February 8, 2015 - 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where
he prayed…He told them, ‘Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may
preach there also. For this purpose have I come.’” – Mark 1:35, 38
In today’s Gospel reading we see a perfect example of stewardship.
Jesus gives His time to do all that God wishes - healing the sick and
preaching. Yet, Jesus also makes time to be alone in prayer. It is
through prayer, spending time with God, that we find the strength to
do what God wishes us to do. Be sure to find time every day to be
with God.

“The Serenity Bereavement Session was so healing for me.
I believe it is necessary to know that you are not the only one
going through grief. Different people deal with grief differently,
but joining the Bereavement Session was very important for

new 5 week session. We offer comfort, support and a listening

International Day of Prayer and Awareness against
Human Trafficking
Thanks to all who have been praying daily with the named
intention on the calendar in the efforts to eradicate human
trafficking. The prayer calendar runs through Sunday, February
8, 2015.
That date has been designated as the annual
International Day of Prayer and Awareness against Human
Trafficking. February 8 is the feast day of St. Josephine Bakhita,
who was kidnapped as a child and sold into slavery in Sudan and
Italy. Once Josephine was freed, she became a Canossian nun
and dedicated her life to sharing her testament of deliverance
from slavery and comforting the poor and suffering. She was
declared a Saint in 2000 and is the patron of human trafficking
victims and survivors. Please continue to pray that this heinous
crime can be eradicated.

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Dear People of God,
Initial registration for 2015-2016 is running three times
higher than it was at this time last registration period. St. John’s
School builds on a solid philosophy of education. It reverences
the uniqueness of each child. It partners with parents to raise up
young people, solid in character and dedicated to articulating the
difference faith makes. Now is the time to visit and, perhaps,
register for the 2015-2016 school year. In a world that is often
confused and driven by conflicting opinions, St. John’s School
offers a refreshing and needed alternative.
We appreciate all those who have already returned their
Stewardship of Service commitments.
Your commitment
reverences and serves people of the parish and far beyond. If
you haven’t already, please let us know how you will be able to
serve during this upcoming year.
Another place that reverence is shown is when people remain
during the entire Mass. Last weekend at one of the Masses, I
distributed Communion to those in the back who were unable to
walk to the front because of illness or age. I was horrified by the
people, not ill or aged, who walked out of church chewing the
host. Some lingered to chat in the narthex while the rest of the
congregation cherished the Eucharist and offered prayers of
thanks.
Plato remarked 2,500 years ago that the loss of reverence
was a symptom of the decline of civilization. Reverence
acknowledges that there is something inherently good, of
value, and, indeed, holy in what we reverence. The ultimate of
holiness is what we do each Sunday at Mass.
Our school and faith formation programs are built on
reverence for each other. Families that thrive are families that
reverence the unique gifts of each member and, patiently, pay
attention to each other.
People who carry out service
commitments freely acknowledge that people’s experience and
spot in life may be very difference from ours. However, we
reverence the person and work together.

Additional Notes: Our prayers go with young people and their
families who are preparing to receive Jesus in Holy Communion
for the first time. It has been so rewarding to work with these 87
families of our parish.
Congratulations to scouts who received awards today. Thanks
to all of our scout leaders and families for their dedication to
scouting.
Fifty-nine Confirmation candidates were on retreat this
Sunday. Their parents and other family members will have
joined them for Mass this Sunday afternoon.
When your letter for the Bishop’s Appeal arrives, please
respond generously. If you have never made a gift, your firsttime gift may well be the one that helps us meet our goal this
year. I will be away from the parish February 9-16th for vacation.
I will be having some hernia surgery on March 9th. Please check
the Lenten schedule for Tuesday’s Sacrament of Reconciliation
in addition to that on Saturday.

shade grown?
Every grower is committed to sustainable
farming practices. There are no pesticides
or herbicides applied. Native forests are
kept intact with coffee trees growing
beneath their canopy, thus minimizing
erosion and providing habitat for wildlife. Caring for our
environment is a part of our Catholic beliefs. The United
States Conference of Catholic Bishops website states, “Care
for the earth is not just an Earth Day slogan, it is a
requirement of our faith”. Why not make this the month you
try our fair trade coffee or tea. Orders need to be placed
by 6pm Sunday February 8th, the green beans are then
roasted on Monday and Tuesday, packaged on Wednesday,
shipped on Thursday and available for pickup after all of the
masses on February 14th and 15th. You can’t get any fresher
coffee unless you roast the beans yourself.

we grow? St. Francis Xavier Parish is offering a full day
prayer retreat with Dr. Carol Masuga to help us deepen our
relationship with Jesus Christ.” Bishop Ricken has given
permission to Dr. Masuga to offer prayer retreats in our
diocese and has called her "an excellent teacher of prayer and
meditation in the Catholic tradition...she can explain deep
material in a very ordinary way that helps people grow in
their prayer life and in following the way of Jesus." The
retreat begins at 10:00 and culminates with Holy Mass at
4:00. A hot lunch will also be served. Preregistration at the
parish office is preferred but same day registration is
accepted.

From that moment on, the Spirit empowers us with unique
gifts to serve our families, church, and communities. As
you discern your ministry here at St. John’s this year,
remember, In whatever way you are feeling called to
serve, it is Jesus calling you to serve Him.
As John 12:26 says:
"Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I
am, there also will my servant be. The Father will
honor whoever serves me.”

Stewardship Tree will offer you the opportunity to share your
blessings in a specific way. Suggestions on the tree are ways
for each of us to show an ‘act of stewardship’ in our families,
community and to each other. Make this a family project this
winter! If we each do something small, together we can make a
difference. Please take a tag off the tree and when your "act of
stewardship" is complete just return it and put it back on the
tree for someone else to take.
