Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishor Manikya Bahadur, the last illustrious king of Tripura was the architect and founder of this pioneering
institution of higher learning in the state which was established in the year 1947. The sprawling college campus is spread over an area of 70

The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) pioneered the development of Statistical Quality Control (SQC) movement in India. Prof. W. A.
Shewhart (the originator of SQC) came to India at the invitation of the Institute and stimulated interest among Indian industrialists, along
with visits of Mr. T. Hanada of Japan and Mr. D. J. Desmond of U.K. during 1953-54. The follow-up work done by the Institute led to the
recognition of SQC as a useful technique in the industry. The Statistical Quality Control and Operations Research (SQC & OR) Division
set up in 1953, now operates with 8 units. The basic objective of the Division is to propagate the use of SQC & OR and allied management
techniques for improving quality, enhancing productivity, reduce manufacturing cost and losses in industries. The Calcutta Unit was started
in the middle of September 1954 under the guidance of Dr. G. Taguchi, an SQC expert and specialist in design of experiments. Presently, the
Kolkata Unit, consisting of 16 faculty members, offers consultancy services, in-plant and general training course for industrial personnel,
systems development in the areas of quality control, quality management and six sigma, reliability, operations research, business analytics
etc. along with a M.Tech. programme in QR & OR and a Ph.D. programme in the same discipline. Conducting workshops, seminars,
symposiums are regular activities of this Kolkata Unit.
