this all start?
No matter what you choose as your favorite
explanation of the St. Valentine custom, just make
someone happy. YOU deserve the same.

Thank you
to our Residents
We would like to extend our gratitude to all of the
residents who have referred and encouraged
contractors, retailers and service providers to place
an ad in The Fountain Newsletter. Your referral
benefits the community in a couple of ways. First of
all, the advertising covers the cost of printing the
newsletter and having the flyers collated for insertion,
which means that your monthly amenity dollars can
be utilized in other important areas. Secondly, it
encourages companies who are known to provide a
good service or product to advertise. A number of
residents, especially those who are new to the
community, look to The Fountain ads for services and
products they need or desire.
If you know of a service provider or a company that
has a good product you think the residents would
benefit from, please let them know about our newsletter
and encourage them to place an ad if they would like
more business from our community. Information may
be obtained in the Activities office or by calling Linda
Dalgewicz at 352-307-0696 x227 or by E-mail at
[email protected].

Training For Dementia and
Alzheimer’s Caregivers Can Be Helpful
While Angels on Request volunteers have been
providing much needed respite care and transportation
assistance to our residents, when Dementia and
Alzheimer’s cases progress to a more demanding
level with our loved ones, other ways to deal with
care giving may need to be considered.
One of our program coordinators recently attended a
special seminar that addressed this situation and
wants to share some information she believes could
be helpful to caregivers.
A local organization, ELDER OPTIONS, offers a
FREE, six-week course that helps educate and train
family caregivers who assist persons with Alzheimer’s
and/or dementia. Participants will learn how to:
• Increase care giving skills and knowledge
• Gain confidence to set and alter care giving goals
• Understand the progression of dementia
• Improve caregiver’s self-care skills
• Increase opportunities for family involvement
An upcoming six-week session is scheduled for the
following Thursdays:
June 4, 11, 18, 25, and July 2 and 9, 2015. The
time is from 1:00 – 3:00 pm at Hope Lutheran
Church, 250 Avenida LosAngelos, in The Villages. To

COMMUNITY WATCH NEWS
“Selecting a Credible
Contractor”
Do your homework before you have any work done
on your home. This article describes what can happen
if we hire unlicensed contractors. Since many of us
have made or thinking about making changes to our
homes, we believe this article will provide steps to
ensure that we can feel comfortable in selecting a
credible contractor.
It sounds like a great deal. You’re offered a low price
on a muchneeded home improvement and promised
the work will “get started right away, and done before
you know it”. So, you write a check for half the quoted
price because the contractor has to buy materials.
The man looks like a hardworking craftsman and you
believe his story.
What you may soon find out is that you have just
become a victim of an unlicensed contractor. You
may never see him or your money again. Even if you
do, you are likely to get inferior materials, questionable
construction practices and shoddy workmanship for
your hard earned money.
Once more, you are now at risk of being sued for
medical expenses and lifetime support by that
unlicensed contractor or one of his workers, should
one get hurt on your property. You might think your
homeowners’ insurance would cover this, but usually
when you hire someone unlicensed to work on your
property, your insurance company holds you
responsible.
Steps to selecting a Credible Contractor:
… Ask around. Word of mouth reference is one of
february 2015
the best ways to find a good contractor.
… Get good phone numbers. Never accept only a
cell number as a point of contact. Verify the phone
number and physical address.
… Interview several contractors. Talk to at least three
contractors and get their bids.
… Verify the License and Insurance. Ask for a copy of
their contractor’s license or Marion County
Competency Card, along with a copy of their
insurance certificate.
… Ask a lot of questions. Write down the answers.
… Document your experience along the way. Keep a
basic log of phone calls and when the contractor
was working on your property.
… Go on line. Visit the Marion County Building Dept
website
(www.marioncountyfl.org/building/htm)
and the Florida’s Dept of Business and professional
Regulation website (www.myfloridalicense.com)
before hiring the contractor or call the Licensing
Division at 4382429 to verify the contractor’s license,
valid insurance and worker’s compensation certificates
are on file.
Hopefully, the above information will be helpful in
your quest for selecting a contractor.

This month, we continue a multi-faceted
review of Paul’s letter from prison to the
Philippians. In his encouraging message,
Paul points to the Creator of all as the
supreme example of humility, thankfulness,
joyfulness, tenderness, compassion, selfless
ness, kindness, patience and contentment.
Though one of Paul’s shortest letters and one
of the smallest books in the Bible; we’re

His topic: “The Middle East, Race, and the
Academy: Dilemma in American Higher
Education”. Anti-Israel fever seems to be
sweeping American campuses. Brandeis
University, founded in 1948 by American
Jews wishing to promote higher education
for all, has been highly respected for its
academic excellence. Yet professors there
are actively fanning the flames of antiSemitism as they teach “untruths” about the

We certainly hope and pray for another
hurricane free season in 2015. However,
just as sure as tomorrow’s sun rise, if we let
our guard down we will get caught
unprepared. So CERT must continue to be
diligent, and prepare for the certainty of
hurricanes hitting Florida (maybe even us).
In order to do this CERT maintains two fully
stocked “Emergency Trailers”, along with
several lockers in the Community Center,
and a storage unit in the Shuffle Board Court
Building.
Of course, it doesn’t do any good to have all
the above mentioned equipment if we don’t
have trained people, and an organized
procedure to deliver the services. That’s why
it is so important to attend our hurricane
disaster drills.
It’s the only way to become familiar with our
procedure of organizing & dispatching CERT
teams.
CERT invites all new homeowners to join us
in maintaining our preparedness. Call me at

2015 schedule of training classes.

The Open House brought many folks who
just love to sing to the Ballroom. The new
approach to our programs, new rehearsal
times and other pertinent information was
presented by our new director, Noreen
Floden. Jeannine Hart showed her expertise
on the piano and Marianne Hughes played
her guitar. The songs were fun and so were
the refreshments.
If you couldn’t make this open house, come
and join us at our workshops on January 18,
February 1st, February 15, March 1st and
March 15th. We’ll sing from 6:30 to 8:30

September. I know you’ll enjoy our new
program!

First, we would like to thank and congratulate
our new and returning officers. And let us not
forget our Communications Coordinator,
Harry Crier, who has been inspirational in
keeping us organized and informed.
In April, our club will display carvings in the
display case located in the Horizon lobby. In
May, we will have a display in the Belleview
library. Many of the works on display are
beyond belief. At our meetings, there are
always many skilled carvers who are willing
to help those of us who are still in the learning
stages. As always, we invite anyone with
interest to come join us on Tuesdays between

“Succulents in Found Objects”
Renee Donley, Owner of Exterior Spaces &
Gilded Matilda’s
If you save old stuff, some might call you a
hoarder. But eventually lots of that stuff comes
in handy – like utilizing it to plant easy-tocare-for succulents. Now don’t you feel good
about turning some of that ‘trash’ into
‘treasure’? And if you don’t have any stuff,
Renee can help with that. Come and get
some tips at our meeting.
“Backyard Beauties” will be held on April
25, 2015. Call Genny Fulmer @ 245-1118
to have your back yard on tour.
February Garden Tips:
1.
Annuals: you can start adding warmseason annuals such as marigolds,
verbena, and salvia to your flowerbeds.
2.Have your soil’s ph tested, for free, at the
Marion County Extension Office; call
671-8400 for information.
3.Now is the time to replant or add new
bulbs to your beds. Separate bulbs at
this time. New bulbs are amaryllis,
crinums, rain lilies, calla lilies and
gloriosa lily.
4.Aphids, mites, and thrips become active
now; spray with soap spray or a synthetic
insecticide.
5.
Fertilize citrus towards the end of the
month.

Welcome to everyone interested in swimming

improving your health with lap swimming.
New members are welcome.
Currently our times are at the Peninsula pool

Tea-Quila Rose
Club
Tea Lovers after all the drinking and eating of
sugary, sweet, fat filled foods, you may
begin to feel a little sluggish; well did you
know there are teas that are good for the
body, mind and spirit that will cleanse your
system… these are called detox teas (organic
rooibos teas).
For any centuries, tea has been known to
associate itself with good health. Now more
than ever there is scientific research that
supports that connection.
If you are interested in learning more about
teas, meeting new friends and experiencing
the delight of going to a Tea Room….come
meet everyone on February 16th at 9 am in
the Game Room at the Horizon Clubhouse.

Once thought to be a novelty, genetic
genealogy is now a full-blown industry and
legitimate research tool. In the recent
December 2014 Family Tree Magazine, an
article explains the growing pains and
growth of the business of DNA.
Leagues are going strong with play ongoing
every day except Sunday. Hope everyone is
having a good time.
