December 16, 2014
Nick Gwiazdowski, NC State
Nick Sulzer, Virginia
Max Thomusseit, Pitt
A trio of Atlantic Coast Conference wrestlers
who are unbeaten and have earned high national
rankings have been named the initial ACC Wrestlers of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
NC State junior heavyweight Nick Gwiazdowski (Delanson, N.Y.), Pitt senior 184-pounder Max
Thomusseit (St. Paris, Ohio) and Virginia senior
165-pounder Nick Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio) were
named ACC tri-wrestlers of the week Tuesday for
their performances through the first five weeks
of the 2014-15 season.
Gwiazdowski, the defending national heavyweight champion, has posted a 16-0 record to
date, including a 6-0 mark in dual meet competition. He captured individual honors at the prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling
Invitational and also the Wolfpack Open. In Las
Vegas, Gwiazdowski defeated 15th-ranked Blaize
Cabelll of Northern Iowa and ninth-ranked Ty
Waltz of Virginia Tech. He is ranked second
nationally in the latest Intermat Wrestling Rankings.
Thomusseit, ranked No. 1 nationally at 184
pounds by Intermat, is 9-0 on the year, having
defeated 10th-ranked Vic Avery of Edinboro, 5-3;
sixth-ranked Nathaniel Brown of Lehigh, 6-4;
and third-ranked Lorenzo Thomas of Penn, 5-3.
Thomusseit took home individual honors in the
Keystone Classic and helped lead the Panthers to
a dual meet win over former ACC foe Maryland.
Sulzer, ranked No. 2 nationally at 165 pounds
by Intermat, has gotten off to a 10-0 start, including wins over 12th-ranked Cooper Moore of
Northern Iowa and ninth-ranked Taylor Walsh of
Indiana. He captured the 165-pound crown at
the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, defeating
Walsh in the title bout. Of his 10 victories this
year, seven have been by major decision, technical fall or fall.
ACC Wrestler of the Week
December 23, 2015
Zach Epperly, Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech redshirt freshman Zach Epperly
is the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the
Week for Dec. 23, after leading the sixth-ranked
Hokies to a near upset at fourth-ranked Penn
State last week.
Epperly, from Christiansburg, Va., is 10-2
on the season in the 174-pound weight class
after defeating Penn State’s Matt Brown, 8-6
in sudden victory. Brown is currently ranked
second nationally at 174 and is the 2013 NCAA
runner-up in that weight class. Epperly was
ranked ninth nationally in last week’s InterMat
national rankings.
The win by Epperly and one by the Hokies’
Austin Gable gave Tech a 15-14 lead in the
match, but Tech dropped the match at 197 and
a very close decision at heavyweight to fall to
the unbeaten Nittany Lions.
Epperly earned ACC Wrestler of the Week
honors over Duke sophomore 184-pounder Jacob Kasper and NC State junior and defending
national champion heavyweight Nick Gwiazdowski.
Kasper (Lexington, Ohio) captured three
matches in leading the Blue Devils to a trio of
dual meet wins in third annual Grapple at the
Garden in New York City, including wins over
Northern Iowa (21-16), George Mason (24-9)
and Maryland (24-9). The Blue Devils’ 24 points
against the Terrapins tied for the second-most
in the 70 meetings between the two programs
as Kasper scored five team points for a technical fall (21-5).
Gwiazdowski (Delanson, N.Y.), ranked No.
2 nationally, remained unbeaten on the season
in 16 matches by posting a 15-6 major decision over 19th-ranked (FloWrestling) Denzel
Dejournette of Appalachian State in leading the
Wolfpack to a 29-12 victory.
ACC Wrestler of the Week
January 6, 2015
Joey Dance, Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech sophomore Joey Dance is the
Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week
after winning the individual title at 125 pounds
at the prestigious Midlands Championships in
Evanston, Ill. last week.
Dance, from Christiansburg, Va., won five
straight matches to take the title, the first for a
Virginia Tech grappler since 2012. Dance defeated 14th-ranked Josh Rodriguez of San Diego
State, 7-1, in the semifinals and Iowa’s Thomas
Gillman, the nation’s fourth-ranked wrestler,
3-1, in the second sudden victory in the championship.
The five wins pushed his overall record for the
year to 16-2 and led Virginia Tech to a fifth-place
finish in the Midlands. Dance is now ranked
fourth nationally at 125 pounds by InterMat.
Dance earned selection over a trio of ACC
wrestlers in Pitt’s Max Thomusseit (St. Paris,
Ohio), Duke’s Connor Hartmann (Port Orchard,
Wash.) and North Carolina’s Joey Ward (Cleveland, Ohio). He becomes the second straight
Tech wrestler to earn ACC Wrestler of the Week
5
honors, following in the footsteps of redshirt
freshman Zach Epperly who was honored on
Dec. 23.
Thomusseit captured four straight matches
at 184 pounds in the prestigious Southern
Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn., before dropping
the championship bout to seventh-ranked Gabriel Dean of Cornell. Along the way, Thomusseit defeated 15th-ranked Ben Stroh of Wyoming (7-4) and third-ranked Nathaniel Brown
of Lehigh (3-1).
Hartmann won three of four matches at 197
pounds to finish second at the Southern Scuffle
in Chattanooga. He defeated 15th-ranked Eliott
Riddick of Lehigh in the semifinals before losing to the nation’s top-ranked wrestler, J’den
Cox of Missouri in the championship (6-1).

Forys, who wrestled at 125 pounds, defeated
Cody Karns of North Carolina by a fall at 4:22 of
their match, in leading the Panthers to a 21-15
win over the Tar Heels at the Pitt Duals in Pittsburgh, Pa., in Pitt’s first ACC win of the season.
Forys then defeated Thayer Atkins of Duke by
a major decision, 14-4 as the Panthers downed
the Blue Devils, 20-15 to take first place in the
ACC. Forys finished out his day last Sunday,
downing Tanner Shoap of Drexel by major decision, 10-2, as the Panthers recorded their third
dual match win of the weekend with a 27-12 victory over Drexel.
The trio of wins pushed his overall record for
the year to 11-2 and led the ninth-ranked Panthers to an overall 7-2 record as he accounted for
14 team points in the three matches.
Forys earned selection over a quartet of ACC
wrestlers in Duke’s Jake Faust (Belleville, Ohio),
NC State’s Joe DeAngelo (Burlington, N.C.),
North Carolina’s Chip Ness (Duluth, Ga.) and Virginia Tech’s Devin Carter (Christiansburg, Va.).
Faust captured three straight matches at 165
pounds including a win over 15th-ranked Max
Reiskopf of NC State in the Blue Devils’ dual
match win over the Wolfpack. Faust, a redshirt
sophomore, also downed Devan Murray of Eastern Michigan and Cody Wiercioch of Pitt.
DeAngelo won four straight matches at 125

Bloomsburg.
Ness, a freshman at 197 pounds, defeated
14th-ranked Nick Bonaccorsi of Pitt and Phil Sprenkle of Lock Haven.
Carter, a senior who was the 2013 NCAA
runner-up at 141 pounds captured four straight
matches in leading the sixth-ranked Hokies to the
championship of the Virginia Duals. Carter defeated Chance Driscoll of Kent State, Matt Krauss of
Arizona State, ninth-ranked Chris Mecante of Old
Dominion and Justin VanHoose of Virginia.
ACC Wrestler of the Week
January 20, 2015
Blaise Butler, Virginia
Virginia junior Blaise Butler (Belvidere, Ill.)
is the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the
Week after leading the Cavaliers to a 30-9 ACC
dual match win over Duke last Friday.
Butler pinned Duke’s Trey Adamson at the 2:00

Virginia, ranked 14th nationally this week, improved to 9-3 overall and 1-0 in the ACC.
Butler earned selection over Pitt senior Tyler
Wilps (Oakdale, Pa.), who recorded a major decision (17-8) over 18th-ranked Jordan Rogers of
Oklahoma State in the Panthers’ 25-13 loss to
the Cowboys in Stillwater, Ola. Wilps, ranked 8th
nationally at 174 pounds, improved his overall record to 8-2, including a 4-0 mark in dual matches.
ACC Wrestler of the Week
January 27, 2015
Tyler Wilps, Pitt
Pitt senior Tyler Wilps (Oakdale, Pa.) is the
Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week
after recording a win of Virginia’s 5th-ranked
Blaise Butler Sunday as the 10th-ranked Panthers
dropped a narrow, 17-16, decision to the 14 thranked Cavaliers in Charlottesville.
Wilps, ranked seventh nationally at 174 pounds,
scored a 6-2 win over Butler, recording two takedowns and allowing Butler to escape twice. The
win was Wilp’s second against a Top 20 opponent
in as many matches and also his first against a foe
ranked in the Top Five nationally.
Since returning to the lineup this winter, Wilps
is 9-2 overall and is unbeaten in dual matches
(5-0) and in ACC dual matches (3-0). He is 3-1
against opponents ranked in the Top 20 this year.
The one-point loss to Virginia was Pitt’s first
ACC dual match defeat, snapping an eight-match
winning streak since it began competing in the
league in 2013-14.
Wilps becomes the third Pitt wrestler to be honored as ACC Wrestler of the Week this season joining 184-pound Max Thomusseit on Dec. 16 and
125-pound Dom Forys on Jan. 13.
Wilps earned selection over North Carolina
freshman Ethan Ramos (Hawthorne, N.J.) who
defeated three opponents in the 165-pound weight

in leading the Tar Heels to wins over Navy, 25thranked Rider and George Mason; NC State junior
heavyweight Nick Gwiazdowski (Delanson, N.Y.)
who set an NC State school mark with his 42 consecutive wins in boosting his record to 20-0 on the
year with a pin of 30th-ranked Mimmo Lytle (4:43)
in a 26-13 win over Kent State; and Duke’s Trey
Adamson (Riverton, Utah), who recorded four individual wins in the 174 pound weight class in the
Appalachian State Open in Boone, N.C.
ACC Wrestler of the Week
February 3, 2015
Blaise Butler, Virginia
Virginia redshirt junior Blaise Butler (Belvidere,
IIl.) became the first Atlantic Coast Conference
wrestler to be named the ACC Wrestler of the
Week for the second time this season when he was
honored for his performance this past weekend.
Butler, ranked seventh nationally at 174 pounds,
scored a 3-2 win over Virginia Tech’s Zach Epperly
Sunday at the Moss Arts Center in Blacksburg, Va.
Epperly was ranked 12th nationally. Butler scored
a first period take down and never trailed in the win
in the opening bout of Sunday’s match.
Virginia, ranked 12th nationally, dropped a
close, 18-16 decision to the 9th-ranked Hokies.
Butler improved his record on the year to 15-2

ACC Wrestler of the Week
February 10, 2015
Ethan Ramos, North Carolina
North Carolina redshirt freshman Ethan Ramos
(Hawthorne, N.J.) was named the ACC Wrestler
of the Week for his upset of Virginia’s Nick Sulzer,
a key victory in the Tar Heels’ 17-16 upset win
over nationally 12th-ranked Virginia last Saturday
in Chapel Hill.
The ACC Wrestler of the Week honor is the first
in Ramos’ career.
Ranked 15th nationally at 165 pounds, Ramos
scored a dramatic sudden victory win over Sulzer, the nation’s No. 2-ranked grappler, providing
what proved to be the winning points for UNC.
The win for the Tar Heels was their first over the
Cavaliers since 2009.
Ramos scored a takedown in the first sudden
victory overtime session to secure a 6-4 decision.
The loss for Sulzer was only his second of the
year and his first in conference play since 2013.
Ramos improved his overall record to 24-6
and has won his last 10 bouts. Earlier this week,
he was named the Flowrestling national wrestler
of the week.
He was selected from among a group of three
nominees that also included NC State heavyweight Nick Gwiazdowski (Delanson, N.Y.), the
nation’s No. 1-ranked wrestler at 285 pounds,
who recorded a pair of falls last week against
27th-ranked Jacob Henderson of Old Dominion
and 7th-ranked Ty Walz of Virginia Tech; and Pitt
sophomore Mikey Racciato (Pen Argyl, Pa.), who
also scored a pair of falls for the Panthers against
Brent Waterman of Virginia Tech and Brodie
Zacherf of Clarion.
