Dr. Jeffrey P. Okeson, DMD
presents,
“TMD: A Diagnostic Challenge”
Malone’s Banquet Facility
3347 Tates Creek Rd., Lexington, KY
Registration: 6:30 p.m. Dinner: 7:00 p.m. Lecture: 7:45 p.m.
Course Description:
Temporomandibular disorders are common in the general population and therefore the clinician needs
to be able to proper diagnosis these conditions. Pain however is complex and much confusion can
arise. The purpose of this presentation is present a simple and logical method to separator TMD from
other orofacial pain disorders so that the clinician can properly select those patients who can be helped
in the dental office from those who should be referred to other health care providers.
Speaker Bio:
Dr. Okeson is Professor, Chairman of the Department of Oral Health Science at the University of
Kentucky and Director of the College's Orofacial Pain Center, which he established in 1977. He has
authored three textbooks on TM disorders and orofacial pain that are presently used in most US dental
schools and have been translated into eleven different languages. He has also published more than
220 articles and chapters. Dr. Okeson is a very sought after lecturer on the subject of TMD and
orofacial pain and has presented more than 1000 invited lectures on the subject of TMD and orofacial
pain in all 50 states and in 51 different countries. He has received the campus wide University of
Kentucky “Great Teacher Award”, the Provost’s Distinguished Service Professorship, the American
Academy of Orofacial Pain’s Service Award and the first ever “Distinguished Alumni Award” from the
College of Dentistry. Dr. Okeson has also received “The International Dentist of the Year Award” from
the Academy of Dentistry International. This is the highest award recognized by this Academy
and was given to him in recognition of his worldwide efforts in providing education in the area of
temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain.

BLUE GRASS DENTAL SOCIETY
A Message From Our President,
Greetings from Seattle, Kentucky! As I write this message in the beginning of December, it is raining and
close to 60 degrees. I am definitely not complaining, having spent two winters in Cleveland, but it just seems strange.
And you know what they say- if you don’t like Kentucky weather then just stick around for a day or two. So through
rain, sleet, or snow the Bluegrass Dental Society marches on with members and service in mind.
We had a great fall schedule that was attended by many and enjoyed by all. Our winter dinner meetings
should be crowd pleasers as well. On January 10th, Dr. Okeson will discuss TMD, followed by a February 7th presentation by Dr. Allweiss on diabetes, and we will end the winter line-up on March 13th with Dr. Colin speaking about
sleep apnea. It is a wide-range of topics that hopefully will appeal to all so that we can continue to increase attendance
and fellowship at the monthly meetings. Please plan on attending as many as your schedule allows.
Also February 20-24, we will be celebrating Children’s Dental Health Month through the Explore-A-Smile
event at the Children’s Museum in Lexington. If you have time to volunteer that week please contact Denise, we can
always use the help. If time is a problem then please consider a monetary donation to the BGDS to help offset the cost
it takes to run the event. Every dollar counts and I thank you in advance for your donations.
I hope everyone has a great holiday season and that you are able to take some time off to enjoy with family
and friends. We will see in January and until then keep fighting the good fight by saving the world one tooth at a
time!
Clifford J. Lowdenback, DMD
