Coping With Flu? Here are 9 Tips to Ease Symptoms by WEB MD
While there's no cure for flu, there are some natural and practical flu
remedies you can use to ease flu.
Tip #1: Stay home and get plenty of rest.
Tip #2: Drink plenty of fluids.
Tip #3: Treat aches and fever so you feel comfortable.
Tip #4: Use cough suppressants and expectorants to treat the cough.
Tip #5: Use steam inhalations.
Tip #6: Sit in a steamy bathroom.
Tip #7: Run the humidifier.
Tip #8: Try soothing lozenges.
Tip #9: Try saline (salt water) nasal drops.
Attendance Policy:
Student absences due to illness or family emergencies 1-4 days require
notification by parents/guardians. Parents are requested to call the office by 8
a.m. the day of absence. In addition, a written note must be sent with the
student upon return to school. Teachers will check notes from parents/guardians
and send them to the office for filing. FIVE or more days of absence due to
illness require a doctor's note upon return to school. School office phone number

Student Work Request Due To Illness:
Homework requests are not circulated on the first day of a student's absence as
a majority of students return to school after one day. Students who are out for
only day may request make-up work directly from teachers (excuse note from
parent required.)
Parents may call to request homework for their child on the second day that a
child is absent. Homework will be available for pick-up in the main office by 4:30
p.m. of that day.

1. "My Valentine" Box Tops Homeroom and Individual
Contest continues Monday, February 2
Collection dates: Feb. 2, 4, 6, 9, 11, 13 (last day)
2. Sensei Aki Summers Japanese Class Field Trip to the
MACC
Thirty-one students in Sensei Aki's Japanese class will be attending "The Samurai
Warrior" on the Noh Stage at the MACC this Tuesday, February 3rd.
Munemori Takeda and Fumiyuki Takeda descend from the famous Takeda clan of
the Kanze School, which dates back to the 1300s and includes a distinguished
lineage of Noh masters and National Living Treasures. The cousins, who began
their Noh training as toddlers, have become two of Japan’s most popular young
Noh performers today. The Takedas are passionate about sharing the beauty,
poetry, and universal themes contained in this classical Japanese art form, and have
given numerous performances and workshops around the world to new and
young audiences.
Q: What is Noh?
A: Noh is a Japanese musical made by Kanami and his son Zeami about 650 years
ago. It's main characteristics is that it's performed wearing masks.
The same performance is offered to the general public on Wednesday, February
4th at 7:30 p.m. in the McCoy Studio Theatre at MACC. Admission tickets can be
purchased for $28 each at the ticket office or visit the MACC online.
3. 56th ANNUAL MAUI DISTRICT SCHOOLS’
SCIENCE & ENGINEERING FAIR
The 56th Annual Maui District Schools Science & Engineering Fair will be held at the
Velma McWayne Santos Community Center, 395 Waena Place, Wailuku on February
4-5, 2015. This years' Science Fair Coordinator is Mr. Mark Cunningham assisted by Mr.
George Helfenstine, both 7th Grade Teachers. Good luck to all 24 students whose
science projects were entered into the fair for judging, recognition and awards.

3. 6th Annual Water Conservation Poster Contest. Deadline is March 23.
Entries must be turned in on the dates to Mrs. Ishikawa so it can be mailed out
in time. For more information, come to F-101. You may also check online for
these contests. Cash prizes will be given away, your winning entries will be
displayed or printed in calendars, & if you are in Mrs. Ishikawa's art class, you
will receive extra credit points. 5. 6th Grade Controlled Experiment Science Projects in Quarter 3

Additionally, each student will be assigned a performance date to present their
project to the class. Be sure to check your child's planner next week write their performance dates
on your calendar.
Helpful Tips:
Provide enough time at home for your child to practice their experiment and
collect data.
Be sure to have enough supplies on hand to repeat the project at least 5 times.
The night before the performance date:
Be sure all materials and equipment needed for the project are packed in the
student's backpack or another back
LABEL all items with your child's first & last name and science block #
Make sure your child gets enough sleep :)
Encourage your child to do their best!

Miss Medley recently received a $1000 science grant from Monsanto. She plans to purchase

>4th Annual Maui 5K Run at Ma'alaea Triangle
Mark your calendars for Sunday March 29th, 2015 at 7:00 a.m. and come join us to raise funds
for the Iao School P.E. Department. There will be a ChampionChip/MyLaps timed 5K race and
a fun, untimed 1 Mile Run/Walk for Keiki and adults. The Maui 5K seeks to promote health
and fitness from Hawaii's children by giving the schools the ability to increase participation in
youth sports by providing additional funds to maintain or purchase new equipment for their
physical fitness programs. Proceeds from the event will be distributed back to the
participating schools.
