from the Pastor
February 2015
Dear Parishioners,
In anticipation of encouraging as wide as possible participation in the Consultation process for the 2015 Synod of Bishops, I am inviting interested parishioners along with the Parish
Pastoral Council to attend an information meeting.
Thursday, February 26, 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Conference Room 2 (former chapel), Parish Office
At the meeting I will explain the purpose and structure of the
Synod, the steps leading up to it and explain the documents
associated with the consultation process as well as give
insights that may be helpful in filling out the questionnaire. I
will also answer any questions that may arise about the entire
process.
I highly encourage all parishioners to consider participating in
the consultation process. While attending the meeting is not
necessary to participate, you may find it helpful.
I look forward to your participation. Please call the Parish
Office, 267/247-5374 x-223, by Friday, February 20 if you
plan on attending so proper arrangements may be made.
Thanks again for all you do.
Sincerely in Our Lord

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time—2/8/15
Job 7, 1-4. 6-7
I am filled with sorrows all day long.
Psalm 147, 1-2. 3-4. 5-6
Praise the Lord who heals the broken-hearted.
1 Corinthians 9, 16-19, 22-23
Punishment will come to me if I do not preach the gospel.
Mark 1, 29-39
Job’s cry of hopelessness stands in marked contrast
to the hope of those who put their trust in Jesus, who
“heals the broken hearted and binds up their wounds”.
Such are the blessings of the good news.
Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time—2/15/15
Leviticus 13, 1-2. 44-46, Psalm 32, 1-2. 5. 11

Reflection
Pondering the Word…
In his book, The Wounded Healer, Fr. Henri Nouwen shares a
story from the Talmud:
Rabbi Yoshua ben Levi came upon Elijah the
prophet…He asked Elijah, “When will the Messiah
come?” Elijah replied, “Go and ask him yourself.”
“Where is he?” asks the rabbi. “Sitting at the gates of
the city,” says Elijah. “How shall I know him?” “He
is sitting among the poor, covered with wounds. The
others unbind all their wounds at the same time and
then bind them up again. But he unbinds one at a
time and binds it up again, saying to himself,
’perhaps I shall be needed: if so I must always be
ready so as not to delay for a moment.”
(1979, pp.81-82)
The image of the Messiah as a wounded healer, always at the
ready, is a great comfort. When we are wounded, we often
long for the presence of someone who understands what we’re
going through; someone who, in addition to having lived what
we are living, is healed enough of their own pain to be there
and just listen. Such a person is often hard to find, so it’s good
to remember, “We do not have a high priest who is unable to
sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has similarly
been tested in every way, yet without sin. So let us confidently
approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find
grace for timely help.” (Heb 4: 16)
Living the Word…
The subtitle of The Wounded Healer is: “In our own
woundedness, we can become a source of life for others.”
In my experience, the surest way to heal my pain and the
self-focus it brings is to reach out to others. There’s an
important caveat though. If I‘m not paying attention or healed
enough of my own pain, I can talk too much about my own
woundedness as a way to show empathy. While it can help to
share some of our situation, the most healing thing we can do-for the other and for ourselves--is just be present and listen.
The image of the Messiah binding one wound at a time is
significant. When you encounter someone who needs a friend,
say a quick prayer that God will bind any wound you are
nursing so that you can be totally present to the other. Ask the
Holy Spirit to guide your ears to listen fully and your lips to
speak a few meaningful words of comfort and support.

Feast of Our
Lady of
Lourdes
In 1854, Pope Pius IX
confirmed what the
Catholic Church has
always understood: Our
Lady was immaculately
conceived, meaning that
she was free from sin
from the moment of her
conception.
Three years later during one of the apparitions to St.
Bernadette Soubirous at Lourdes in 1857, Our Lady
personally confirmed this truth and identified herself as the
Immaculate Conception to Bernadette, who as a child with
limited education, didn’t know anything about this concept,
but shared the information with her parish priest.
As the Church approaches the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes,
it’s a good time to briefly learn more about how the Bible
supports our understanding of the Immaculate Conception.
Consider reviewing the summary information for this topic at

World Meeting of Families
Preaching Series at OLG
February 2015
Two become one
We are not made to be alone. Human beings need and
complete each other. Friendship and community satisfy that
longing with bonds of common interest and love. Marriage is
a uniquely intimate form of friendship that calls a man and a
woman to love each other in the manner of God’s covenant.
Marriage is a Sacrament. Married love is fruitful and offered
without reservation. This love is in the image of Jesus’
faithfulness to the Church.

Rachel’s Vineyard Retreats
for Healing After Abortion
April 24 to 26
National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa

Rachel's Vineyard is an extraordinary opportunity for any
person who struggles with emotional and spiritual pain of past
abortion(s). The weekend is a unique and effective process
designed specifically to help you experience the mercy and
compassion of God. There are many exercises to help you
grieve your loss and an opportunity to understand and release
the deep feelings of anger, shame, guilt, and grief that
frequently accompanies an abortion experience. This process
is extremely helpful for those who struggle with forgiving
themselves or others. The weekend will help your soul find a
voice, and transform the pain of the past into hope. Rachel's
Vineyard is a "therapy for the soul" which combines a unique
and creative process for psychological and spiritual healing.

OLG New Media Outreach
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
Please join OLGs New Media Outreach in our efforts to bring
OLG and the best contemporary Catholic thought to all our
OLG parishioners: you, your family, friends and neighbors.
As novices in social media we have found it amazing how easy
it is to utilize the Apps, videos, pod streams, DVDs, etc. that
are available online. Each season we will have books and CDs
available in the narthex that will further support the Gospel
message and homilies. Please use them and pass them on.
As you may well know many of our Catholic children and
grandchildren, neighbors and friends are absent from regular
church attendance. This very message is reaching only the
church goers. We can be much needed evangelizers by
reaching others where they spend much of their time ….
Online, Facebook, Twitter.
If Facebook and Twitter are not for you, here’s a start.
Developing your Catholic Faith –
R.C.I.A. and Inquiry Sessions

Inquiry sessions are available for anyone interested in the
RCIA process AND for anyone who is interested in learning
more about the Catholic Faith, including Catholics who are
"coming home". These informal sessions meet in the
Chapel at 7 p.m. every second Tuesday of every month. If
you would like more information, please reach out to Linda
and John Gray by calling 215-766-2057 or email

Week #1 - The
Seven Levels of
Intimacy
|
True intimacy means sharing
who we really are with another
person. We have to move
beyond the clichés in
conversation and get beneath
the surface which involves taking a risk because in doing this,
our weaknesses and imperfections will be made known.
Matthew teaches practical ways to share ourselves more
deeply with those we love and change the way we approach
our relationships forever.
The message of The
Divine Mercy is
simple. It is that God
loves us — all of us.
And, he wants us to
recognize that His
mercy is greater than
our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His
mercy, and let it flow through us to others. Thus, all will come
to share His joy. This message and devotion to Jesus as The
Divine Mercy is based on the writings of Saint Faustina
Kowalska, an uneducated Polish nun who, in obedience to her
spiritual director, wrote a diary of about 600 pages recording
the revelations she received about God's mercy. Even before
her death in 1938, the devotion to The Divine Mercy had
begun to spread. For more information visit: http://
