residents to raise nearly
$300,000 to promote mental
health programs at The
Mental Health Association of
Westchester’s (MHA’s) “MHA
on the move: Run, Walk,
Dance!” held on Saturday,
September 20, 2008. The day
began with the agency’s fourth
annual 5K Run/Walk and 1
Mile Kids’ Race, at FDR State
Park in Yorktown Heights and
culminated with a Gala Dance
Celebration that evening. All
proceeds from the events
will support MHA’s advocacy,
education and direct services.
“Both of these great events are
about addressing the stigma
of mental illness that prevent
people from getting help early,” says Dr. Amy Kohn, MHA’s
CEO and Executive Director.
“People living with psychiatric
disabilities and those who
have experienced trauma can
recover with dignity when they
receive the help they need.”
“This is an amazing community event that brings people
together to raise awareness”
adds Dr. Kohn. “Mental illness
and emotional disturbance
touches all of us and the stigma associated with seeking
help can be devastating.”

19 minutes and 50 seconds.

Celebrates 3rd Anniversary

On July 17, 2008 MHA’s Director of Development & Communications, Caroline T. Turner
joined Mary Wilson of the infamous 60’s Motown Group, The Supremes, to help Connie’s
Bakery in Mount Kisco, celebrate its 3rd Anniversary. Wilson is the spokeswoman for the
Humpty Dumpty Institute, an organization that pairs public and private entities to work on
worldwide humanitarian issues, such as hunger and landmine removal. Humpty Dumpty
was founded by Constance Milstein, an attorney and member of a prominent New York
Real Estate family who opened Connie’s Bakery and General Store in February of 2005, and
donates all of the bakery’s profits to charities.
Foundation Sweet Success, the giving vehicle created by Connie’s Bakery and General Store
has long been a supportive partner to MHA. Each year, six non-profit organizations from Westchester County and the Hudson Valley
are selected as Connie’s charitable partners, and funds in the foundation are divided equally among them. MHA was a recipient of
these funds in 2006.
Milstein is quoted in the Journal News as saying that she is glad to be able to make a difference. “I think that doing good is the
reason that we are put on this Earth,” she said. “The more good we do, the better the world will be.”

and Donna Renella, the newest members of MHA’s Board of Directors.

Ms. Consilvio, a resident of
Croton, NY most recently
served as the Executive
Director of both the Kirby
Forensic Psychiatric Hospital
and the Manhattan Psychiatric
Hospital. In this capacity, she
was responsible for managing
both State Psychiatric Centers
with a combined census of
520 patients. In addition, she
was responsible for staffing
levels, overtime management,
hospital budgets, census
targets and several construction projects including a new
Transitional Residence. Ms.
Consilvio earned her Bachelor
of Science from Pace University, her Master of Science in
Health Administration from
Long Island University, and
her Nursing Degree from
the Mount Sinai School of
Nursing.
Ms. Contract, a resident
of Ardsley, NY, is currently
the Director of Financial
Services at New York Presbyterian Hospital’s Westchester
Division and Payne Whitney
Manhattan campus. Here
she oversees the financial
management of the dualcampus behavioral health
division, including a 276-bed,
stand-alone facility and 64
beds on the main campus.
She received her Master of
Business Administration
from the Wharton School of
Business at the University of
Pennsylvania, and earned her
undergraduate degree from
Cornell University.

Crossroads Recognition Breakfast
On Friday, May 2, 2008, MHA’s Crossroads program held
its 8th annual Recognition Breakfast, honoring professionals in the community who have gone above and beyond
their required job responsibilities in order to make a
difference in the lives of the young adults they serve.

Sterling Club Members
Receive White Belts
On June 18, 2008 ten Sterling Club members
were honored for completing a 16-week Tae
Kwon Do program at B.M. Kim’s Tae Kwon Do
of White Plains. In order to formally achieve
their Tae Kwon Do belts, the members had to
successfully pass a rigorous test, after which
they were presented with white belts as well
as trophies and certificates.
“We now have people who are in better shape
and are starting to think about what it means
to focus and how to do push ups and sit ups.
Everyone had a great time, and there is talk
about doing it all again in September,” says
Ray Pena, Transportation Facilitator for the
Clubhouse.
This year’s honorees included Danielle Lucas of St.
Joseph’s Medical Center, Betty Lahmann of Human
Development Services of Westchester, Quinn Rathjen of
MHA of Westchester’s Functional Family Therapy program,
Thomas Miller of Westchester Jewish Community Services’ Center Lane program, Dr. Tom Byrne of BOCES and
Betty Mutschler of Family Ties of Westchester. Honorees
and their supervisors enjoyed breakfast and an awards
ceremony in which Crossroads staff spoke about each
recipient’s contributions.
Volunteer Recognition Luncheon
On June 12, 2008, MHA held its annual
Volunteer Recognition Luncheon in
honor of all the volunteers who give of
their time to MHA’s programs. Over
100 volunteers gathered on a sunny,
spring day at Crabtree’s Kittle House
in Chappaqua, NY for a celebratory
lunch. Volunteers were present from
all aspects of MHA: CASA, Mentoring,
Family and Abuse Court Services,
Long-Term Care Ombudsman who celebrated their 30th year, Quality Assurance
and the Sterling Club.
Dr. Amy Kohn, CEO and Executive Director of MHA, welcomed everyone and
thanked them for their commitment to MHA, donation of time and all of the wonderful work they do. Dr. Kohn expressed her extreme gratitude and articulated
that without volunteers, MHA’s programs would not be able to exist or sustain
themselves. The guest speaker was Joanna Straub, Executive Director of The
Volunteer Center of United Way, who spoke about the personal gratification and
subsequent health benefits for people who volunteer.
The Volunteer Recognition Luncheon was a wonderful opportunity for MHA’s volunteers to gather and meet, some for the very first time. Volunteers spoke about
why they give of their time to MHA and what it means to them. Each volunteer
received a small token of thanks.
