International Day of Prayer and
Awareness Against Human Trafficking
Sunday, February 8
The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and the International Union of Superiors General has designated February 8 as an annual day of prayer and awareness against human trafficking. February 8 is the feast day of St. Josephine Bakhita, who was kidnapped
as a child and sold into slavery in Sudan and Italy. Once Josephine
was freed, she became a Canossian nun and dedicated her life to
sharing her testament of deliverance from slavery and comforting the
poor and suffering. She was declared a Saint in 2000.
Today, Catholics all over the world are encouraged to create
greater awareness about this sad phenomenon. Through prayer, we
not only reflect on the experiences of those that have suffered
through this affront to human dignity, but also comfort, strengthen,
and help empower survivors.
Officials believe more than 20 million women, children and men
are victims of human trafficking around the world and roughly
175,000 are believed to be trafficked in the United States each year.
Research shows that human trafficking is a $32 billion per year
industry, second only to drug trafficking as the most profitable form of
transnational crime.
The Catholic Church has put a spotlight on the global human
trafficking crisis by declaring the first International Day of Prayer and
Awareness Against Human Trafficking February 8.
Pope Francis told reporters: “Slavery is a reality inserted in the
social fabric today, and has been for some time: slave labor, the
trafficking of persons, the sale of children—it’s a drama. Let’s not
close our eyes to this. Slavery is a reality today, the exploitation of
persons.”
Valentine’s Weekend
Renewal of Marriage Vows
At all Masses next weekend, February 14/15, we will invite all
our married couples to join together in renewing their vows before
God and asking for God’s Blessing of Grace and Love.
Please invite all couples you know (family, neighbors, coworkers) to join us next weekend.

Pope Francis Speaks to our Hearts
Step Forward
If up till now you have kept Him at a distance, step forward. He
will receive you with open arms. If you have been indifferent, take a
risk: you won’t be disappointed.
If following Him seems difficult, don’t be afraid, trust Him, be
confident that He is close to you, He is with you and He will give you
the peace you are looking for and the strength to live as He would
have you do.
Reflection: What makes you afraid of following Jesus? Ask Him to
help you get at the root of your fear and to surrender it to Him.

Prayer of the Week
God of all time and space,
We pray for all those enslaved by the greed and cruelty of others;
For all whose bodies and spirits are abused and broken;
For all who long for freedom.
Bless all those who work to end human trafficking,
At local and international levels.
Shine Your bright light of justice and love
On the darkest corners of our world
And give us hope and courage to stand with You.
We ask in the name of Jesus, our brother and our Friend.
Amen.
Joke of the Week
One week after moving into his first apartment, Ed called his mother
to complain about his neighbors: “One woman cries all day, another
lies in bed moaning, and then there’s the guy who keeps banging his
head against the wall.” “You better keep away from them,” she said.
“I am. I stay inside all day playing my tuba.”

“Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to
a deserted place, where he prayed… He told them, ‘Let
us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there
also. For this purpose have I come.’”
Mark 1:35, 38
In today’s Gospel reading we see a perfect example of
stewardship. Jesus gives His time to do all that God
wishes—healing the sick and preaching. Yet, Jesus also
makes time to be alone in prayer. It is through prayer,
spending time with God, that we find the strength to do
what God wishes us to do. Be sure to find time every
day to be with God.
We pray that, just as Jesus rose early to pray, we too may find
time in our day to be with God and to receive strength and
nourishment from Him.

Gospel Reflection
This Gospel is especially helpful for parents. Many
(maybe most) nights we fall into bed exhausted from a
day of responsibilities. Perhaps it was our intention
throughout the day to find time to pray, but sometimes
we just don’t get to it. At the end of the day, we resolve
to talk with God, but wake in the morning to find out
we fell asleep before we finished the prayer. Jesus gives
us the example that we must take the time away from
the busyness and demands of our lives to be fortified and
strengthened to meet the most important responsibilities
we have—that is the spiritual formation of our children
and our family.
If you don’t have a place in your home where you gather as a family to pray, this Gospel may give you the incentive to establish one. Just a small table with a Bible
on it will do. Allow all the members of your family to
participate in its preparation by adding items that help
everyone feel connected with the area. Try to establish a
family ritual of prayer—perhaps before meals and at
bedtime, when you gather in this area to pray together.
This is a good opportunity to teach children traditional
prayers, but it is also a place where they may speak from
their hearts with petitions, praise, and thanksgiving.
It is important for me to be alone with God when…
The greatest source of strength in my life is…
My greatest need for prayer this week is...
In the Gospel today, we find that Jesus
would rise very early before dawn and
go to a deserted place to pray and then
He went out to preach and to heal.
Please pray for the poor and suffering,
knowing that you are bringing the love
and peace of Jesus to those who live in fear and doubt,
loneliness and dread. For more information, call Joyce
Cain at 636-448-2021 or come to our monthly meeting
next Monday evening (February 16) at 7pm in the Bicentennial Room.
Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo!
St. Charles Borromeo School
Dear Parishioners,
Blessed are the merciful for mercy shall be theirs. That’s the beatitude we are studying for the month of February and for
our Lenten practice this year. To change our hearts means we are seeking God and His mercy. When we practice mercy,
we care about other people and their feelings. Classrooms have displays of the Divine Mercy poster and each person has
received a Divine Mercy prayer card.
Teachers will attend technology workshops this week. As well, Mrs. Taylor and I will visit St. Ambrose School to hear a
researcher speak about his experiences with restorative justice in schools. A group of us will be recertified in CPR later in
the week which maintains 12 teachers with current certification. Then on Friday, classes will celebrate Valentines Day
with a party in the afternoon.
Thank you to everyone for sharing our school with new families. At our recent Open house, we met several prospective
families. Most of them mentioned parishioners who talked highly of our school. Please continue to ask families to consider our school for their children. When asked for the most important traits for a school, families said the following:




Caring teachers
Challenging curriculum
Safe environment
Close relationships among families

SCB Religious Education
Dear Parishioners:
Your prayers and commitment to the success of all our formation programs, especially the Parish School of Religion and
our Sacramental years are so greatly appreciated. As our children preparing for First Holy Communion reflect on Jesus
and the Last Supper, we too can reflect on the Eucharistic prayer prayed at Mass. This prayer is the Church’s great prayer
of thanksgiving. At the Eucharist, through the power of the Holy Spirit, we join with the living Jesus Christ to give praise
and glory to the Father.
How are we as a parish gathering to remember and celebrate Jesus?

Valentine’s Day. Each year on February 14 we peruse the store shelves for the perfect gift or card for a loved one. According to Hallmark, more than 163 million cards—not including packaged kids’ valentines—are exchanged each year!
And it’s not just an American phenomenon. Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom,
France, Australia, Italy and Denmark.
But why? How did this holiday of love and romance originate and, more importantly, how did St. Valentine become
involved? The answers to those questions are not easy ones. Valentine’s Day is a holiday shrouded in mystery and legend.
The origins of St. Valentine’s Day lie in the ancient Roman fertility festival Lupercalia, which was celebrated on February
15. During the festival, young women would place their names in a large urn and young men would draw a name from
the urn and then be romantically linked with that young woman for the following year. Still other legends cite the fact
that February 14 marked the date when birds began mating. The practice of writing letters has been around for a long
time. In fact, the bible is filled with letters—to the Romans, the Corinthians, Timothy, among others.
Letters can be used to inform, scold, praise, entertain or endear. The U.S. bishops write letters to presidents, policymakers
and others to help make the Church teachings and positions known. Individual bishops write letters, too, to their people
to inform and encourage them. People write letters to members of Congress to weigh in on certain legislative issues.
When a network announces it will ne canceling a popular television program, what is often the first course of action? A
letter-writing campaign.
Letters can also serve as lifelines for loved ones separated by distance, war, employment and many other circumstances.
Or they can help bridge a gap between people who may be fighting or are estranged, and just aren’t ready to speak face
to face. Letter writing is becoming a lost art and form of communication with our continued technology evolution. I
encourage everyone to pick a valentine and write a heartfelt letter—use a favorite writing instrument and some heavy
paper. Put the letter in the old fashioned mail and enjoy the delightful reaction of the recipient.
In Masses this weekend, we celebrate the blessings of Sacramental Marriage.

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time—February 8, 2015
Bring your Palm Branches to be Burned to Ashes
Lent begins next week on February 18th as we celebrate Ash Wednesday. It is that special
time during the year when we look for our own conversion. During the year we might fall back on
old habits and at the same time we realize how much we need the Lord in our lives.
How does Lent begin? We stand before the Lord and receive the ashes on our foreheads proclaiming
our need for forgiveness.
We ask you to remember last year and the Sunday of Palm Sunday when we waved the branches proclaiming Jesus as our
Savior. Those branches were a sign for us of our dedication to the Lord, but during the year they dried out and became
brittle—much the same as our good intention to follow Jesus.
We now will burn those palm branches, and the ashes that remain will be the ashes with which we will be anointed on
Ash Wednesday, proclaiming our desire to follow Jesus more closely. Please bring your palm branches back next Sunday
and place them in the basket which you will find before the altar and we shall burn those branches on Tuesday the 17th at
2:00pm with our school children—asking the Lord to give us the help we need to be converted more fully once again.
Please return on Wednesday and be marked with the ashes. Ash Wednesday Masses are:
6:30am - 8:00am - noon (Spanish) - 1:30 (all school Mass) - 7:00pm (bilingual)

vamos a recibirlas cenizas. Que vengan por favor.

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time—February 8, 2015
Luke 18 Reflections
I think that Luke 18 is mostly about swallowing your pride and standing up for Jesus. It is also
about accepting that you are a sinner and asking Jesus for help. I hope I accomplished these
things while I was there.
I didn’t really want to go to Luke 18 at first, but I am so glad I went. The feelings I had there
were awesome, and I wish I could experience them more often. I hope I can (work on the retreat) next year, and let other kids feel what I felt. I am thankful God sent me on Luke 18.
The one bad thing about it is that the feelings there died quickly. I wish they would last forever.
—Garrett
Luke 18 was one of the best experiences I have ever had. The entire (trip) helped me truly think about and focus on
the relationships I have with God, my family, and my faith family. I especially contemplated on how I can improve my
life to become closer to God. During the entire weekend, I was so involved and absorbed into the retreat that I didn’t
have any worries or anxieties like I do during my daily life. I’ve never been closer to God before, and having this time
with Him was so surreal and amazing.
The trip wasn’t exactly what I expected; it was more enjoyable and thought-provoking than I could have ever imagined. The games that we played in the gym were fun; were a great in-between breakout sessions from the prayerful side
of the retreat. These parts were what I was dreading the most before I went into Luke 18, but they turned out to be the
most significant part of the whole event. The talks were very inspiring, and the group conversations I had with my “tribe”
showed me a whole new perspective in my faith. During the writing and burning of the letters, followed by Reconciliation and Adoration, I could fee the Holy Spirit working in me, driving me with the courage to do the things that were so
hard for me to do before. Once I asked for and gave forgiveness, then let it go into the fire for Jesus, I felt so liberated, as
if a burden that I had been carrying for so long finally got lifted off of my conscience.
The best part of the retreat for me was the music and the time I got to spend with my friends. I loved being able to
sing out the songs that were introduced to us; they were catchy and fun to sing, but the messages that were in those songs
were fantastic. Every moment I spent with my friends, whether we were singing songs, playing games, eating delicious
food, or messing around in the sleep houses, was absolutely priceless. I will never forget this experience, and how I really
felt God working in me and my friends through the Holy Spirit.
—Arianna
During my Luke 18 experience I felt happy, anxious, a little nervous, thankful, and hopeful. I had heard so many different things about Luke 18 and I was excited to experience it myself. Going into the retreat I was hoping that all of us
would find God even more. It wasn’t that we didn’t know God or didn’t have a relationship with Him, it was just that
we all kind of didn’t know what to think about God. There had been a lot of tension in our grade between girls and
girls, boys and boys and even girls and boys but for this weekend it was almost like none of that even existed. And it was
amazing.
I remember loving the singing and dancing for fun to praise God and listening to inspirational talks that in your own
way you could relate but there was one thing that weekend that I was really thankful for. There was a lot of history between me and another person. I remember coming home upset not knowing what to do about the things that were said
about me and to me. I was just very confused at that time about why people did these things.
It didn’t come to me until the night of the letter burning when we had the chance to write to people that needed my
forgiveness or who I needed forgiveness from. Memories came flooding back from the past and I just couldn’t handle it.
I literally cried my eyes out. But I needed that. I needed to be able to let go of everything. We were all crying together
and hugging each other. It wasn’t until that person that I had trouble with for many years came up to me and asked for a
hug, so I’m thinking sure I’ll give you a hug, why not. And while we were hugging I heard that person whisper, “I’m sorry for everything I did.” I was in shock, I was hugging that person with my mouth dropped and crying.
I didn’t expect for the things that happened that weekend to happen at all. And I’m so thankful they did. We are becoming friends again and I hope it will last. So I guess I could say that my Luke 18 experience was a very emotional one,
but in a good way. I found God even more that weekend and I now know that He will answer my prayers if it is really
important. I am truly touched and I will definitely want o help next year.

Journeying Through Grief
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Grief Ministry is offering a Christ-centered support group for anyone who is mourning the loss of
a loved one: no matter how recent nor how long ago. Participants are invited to bring a guest. There are times in our
lives when we need a little more support, a few more prayers, or an extra ear to be there for us. When loved ones die,
people deal with that loss in different ways. For many, grief support is helpful in beginning a journey toward healing. A
support group will share with you ways to keep your loved one’s memory alive. They’ll get you through the first
months, holidays and anniversaries. Even when you are past the most painful times, it is a place where you can come
back.
If you feel apprehensive, remember that you are not alone, many might be as anxious as you. You can be assured that
when you attend, you will be walking into a room full of people who understand. Anything shared in the group is held
confidential. There will be people like you and me who have been devastated and surprised by the magnitude of our
losses.
The group will meet on four consecutive Tuesday evenings in March (3, 10, 17 and 24) from 7:00—8:30pm. Once a
month follow-up sessions will follow. The location is the SEAS Rectory Basement Meeting Room at 2 Seton Court.
