2020 Vision: Purchasing Visibility & Risk Management (Opening Keynote)
- Vivien Ryan, Director, PwC
With so many essential business services now outsourced – both directly and indirectly – there
is usually a complex chain of providers on the end of every major purchasing decision,
especially in areas such as IT and technology infrastructure. For procurement professionals,
this complex network of ‘hidden’ suppliers presents significant challenges around visibility and
contract management, with high potential for poor performance (or even disaster) if the risks
are not fully identified and addressed.
In this opening keynote, Vivien Ryan from PwC explains why visibility, contracting and clear
costing structures can often be more important than the specific choice of service provider.
Using the latest thinking on best practice and real-life examples, Vivien will discuss how to
make informed procurement decisions that will save money and minimise risk, simply by
unpacking and understanding the core components of any third-party service.

Technology Helps but Engagement Delivers (Session Y)
- Tony Stanyard, Head of Procurement, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust
Although under significant financial pressure to deliver major cost-down initiatives, the NHS has
to deal with ever-increasing demand. It is essential that we focus on ensuring that patient
outcomes and experiences are not compromised.
I want to review the basics of finding out what clinical customers want by being able to engage
with them clinically. Recognising that the benefits of technology can improve efficiency is
important but not as important as ensuring that you can understand the requirements of your
customer and deliver in accordance with their needs. Using a mixture of humour and example, I
hope to convince people that engagement can deliver greater results (in the NHS) than
technology, whilst acknowledging that technology is a vital back-office tool.
