Hello everyone, the winter sports seasons are already coming into the final third of their seasons. It seems like this year is going by very
fast. The girls varsity team is 8-8 as I write this and they have been playing real well as of late. I hope, and I know coach Marty hopes
they are starting to peak at the right time. They have had nice wins over North Shore Country Day, Faith Christian, Schaumburg
Christian, Westminster and Harvard all at home in front of a great crowds. I can’t tell you how important a good crowd can be to the kids,
if you were at the games you saw great games, a great crowd and the girls played their hearts out!!! That’s what high school basketball is
all about. The girls have 8 games remaining before they start Regional play over at Christian Liberty Academy on Feb. 9 th. Keep up the
good work and bring home a Regional Championship!!! The high school boys team is 6-10 as I write this and the boys have been playing
very hard. The kids have had some up and down games this year but are constantly competing and showing improvement. The boys have
10 games left before they head into Regional play right here at Alden-Hebron starting on Feb. 23rd. There are several home games left so
come out and support the kids, they would love to have some big enthusiastic crowds. It would also be great to get a Regional win right
here at home!!! The wrestlers are almost at the end of their season with just two meets left before they head to the Regionals at Rockford
Lutheran on Feb. 7th. It looks like we have the possibility of once again getting a Regional Champion and possibly a State Qualifier.
Colten and David always do a great job and they are two of the hardest working kids in this school. I also want to mention that the Giants
In Motion are performing at all the home games and if you
haven’t had a chance to see them come on out and watch the girls
perform, they put a lot of work into it.
Saturday March 7 2015
Some important dates to remember: Senior night for girls
basketball, boys basketball and Giants in Motion is 2/6/15 vs.
Berean Baptist starting at 4:30 with the FS boys game. March 7 th
will be the Alumni Basketball Games starting at 3:00 p.m. and
March 1st will be the winter sports banquet starting at 4:00.
Keep working hard and GO GIANTS!!!!

Miss Kelly's fourth grade class has been busy
researching various health topics for their
service learning project. Their goal is to
spread the word about important health
concerns to as many people as possible.
The students have held conferences calls
with numerous organizations, have made
video calls to physicians, as well as hosted
several face-to-face interviews to gain as
much information as possible. They will be
presenting their research at the Health and
Wellness Fair on Saturday, February 7th
from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m.
Dear Families,
On March 6, 2015, the Parent Involvement Committee will be hosting
a Culture Fair. The goal of this night is to share individual cultures
and educate the school community in hopes of creating greater
understanding of the similarities and differences amongst cultures of
the world. We are looking for families or individuals who would be
willing to share their culture or heritage with our elementary school
community. Culture can be reflected in both objects and ideas:
Music
Literature
Art or Crafts
Food/Cuisine
Clothing
Cultural Artifacts
Games
Holidays/Festivals/
Celebrations
Beliefs/Customs/Traditions
Language
History
Religion
Dance
If you are interested in contributing to our Culture Fair on
March 6th, please

Penguins in the Classroom?
Students in Mrs. VanderPal’s second grade classroom
used IBL (Inquiry-Based Learning) for their crosscurricular unit in Life Science. The unit specifically
focused on: reading non-fiction and fiction books about
penguins, composing stories/poems about penguins,
creating math problems/graphs using penguin data,
conducting experiments about blubber, and using digital
tools.
As a culminating project, students did their own research
and used the data to create a Google webpage for each
of the seventeen penguin species. In addition to their
webpage, they created a model of their specific species
using various materials/mediums. The penguin projects
can be viewed in the elementary display case.
As a grand finale Mrs. Geils, the Media Specialist, contacted Brookfield Zoo to set up a Facetime interview with
the zoo’s librarian for a virtual field trip. Students eagerly
wrote questions to ask Mrs. Owens. Then on Jan. 22, the
iPad screen was projected onto the whiteboard and
before the students eyes the Penguin Exhibit had come
into their classroom! Mrs. Owens walked the students
through the exhibit as she answered all of the questions.
The unanimous highlight was when Pepe, a Humboldt
penguin, curiously followed Mrs. Owens as she walked
around with the iPad. At the conclusion of the interview,
after the thank you and goodbyes, is when true magic
happened. The students were amazed and in awe that
they had just been to the zoo!

Academic Information
Quarter 3 ends on Wednesday, March 11th. Right now is a fresh start to a new quarter and second semester! If you don’t like what your Quarter 2 report card
or Semester 1 transcript looked like, please make some changes that are going to help you be more academically successful this year. Make sure you are
taking advantage of this by continuing to work hard and get your best work turned in on time. If you need help or have questions – ASK YOUR TEACHERS!
Course Selection Information
Attention all 8th graders and high school students: You will all be meeting with and given course selection sheets to use to pick out your classes for next year.
Those sheets must be signed by a parent and returned to Mrs. Schuda if you want a choice in your classes for next year. After Mrs. Schuda reviews eligibility,
she will sit down individually with each student to solidify their class choices. Parents, please look over the class choices with your students. Once classes are
chosen, it will be very difficult to make changes to your student’s future schedule, as we use these numbers to delineate classes, hire teachers, and create the
master schedule.
Parent Teacher Conferences
Check the mail for a conference request from AHMS or AHHS. Please contact the office at 815-648-2442 if you have any questions or need to change your
conference time.
Thursday, February 12th: 4:00-8:00pm
Friday, February 13th: 12:00pm-8:00pm
FAFSA Completion Workshop for students AND PARENTS!
On Thursday, February 12th, we will have a FAFSA expert in the middle school computer lab to assist students and parents in filling out the FAFSA. The expert
can offer one-on-one assistance to actually help you complete the entire application! Please bring your tax information if you have it and come ready to learn
and be productive! After your student’s conference you can go to the computer lab at any time for help, there’s no need to sign up ahead of time for it!
College and Career Readiness
10th Grade Field Trip: The entire sophomore class will be going on a field trip to MCC on a date TBD. The purpose of this field trip is designed to introduce
the idea of career planning to the sophomores. This is a great opportunity for sophomores to start their college and career planning journey. Permission slips
will be handed out as soon as a date is set.
Parents:
College Visits: Parents, do you have a sophomore or junior considering college? Senior year is right around the corner and students will have to begin
applying for schools as soon as September 1st rolls around. Help prepare them by taking them on college visits and researching various schools with them.
Scholarships: If you have a senior who has applied to college, please encourage him/her to start researching various scholarship opportunities. We have a list
of scholarships that AHHS has received that is available for all students, but students will find the most scholarship money by typing “scholarships” into the
search engine at each specific school they have applied for admissions. Please check the guidance bulletin board at school, as well as our website:
http://alden-hebron.org/scholarships/
FAFSA: Regardless of your financial situation, all students who are planning to attend a 2 or 4 year college are highly encouraged to fill out a FAFSA. The
sooner you fill this out, the better! The 2015/2016 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the form students must complete in order to be
considered for the federal and state grants, federal work-study, & student loans. Last year grant money (FREE money going toward your college education that
you don’t pay back) RAN OUT at the very end of February! If you are eligible for any sort of student financial assistance, you want to be able to collect this
money before there isn’t any left. Please go to www.fafsa.ed.gov to fill it out, or come to our FAFSA Completion Workshop on Thursday, February 12th in the
middle school computer lab. If a FAFSA website ever asks you for a payment, you are on the wrong website! It is absolutely FREE to submit.
Upcoming Events in the School and Community
FAFSA Completion Workshop at AHHS: There will be an expert here during parent-teacher conferences to sit down with parents and help them actually fill
out the FAFSA together for their students. The FAFSA expert will be upstairs in the middle school computer lab on Thursday, February 12th at 6pm to conduct
the parent workshop and help parents fill out this form. BRING YOUR TAX FORMS AND INFORMATION!
FAFSA Completion Workshop at McHenry County College: There is another workshop opportunity for help with the FAFSA on Thursday, February 19th at
MCC from 5:30 – 8:00pm in room A113. A reservation is required at MCC-not at AHHS. To make a reservation, please call (815) 455-8761, or visit the financial
aid office at MCC in room A262.
MCC’s Career Exploration Expo: This is the event of the year to help excite and re-energize our community about career possibilities in the area. Hear
companies in manufacturing, healthcare, social assistance, finance, and more talk about what they do and demonstrate some of the jobs that people can have
at those organizations. MIDDLE SCHOOL through SOPHOMORES and their families should attend. See Mrs. Schuda and the guidance website for more
information.
http://alden-hebron.org/guidance/
Testing Information
MAP Testing: Winter MAP Testing will begin February 2 nd for the Middle and High School. Please pay attention to your specific dates and times.
Parents, please help us encourage students to do their best! We use this data to help determine course placements, as well as interventions.

Brrrrrrrr, It’s cold outside! Cold Environments –
Health Effects and First Aid.
It’s very important to listen to mother nature during the winter months because it is very easy to get cold
quickly if you are outside in wet, windy, or cold weather. It can also happen if you spend time in
a building that is not well heated. Keep an eye on the weather forecast and let’s make sure that we are
sending our kids to school in the proper winter attire, we’re bundling up before work and taking care of
our four legged friends too!
Toes, fingers, and ears are at greatest risk because these areas do not have any major muscles to help
produce body heat. Also the body shunts blood flow to the extremities to help preserve heat for the internal organs.
There are two classifications of cold injuries; nonfreezing and freezing.
Nonfreezing injuries such as trench foot or chilblains, may cause pale and blistered skin like frostbite after the skin has been warmed.
These injuries occur from spending too much time in cold but not freezing temperatures. The skin does not actually freeze.
Freezing injuries include frostnip which is when the top layer of skin freezes. The skin may look white and feel numb and it will feel hard on
top but the layers of skin underneath feel soft. Frostbite is caused by exposure to extreme cold or by contact with extremely cold objects like
metal. The skin temp will fall below the freezing point of 0°C/32°F. Blood vessels can be damaged and obstruct the blood flow to tissue
leading to tissue death. In mild cases, symptoms include inflammation of the skin in patches with slight pain. In severe cases, there can be
tissue damage without pain, burning or prickling sensations, blisters. The skin is highly susceptible to infection and gangrene.
Eye pain or changes in vision can be caused by cold exposure as well. Sunlight reflecting off the snow can cause injury to the cornea or even
burn them. Eyelids may become red and swollen, or feel dry as though they have sand in them.
The most serious injury from cold exposure is hypothermia, which is when the bodies core temperature drops below 33°C or 93°F. First you
will feel the sensation of cold followed by pain in the exposed part then you will experience numbness and loss of sensation. Next comes
muscular weakness and drowsiness. This condition is serious and requires immediate medical attention.
First aid for Frostnip, frostbite, and trench foot includes: seeking medical attention, move victim to a warm area, loosen anything that
constricts circulation, loosely cover affected area with sterile dressing, DO NOT attempt to rewarm the affected area, DO NOT rub area or
apply dry heat, DO NOT drink alcohol or smoke. Transport victim to emergency care facility immediately.

Alden-Hebron District #19 will hold the annual Preschool
Screening on Thursday, March 19th at the Elementary School.
The screening takes approximately 45 minutes and is open to
children that live within our school boundaries that will turn
three before September 1st, 2015. The screening evaluates
language development, motor development, and concept
knowledge; parents/guardians need to be in attendance
during the screening process. Screening results are the
primary consideration for fall entry into the Preschool Program. Students currently
enrolled in Alden-Hebron Elementary School's Preschool Program do not need to be
re-screened. If you are interested in enrolling your three or four-year-old in preschool for
the 2015/2016 school year, please contact Jan Hall at 815-648-2442 during the week of
February 23rd to schedule an appointment.
Screening will be done by appointment only.
