Officer Reports Field Marshall, Dave McDonley, reported that work on the Club Flying Site has ended and that he is working on the two mowing tractors to get them into top shape. Treasurer, Steve Schroer, reported the Club Treasury balance, including results from the Club events that took place in October. These included the Fireman's Cheer Fund Benefit Fly-In, the Club 40 Racing meet and the Club Annual Swap Meet. A number of factors resulted in a decrease in the funds raised for the Cheer Fund. The Swap Meet yielded a good financial result. The Club 40 Race Meet had a very good turn-out. Events Director, Gary Waters, asked Members to consider directing or overseeing 2015 events. The Club Calendar will be finished in time for the February Club Meeting. Ken Erickson recently took on the role of Club Training Organizer, a non-officer position. Ken reported that outdoor training is, for the most part, finished for 2014. Big Club 40 Racing Announcement! RCPRO Club 40 Committee Chairman, Ken Erickson is officially announcing, “There will be Club 40 racing at the Nats in Muncie!” Ken also stated the following. While there are lots of details still to be worked out, Club 40 racing will happen on Friday, July 10th. The Contest Director will be Robert “oldbob” Petrinec of Austin, TX. Our equipment has been offered and I have explained how we use it. Lisa Koehler has indicated that she is willing to run the computer. Several of our more skillful pilots are making preparations to go and race. This will be Club 40, using the ball-bearing engines. We will be needing some of you to volunteer to work the event. When we know more, it will be reported. On Saturday, AMA 424 racing will be held. That is the class called “Sport Quickie”. It is flown on a three-pole course using ball-bearing .40 engines and “Quickie” airframes. You might want to watch. MEETING PRESENTATION Steve Smith, Safety Officer, gave a presentation on Battery Safety, with particular emphasis on charging and transporting Lithium Polymer battery packs. He also spoke of the safe handling of packs which have suspected crash damage. Hopefully we’ll get to see this engine running in 2015! Thanks for bringing it in for show and tell Tom. It was a real treat! The winner was picked by our young club member Alex Sweeney. Remember, you must be registered and present to win. Wear your club shirt or nametag and get a dollar off! Congratulations! We have a new VP! Show & Tell Tom Hartman brought his 1961 K&B “Fury Twin” engine. It looks like it’s around a 60 size glow engine. Hard to tell being that it has two inline cylinders. What a great engine for a project with a narrow cowling. Tom had mentioned he had purchased it at a swap meet. He thought it just looked neat! Everybody at the meeting, including Mike Marthaler, agreed! Congratulations go out to Ken Miller, our newest member, for winning the BCRCF club meeting attendance raffle!!! Alex Sweeney Meet our new VP, Jeff Rauch. I think I have always been interested in flying both real and RC planes. After college, I got a pilot’s license and flew for a few years before it got too expensive. About 3 years ago, I stopped by a Big Bird fly-in, and shortly after took a few lessons with Ken Erickson and joined BCRCF. Since then, I have been almost exclusively doing indoor flying. I have several small electrics and a larger (1400mm WS) Cessna 180, that has wheels too small for grass. So, I have not done much flying at our field. Hopefully, I can get something put together this winter for next summer. I have also enjoyed supporting in several club flyin’s. Jennie and I moved to Columbus in 1996 for work (at Cummins). Our oldest daughter Christy was in college and our youngest Kelly was a junior at East. Christy is now married, a science teacher in Tacoma, WA and mother of our two grandchildren, Joanna and Charlie. Kelly, is an administrative assistant at IU in Bloomington and working on starting a business. I am looking forward to getting more active in the club activities this coming year. rewarding to have so many people come and thank the club for all that we do. I might add that our check presentation was followed by Mayor Christian Brown presenting the check to the Cheer Fund for her Mayor’s (motorcycle) Ride fundraiser. Our check was bigger! Well, physically anyway. While her amount was considerably larger, she mentioned that their efforts fell short of previous years as well. There were a number of factors that worked against us this year. Regardless, we (as a club) should be proud of our efforts, and be inspired to come up with ways to make next year’s event the best ever. A More Secure Way To Mount Your Servos By Mike Bealmear Hobby King EPO Parkjet II The $1000.00 check was presented by Mike Bealmear and Jeff Rauch to Jay Smith of the Cheer Fund. This was a nice turn out for their Chili Cook-Off, and (of course) the chili was good! As challenging as this year’s event seemed to be (for me anyway), it is For the heck of it, I plan to move the motor from the back to the front and see if I have any better luck. I would appreciate any advice from anyone who has done something similar to this before. The wingspan is 23 inches and the length is 19 inches. One thing I know that I have to do is mark the center of gravity as it is now and then be sure it is the same after the conversion. Another thing is, I'll have to cut off the nose right in front of the canopy and somehow mount a piece of thin, but strong wood for the motor to mount onto. Any help and advice that our club members could give John would be greatly appreciated. The attached picture is of my EPO Parkjet II from Hobby King. I have been unable to fly it without crashing. I even let Mike Marthaler have a go at it. He couldn't fly it either. After that, I hung it up in my garage and it hasn't been touched for approximately 1 1/2 years. When mounting servos in wood airplanes, remove the wood screws, and add a drop of thin CA glue to harden the threads in the wood, making them last longer and holding the screws and servos more securely. Often, you will find holes that have become plugged up with CA glue, causing you to re-drill the hole. So, before the glue hardens, go back and make sure all screw holes are clear by passing a T-pin or needle through. That way you won't have to re-drill them! Keeping electronic components cool Clear canopies can expose the radio compartment to direct sunlight which results in additional heat in the model's interior. This causes no problems during flight, but makes shading your model on the ground very important. Cover the canopy with a white towel; or better yet, park your airplanes in the shade. This will help keep the electronic components cool. $110 Hanger 9 Alpha 40 Airplane, Thunder Tiger 46 pro and Servos $50 Slow Poke Applying Monokote trim over Monokote When using a trim sealing iron to apply some trim over your MonoKote, be sure to not use too high of a heat setting. Doing so could cause bubbles between the two layers and ruin the finished look. Typically when using a trim sealing iron, you would want to stay between mid to low 100's Fahrenheit. $75 Great Planes Super Sportster 40 MkII ARF .40-.46, 55.5" $25 Charger Please contact Gary Waters if you are interested in the above items.
