Millwright Apprenticeships
Operating Engineer Apprenticeships
Millwrights are skilled construction mechanics who interpret
blueprints and then put their knowledge and expertise to work
drilling, welding, and bolting in order to achieve a perfect fit.
Millwrights sometimes work to specifications requiring tolerances to one thousandth of an inch.
An operating engineer operates construction equipment that
assists other tradesman in the construction of roads, bridges,
dams, both large and small buildings, and many other structures.
Millwrights install conveyer systems, escalators, giant electrical
turbines and generators. They also install and do maintenance
on machinery in factories and do much of the precision work in
nuclear power plants.
If you are interested in working with machinery and precision
measurement, you may want to become a Millwright.
You must:
Be at least 17 years of age
Possess a high school diploma or GED Certificate
Be physically able to handle the demands of the trade
How do I prepare for the trade?
It will be helpful to have completed courses in or possess the
following skills:
Mechanical drawing
Metal or industrial shop
General math courses
Blueprint reading
Welding
What are the program specifics?
The work of an operating engineer is divided into two general classifications:
Operating Equipment - Used in construction such as dozers,
graders, backhoes and cranes.
Repairing and Earth Moving Equipment - Used in the building
of roads, bridges, dams and large buildings.
You must:
Be at least 18 years of age by May 1st in the year you apply
Possess a high school diploma or GED Certificate
Have a valid driver's license and be capable of passing the
Commercial Drivers License (CDL) test
Have dependable transportation
Be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions
Pass a drug test
How do I prepare for the trade?
It will be helpful to have completed courses in or possess the
following skills:
Good math skills
Good reading ability
Blueprint reading
Mechanical ability
Welding
Length of program is 4 years
4 weeks of related classroom instruction each year (160 hours)
Annual "OJT" requirement is 1200 hours
Applications are taken 2 weeks out of the year
Starting pay is approximately 60% of scale
What are the program specifics?
Length of the program is 4 years
Probationary period is 450 hours
Minimum of 160 hours of classroom training each year
Starting pay is 50% of journeyman wage

1st Monday of each month. This class is held from 8:00
a.m. to 12:00 noon. It covers Internet job searching,

and information, Creating a portfolio about your work
history, training and achievements. Attendees should
bring a copy of their resume’ or job history information
as a portion of this workshop will be hands-on for the

Basic Computer Literacy classes:
This class runs 5 weeks and is held on Friday
mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
HB2 & Ohio Means Jobs Workshop:
This workshop reviews the new Ohio Means Jobs website and covers the new unemployment requirements
from the passing of House Bill 2. Individual assistance
with completing steps on-line on the computer will be
available during this session. Every Friday from 1:00
p.m.—2:00 p.m.
OLE—Ohio Earn to Learn:
The 3rd Wednesday of each month. This workshop reviews the OLE-Ohio Learn to Earn program. It is designed for Employers and Employees.
