The Head and Neck Cancer Alliance OHANCAW® 2014 Public Relations Activities and Media Coverage Report Prepared by MCS Healthcare Public Relations June 25, 2014 The Head and Neck Cancer Alliance 2014 Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week® (OHANCAW)® Public Relations Activities and Media Overview Executive Summary For the twelfth consecutive year, MCS was asked by the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance (HNCA) to develop and implement a multi-faceted public and media relations program designed to: Raise public awareness of disease symptoms and risk factors associated with oral, head and neck cancers (OHNC) Drive professional and public participation in the nationwide free screenings conducted during the 17th annual Oral, Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Week (OHANCAW), which was held nationwide April 20-26. To achieve these goals, MCS collaborated with Terry A. Day, M.D., president of the HNCA, who co-authored a first-of-its-kind oropharyngeal or throat cancer study published online in JAMA Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery on March 20, 2014. Findings from the study and the timing of publication provided the ideal platform to draw media and public attention to the most common initial symptoms of HPV-positive (neck mass) and HPV-negative (persistent sore throat) oral, head and neck cancer and OHANCAW activities. The media relations strategy was two-fold: Leverage timely findings of the study that was co-authored by the president of the organization that organizes OHANCAW, and use them to… Increase the public’s awareness of oral, head and neck cancers and underscore the need for screening as early detection can increase a patient’s chance of survival The four primary objectives of the OHANCAW 2014 PR initiative were to: Raise awareness of oral, head and neck cancers, especially those who smoke, use chewing tobacco or consume excessive amounts of alcohol, and young adults who have been orally exposed to the cancer-causing human papillomavirus or HPV Highlight the signs and symptoms of OHNC and stress the importance of early detection Encourage health professionals and/or medical facilities to participate in OHANCAW activities and serve as “free screening” sites Drive members of the public, particularly those at risk, to the free nationwide screenings during OHANCAW MCS executed a professional and media relations campaign to meet these objectives on both a national and local level. Elements of the initiative included: 2 Use of print and electronic media at the national and local levels to deliver key messages about OHANCAW 2014 and drive participation in the free oral cancer screenings at sites nationwide and around the world Outreach to 13 professional organizations with a focus on oral, head and neck cancer, to encourage their members to host OHANCAW screening sites and help spread awareness Development of a national and local press release in collaboration with Dr. Terry Day (1) highlighting results from the first-of-its-kind throat cancer study published online in JAMA Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery on March 20, 2014 and (2) encouraging the public to get free screenings at local sites around the country Dissemination of local press release to screening site coordinators throughout the United States Implementation of additional press activities, such as creating targeted national and local media lists; developing tailored pitches per reporter’s area of expertise/location; pitching press release; coordinating media interviews, media monitoring and coverage reporting As a result of the 2014 OHANCAW professional and media relations campaign, driven largely by findings from the JAMA Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery study and OHANCAW messaging, an audience of more than 59 million was reached through national and local communications activities. As a direct outcome of those media outreach efforts and results, a total of 280 sites participated in OHANCAW 2014. With 62 percent of this year’s sites reporting screening results as of this writing, it appears that those 176 sites alone screened a total of 9,828 individuals, 3,319 of whom were referred for routine follow-up with 1,029 referred for further evaluation and 256 referred for immediate consultation because of a suspected neoplasm. As a result of the free screening attendance, potentially 1,285 lives may have been saved thanks to early detection. Following is a more detailed discussion of each PR tactic executed to support OHANCAW 2014. Professional Organization Outreach To help promote OHANCAW this year, MCS contacted 13 key professional and patient advocacy organizations whose goals are aligned with those of the HNCA, and who participated in OHANCAW activities during previous years. MCS reached out to the communications contacts at these organizations to encourage them to share details about OHANCAW 2014 with their members via internal communications vehicles and to host screening sites at their respective practices and institutions. The following organizations were included in this initial national outreach: American Academy of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery American Academy of Nurse Practitioners The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Support for People with Oral Head and Neck Cancer The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (IAOMS) 3 "Society of Physician Assistants in Otorhinolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery" Society of Otorhinolaryngology and Head-Neck Nurses (SOHN) Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) Dysphagia Research Society American Head and Neck Society American Dental Hygienists' Association Through the initial outreach to organizations, information about OHANCAW 2014 successfully reached tens of thousands of the most relevant health providers for oral, head and neck cancer screening purposes. Provided below are screen shots of some of the secured placements stemming from the organization outreach effort. American Academy of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck (AAO-HNS) Surgery published an interview with Dr. Cherie-Ann Nathan, Professor and Chairman, Department of Otolaryngology/HNS at LSU Health Shreveport and HNCA board member in the April issue of their member publication, the Bulletin. This publication reaches a membership of 12,000 physcicians. 4 5 6 AAO-HNS also ran a brief on OHANCAW 2014, linking to the screening site sign-up page, in their weekly E-Newsletter Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week® – Host a Screening Head and Neck Cancer Alliance Share Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week® is scheduled for April 20-26. MORE The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) included a brief article publicizing and promoting participation in OHANCAW 2014 within their e-news AANP SmartBrief, which reaches an audience of 33,000 member nurse practitioners. 7 National Press Release To promote OHANCAW 2014, MCS, developed a national press release to coincide with the online publication of the head and neck cancer study featured in JAMA Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery. The press release was issued over PRNewswire on Thursday, March 20th. It highlighted the study findings and encouraged the public to take advantage of the free oral cancer screenings at their local sites. Immediately following the distribution of the press release, MCS e-mailed the information to a targeted list of media outlets across the country and conducted custom pitching to selected outlets, offering the opportunity to interview Dr. Day for additional information. The national press release posted to more than 250 online media outlets the day of distribution, reaching more then 55 million readers. The majority of these outlets are listed in an Appendix at the end of this report. Local Press Release To help promote OHANCAW screenings in the local markets, MCS developed an electronic customizable press release that was shared with screening site coordinators around the country. Site coordinators could easily tailor / populate the news release by adding their location, screening dates and contact information and distributing to media contacts in their area. Original Media Coverage Distribution of the national press release and customized pitching to select outlets generated original coverage in several online and print publications. Provided below are screen shots and links to placements secured through outreach efforts. It reports on information about FDA approvals and includes short pieces on timely health topics. 12 13 14 Midland Daily News, a local outlet, strives to be a thorough source of local area news and information for its Midland, MI readership. 15 16 Medical XPress- Medical Xpress features the most comprehensive coverage in medical research and health news in the fields of neuroscience, cardiology, cancer, HIV/AIDS, psychology, psychiatry, dentistry, genetics, diseases and conditions, medications and more, reaching out to over 2 million monthly viewers. 17 18 Doctors Lounge- Doctors Lounge is one of the most popular online medical resources for physicians, students and allied clinical professionals.
