Course Description:
Rehabilitation of the edentulous anterior maxilla using dental implants is a
challenging process. Treatment planning has to account for numerous variables including the amount
of hard and soft tissues lost, periodontal condition, occlusion, esthetics, and patient expectations.
Meticulous surgical and restorative techniques should be followed. Additionally, supporting the patient
psychologically during the process is paramount. In this talk, we will discuss a clinical case that will
shed light on the important aspects of evaluating and managing patients with an edentulous anterior
maxilla using dental implants.

2014 EXPLORASMILE
Thank you Sponsors and Volunteers!!!
The Blue Grass Dental Society hosted another successful ExplorAsmilE event thanks to the sponsors and many volunteers that came
out and supported the program this year. During the week of February 17-21, 2014, we were able to screen approximately 1,500 children
from the 27-county BGDS area. They also rotated through a toothpaste making station, learned about dental hygiene and good dental
nutrition, watched a dental puppet show, learned about water fluoridation, made tooth fairy boxes and still had some time left over to
play in the museum. We not only rely on financial support each year, but much of the success of the program depends solely on the
volunteers. We would like to recognize and thank of them:

A Message from Our President:
Dear BGDS Members,
As I write this month’s President’s letter, I am sitting in the Hyatt Hotel in Louisville at the KDA Meeting. This is a busy meeting
with outstanding continuing education activity. Dr. Bertolatti’s all day course on bonding and composites was terrific and raised
about $15,000 for charity dentistry. The money will be donated to the Kentucky Dental Foundation for this purpose. As a member
of the board of the Kentucky Dental Foundation, I can tell you that our meeting this year was very upbeat!
I just came out of a board meeting from the KD-PAC. We are finally gathering steam among KDA Members as we realize that
access to elected officials simply to present our issues is much more likely to occur when the KD-PAC has made a contribution to
that person’s campaign. Currently, the issues we are having with Medicaid are highly significant and it is imperative that we open
a dialogue with our legislators. As our representative to the KDA Executive Board, Dr. Bill Lee, reported at our March 10 th
business meeting, the KDA has appointed a Think Tank Group consisting of Drs. Fred Howard, Garth Bobrowski, Raynor
Mullins and Lee Mayer. This is a great example of how organized dentistry works for its members. Please consider making a
contribution to the KD-PAC so that we can access our elected representative to help them understand our concerns.
The KDA is focusing on two MAJOR issues this coming year- MEMBERSHIP and ADVOCACY. The previous paragraph deals
with advocacy and this one will address membership. It was terrific to see so many senior students from UK at our March
meeting. These young people are the future of our profession and we need to continue reaching out to them. Our society has seen
a decline in numbers this past year as have the ADA and the KDA. Organized dentistry used to boast that 80% or more of the
dentists in the US were members of ADA, but unfortunately, that number is now about 50%. This is why the BGDS has decided
to sponsor Dr. Donna Meek to attend the annual ADA Membership Recruitment and Retention Meeting. Donna has also agreed to
resurrect the too long dormant BGDS New Members Committee. All of you can help- invite those who are not members to join
you at a meeting. Volunteer to serve on a committee! There are lots of ways to get involved.
Our service project at the Children’s Museum was a huge success. We screened over 1300 children and raised slightly more
money than the cost of the event. The extra money will be retained to use for next year’s event. Thanks to all of you who
contributed your time or money to make this such a success and thanks to our Executive Director, Denise for getting it all
organized.
See you at our all day CE course on April 18!
Sharon
