Brotherhood/Sisterhood Awards
Holy Ghost Catholic School also recognized the
recipients of the Brotherhood/Sisterhood awards.
This award program is sponsored by the National
Conference for Community and Justice. It is designed to recognized persons who demonstrate a
true concern for their fellow human beings regardless of race, religion, or academic achievements. Voted on by co-workers, this award is given annually.

Annual Golf Tournament
Students of the Year
Now that everyone has had time to recover from the fair,
its time to begin planning our Annual Golf Tournament
and Golf Ball Drop Fundraiser! Please mark your calendars for Thursday, April 16 at 8am. We will once again
be hosting the tournament at Carter Plantation. More
information will be going home with you child soon!
This week, the first grade students at Holy Ghost
CathoHoly Ghost Catholic School is proud to announce the Students of the Year. Selected based
on criteria including grades, behavior, standardized test scores, interview, and writing sample, these students represent HGCS very well.
As with any major event or fundraiser, we rely on the
help of parent volunteers to make it successful! If you are
interested in serving on the Golf Tournament Committee, please try to join us for Thursday, February
5th at 6pm at the school office for our first meeting. If
you would like to serve on the committee but are unable
to make our first meeting, please email me at hgsfair@
gmail.com and we can find ways for you to use your time
and talent help make the golf tournament a success!
We are looking forward to another successful tourney and can’t wait to get started!

Students may not wear their sweatpants on Wednesday, irregardless of
the temperature. They must be in their
regular school uniform for pictures.

Catholic Schools Week
During the week of January 26th, Holy Ghost Catholic School joined the nation in celebrating Catholic Schools Week. As part of the week long festivities, teachers were treated to a breakfast on Tuesday
morning. Along with food, fellowship, and fun, the
teachers, along with local dignitaries, had the pleasure of listening to the Distinguished Graduate, Mr.
Brad McKee. On this occasion, Mr. McKee fondly
recalled memories of his days as a student at HGCS.
Claiming that he wasn’t the “best” student, but not the
“worst” one either, Mr. McKee told how his Catholic
education formed him into the man he is today. Mr.
McKee is a former Marine, having served 4 tours overseas, and the founder of Disposable Heroes as well
as the owner of Crossfit in Hammond. Having led
and continuing to lead a life of service, he was a perfect example of the Catholic mission to serve others.
During
the
breakfast,
several
teachers were recognized as award recipients also.
Mrs. Kimberly Inman was selected by her peers as
Teacher of the Year. A graduate of HGCS herself, Mrs. Inman has taught 5th and 6th grade
Social Studies at HGCS for 11 years. She is
the sponsor of National Junior Honor Society.
Mrs. Cindy Wagner received the Wilson-Wells Teaching Award. Established in 1974 by an anonymous
family to express their gratitude for the years their children spent at HGCS, one teacher is recognized annually
for directing the moral and social values of students, acknowledging and respecting the administrative policy
of the school, and demonstrating leadership. Chosen
by her co-workers, Mrs. Wagner has taught at HGCS
for 11 years and is currently the B-Quest teacher.

hoping to have ballots ready for you to vote

100 Days of School!
Kindergarten students at Holy Ghost Catholic School
celebrated 100 days of being smarter on Wednesday,
January 28, 2015. Adorned in capes with 100 objects, students participated in activities that taught

The first grade students at Holy Ghost Catholic School celebrated 100 days of school on Friday,
January 23. The students spent time in centers, all
focusing on the theme of 100. They decorated hats,
built cup structures, painted gumballs, made 100
day smarter glasses, and flipped a coin 100 times.

Recycling
This week, the first grade students at Holy Ghost Catholic School are learning about the 3 R’s: Reduce/Reuse/
Recycle. After the students completed an activity where
they sorted, cut and glued the items that can be recycled,
the students in Mrs. Dianne Cothern’s class decided to
make one of their trash cans a recycling bin. Pictured
are Luke Lambert and Nora Faulk showing how they
can recycle paper. The students plan on recycling their
paper daily. Mrs. Dianne will then take the paper to
her recycling bin where it will be picked up weekly.
Punctuation Lesson
Students in Mrs. Alissa Dunn’s first grade class at
Holy Ghost Catholic School spend time reviewing
punctuation. Each student was given an index card
with a punctuation mark. The student then took a
mystery object from a bag and had to create a sentence to go with that punctuation mark. Pictured is

Parents,
It’s time to figure out who wants to play for the 3/4 grade basketball teams. In order to do this, we need several
things turned in by Wednesday, February 11th. If any one of these items are not turned in by the time the office closes
on Wednesday, February 11th, your child cannot play.
What we need in order for your child to play:
1. The Student Information form from the bottom of this sheet filled out.
2. A check made payable to “Holy Ghost Athletics” for $65.
3. A copy of the parental insurance card.
4. A Physical form filled out (not a doctor’s note, a physical form. Your doctor should have these).
5. A filled out Sport/Activity Consent form.
6. A Parent/Student Contractual Agreement filled out.
(If your child has played a sport for Holy Ghost during this school year, we should have the last 4 items already on file. You
will still need to pay the fee and fill out this form stating intent to play)
Your child will receive a 27.5” basketball at the end of the league season. That is the size basketball we will be
using. They will also be able to keep the uniform we are ordering them (shirt and shorts). I’m pretty sure the goal height
will be 9’ feet for boys and 8’6” for girls.
There will be two different types of teams that your child will be on. One will be a “Practice Team” (Practice
Team 1, Practice Team 2, etc.). The other will be a “Game Team” (Red Team, Blue Team, etc.). In order to maximize
playing time, I’ll try to keep Game Teams to 8-9 players. Practice Teams will be 12-15 players. This will allow a few
more practices for everyone.
As soon as I know who all intends to play I will assign each player to a specific Practice Team and get this info
out to you, including when your child’s team practices are as soon as I can, hopefully by Friday, February 13th. Game
Teams will not be assigned till after the first week of practicing. Coach Lanaux, who will be assisting me again this year,
will help me evaluate everyone during the first week of practices and we will assign them to different Game Teams.
Also, please check your email address on file with the office. Email will be the method I use to communicate
with you and if the email which the school has isn’t one that you check often, or if it is incorrect, you will not get critical
information. Once we get all the students who are interested, the office will make a list for me to be able to email info
about practice times, what team your child is on, etc , to you. This is the simplest way to convey information to you.
The first two weeks of the season will be strictly practices. The practice times will be as follows:

What time your child’s team practices will alternate each day. After those first two weeks, we will not practice past 545
on days in which we have no games. There will be no practices or games on weekends. All games will be at Trafton
Academy during the week. As soon as I know the game schedule I’ll get that info out to everyone.
There will be a Mardi Gras Basketball Skills Camp for 3rd and 4th graders from the 19th - 21st. There is a flyer included in this email.

A product of Hammond, Potts brings several years of experience of working with top programs at
both the collegiate, high school and AAU levels to Holy
Ghost.
Coach Potts is finishing his sixth season as Head Coach
for both the HGS Boys and Girls basketball teams. This
will be the fourth season of 3rd/4th grade boys and girls
teams, which he started to continue developing the basketball skills and interests of students at HGCS at an even
earlier age.
At the AAU level, he was the head coach of the Ponchatoula Hurricanes Girls Basketball team for three seasons
when they competed as 6th, 7th and 8th graders. The team
was comprised of players from all over the Northshore
area. As 6th and 7th graders, not only were they Louisiana
State Champions for their age division but, they also finished as National Runners-Up at AAU Nationals. In their
8th grade season they came in 7th in the nation at AAU
nationals.
Other experience includes:
Assistant coach for both the boys (for two seasons)
and girls (for one season) basketball teams at St. Thomas Aquinas, his alma mater, starting with the ‘08-’09
season.
After college, he was the top assistant for the
women’s basketball program at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. In his one season
with the Cardinals he helped guide them to a 15-11
record.

while in college as a practice squad player.

Camp Objectives
Through teaching basketball fundamentals and
competition, I hope that each young player leaves
camp as a better player. Many of the drills I plan to
introduce them to are things that they can practice
on their own at home to make themselves better. I
want all campers to walk away from camp having
had a positive experience with the game of basketball and to want to continue to play it.
