Great Job Etta! What to Know About the Flu Jessica Vogel, CTRS The flu season is in full swing and we want to make sure that you are taking all the precautions possible to prevent from getting the flu. The CDC recommends getting the flu vaccine as soon as possible after the vaccine comes out. If you have not received the vaccine yet, it is not too late. Some other precautions that you can take to prevent getting the flu or spreading the flu if you have it are washing your hands many times a day, staying away from people who are sick and staying home if you are experiencing flu symptoms. According to the CDC, if an older adult gets the flu, it is best treated with antiviral drugs. It is believed that the flu spreads mainly by droplets made when people talk, sneeze, or cough. Most adults can infect others starting 1 day before symptoms arise and 5-7 days after becoming sick. Signs & symptoms of the Flu include: * Fever * Cough * Sore throat * Runny/Stuffy Nose * Muscle/Body Aches * Headaches * Fatigue * Vomiting and Diarrhea So Let us make sure we stay healthy during this flu season and take precautions to prevent spread of the flu. If you have any questions about the Flu please ask your nurse. The History of Groundhog Day On Groundhog Day in 1887 a rodent meteorologist is celebrated for the first time at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. According to tradition, if a groundhog comes out of its hole on this day and sees its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather; no shadow means an early spring. Groundhog Day has its roots in the ancient Christian tradition of Candlemas Day, when clergy would bless and distribute candles needed for winter. The candles represented how long and cold the winter would be. Germans expanded on this concept by selecting an animal, the hedgehog-, as a means of predicting weather. Once they came to America, German settlers in Pennsylvania continued 3 the tradition, although they switched from hedgehogs to groundhogs, which were plentiful in Pennsylvania. In February, male groundhogs emerge from their burrows to look for a mate (not to predict the weather) before going underground again. They come out of hibernation for good in March. We started off this year great! We got to go bowling at the end of the month and also got to have a fabulous BBQ lunch at Mojos BBQ. We also got to hear Russell Keyser, who came down from New York and played a show for us. He was wonderful. February is going to be great. We have a few excellent things planned. We are going to be going to the Public Library on Feb. 7, which I am very excited about. We are also going shopping at Walmart on the 13th and going out to the Pig BBQ on the 27th. We have a few entertainers coming in February. First, we have Doyle coming to play some old school rock and roll on February 2. Then we have George, who came with Dan and played our Christmas party, coming and playing for our Valentine’s Day party on the 14th. Lastly, we have Dan coming on the 20th and playing for our monthly birthday party. I am very excited about all of the upcoming activities. We will be having a vote for our Valentine’s Day King and Queen, so please place your vote with Jessica or one of the activity aides. Introducing our New Admissions Director Erin Campbell My name is Erin, I had been working in Federal insurance for the past 7 years. I was born and raised in Jacksonville, so I am very familiar with that Jacksonville has to offer. I have a 2 year old little girl, who takes up most of my time and a husband, who is like having another child. I absolutely love to travel. I am excited that I am able to go to Hong Kong with summer to spend time with family. Although not far to get to, my favorite place to go is Disney World, especially the Magic Kingdom. In the future, it is my goal to travel to all 50 states and see all the cool sites each has to offer. I am very excited to be working at Woodland Grove and meeting all of you. If you ever have any questions, my office door is always open. Thank you so much for letting me be a part of the team. 7 Go Red for Heart Month By Tori Couch Greystone is committed to healthy, worthy and impactful causes.
