About the speaker: Kristy Menage Bernie, RDH, BS, RYT
Kristy Menage Bernie, RDH, BS, RYT, a graduate of the University of Maryland,
is the Director of Educational Designs, is celebrating her 30th year in dental hygiene by going back to school! She is enrolled in the Masters Dental Hygiene
program at UCSF, where she is also an Assistant Clinical Professor. Kristy, an
international speaker, has served on editorial boards for state and national publications for the past 20 years, and authored a chapter in the latest edition of Mosby’s Dental Hygiene textbook on oral malodor. She has been quoted in Esquire
Magazine, Women's Health Magazine, interviewed by ESPN Radio and featured
on the December, 2011 issue of RDH Magazine.

About the speaker: Dr. Howard Taras, MD
Howard Taras, MD was born in Montreal, received his medical degree at McMaster University and completed his residency in Pediatrics at University of Toronto –
both universities located in the province of Ontario, Canada. He has been a professor of pediatrics at University of California, San Diego for 29 years. At UCSD
he directs the Community Engagement division of UCSD’s Clinical & Translational Research Institute and has directed the UCSD Contract for “Share the Care
Dental Health Initiative”, with the County health department for almost 10 years.
In these roles, he is responsible for improving the appreciation for health-related
research among members of the general public and clinicians, and encouraging
researchers to include community members and clinicians’ input into what they study and how they
do it. He works with a team of very competent and committed dental hygienists to promote oral
health in San Diego County.
During each General Meeting and Saturday seminar, we will be collecting donated toiletries. If you have any of these items lying around
the house, your donations would be greatly appreciated! These
items will be collected and distributed to the women’s shelter .

President’s Message
Happy New Year and welcome to our upcoming 2015 season. The first month of January is already passed, with completion of our annual CA Law/infection Control Continuing Education Event. Our speaker Tricia Osuna, RDH, started the year strong, and we
intend to continue forward with a great list of speakers for our members.
This February we will be having Kristy Menage-Bernie as our speaker for the yearly
“student night” event we hold to honor senior hygiene students. We anticipate a nice
turnout as we now have 3 dental hygiene schools in San Diego.
In addition to “Student Night,” we also will be holding the HOD election. We will be voting in our valuable
delegates who will be representing San Diego at the annual House of Delegates. If you were unable to
submit your bio to the Bulletin, nominations will be taken from the floor. This years House of Delegates
will be held here in San Diego for those who are inspired to attend the event as a guest spectator.
In March we will be taking nominations and seeking a new Executive Board to run our Component.
Incoming President, Brad Cushman, is actively seeking volunteers who feel passionate about the
profession and are willing to put in their time.
Finally, I would like to comment on the loss of one of our valuable members, Diana Corley. Diana Corley
held every office possible on the board, and was a constant presence at the House of Delegates. Diana
not only held offices at the local level, but was active at our state level holding positions in CDHA. Her
family was also supportive, often offering their home for meetings and party events to our members and
hygiene students. Diana will very much be missed.

2015 CDHA House of Delegates Nominations
The 2015 CDHA House of Delegates will be held May 29th - 31st at the Harrah’s Rincon Southern
California Resort. All delegates must be in good standing with the ADHA, CDHA, and SDCDHS. Delegates
will be required to:
 Perform duties in common
 Attend pre-HOD caucus
 Attend all meetings of the CDHA HOD
 Submit expense vouchers to the Treasurer
 Attend board meeting(s), if possible
 Represent the interests of the component members
A vote for HOD delegates will be held at the February 24th General Meeting. No previous experience is
required, only a willingness to join the team and make a difference is needed!

Jeri Badour
If you want to know what direction your career is heading, then you need to sit in the driver’s seat. That’s why
I’m asking for your vote to elect me as a delegate to represent SDCDHS at CDHA’s House of
Delegates this May. I learned as far back as a student ADHA member that being active in my
Association would help direct my career in Dental Hygiene. My active membership and Dental
Hygiene leadership roles started with me being elected as my Senior Dental Hygiene Class
Vice-President to serving as SDCDHS’s President - 3 terms, Trustee - 2 terms, Alternate Trustee - 1 term, Historian - 16 terms, HOD Delegate 15 terms. I’m proud of all that our Association
does to keep our careers safeguarded, relevant, and progressive. I feel I have the experience
and foresight to be an effective delegate and would like the honor to serve as one of SDCDHS’
HOD delegates. Thank you for your vote.

Brad Cushman
Hello, I would like to take a minute to say how grateful I am to be a part of SDCDHS. I was not
very politically minded before I began dental hygiene school, but something happened once I
became involved in my new career, I became passionate about where I was heading in this
field and what it meant to be part of something that is growing in greatness. Last year I had the
honor of being a delegate for HOD and was captivated by the excitement of being involved,
adding my voice to those of many experienced hygienists from our component, and I would
love to be a part of it again if so allowed. Thank you for your consideration.
Stephanie Johnson
My name is Stephanie Johnson, and I would be honored to be able to represent SDCDHS at
the State House. I became a hygienist in 2013 after graduating from Concorde Career College of San Diego. I am currently working full time in two private practices, and have been
active in our local component since graduation. I was fortunate enough to have been an HOD
delegate at last years session, and with your vote, would be thrilled to represent San Diego
again. I am extremely passionate about our profession, and believe that it is important to be a
voting delegate to ensure that dental hygiene is moving forward in the positive direction that it
deserves. Thank you for your consideration.
Marilyn Jacobson
I graduated from the University of Iowa in 1956 and have been a member of ADHA for over 45
years. In the past I have served as SDCDHS President, Vice President, Program Chair, Ways
and Means, and Circulation Chair. I have also been a delegate to CDHA HOD many times.
Currently I am the SDCDHS liaison to the San Diego Dental Health Coalition and serve as Parliamentarian. I am also the Hostess Chairman for HOD this year. I have represented SDCDHS
on the KPBS First 5 Commission and California Fluoridation Task Force and currently serve as
Children’s Dental Health Advisory Council Chair. It would be an honor to be elected and once
again serve our component as a delegate to the CDHA 2012 House of Delegates.
Sharon Kropp
I would be honored to be a member of the SDCDHS delegation to CDHA HOD. I work in private practice and as adjunct faculty at Southwestern College Dental Hygiene Program. Having
been faculty advisor for SADHA, I continue to mentor our future members. For multiple years, I
have been an officer and delegate. By attending state, national, and international dental hygiene meetings, I stay informed of professional trends and would be an informed delegate. I
ask for your vote for SDCDHS delegate.

Krystlelyn Mendoza Paras
I am Krystlelyn Mendoza Paras, RDH, and it would be a privilege to represent San Diego as a
delegate at this year’s CDHA House of Delegates. I recently graduated from Southwestern
College’s dental hygiene program in May 2014. Currently I am working part-time as a clinical
hygienist in a private practice. I am also an active member in our Dental Hygiene profession
by serving the SDCDHS as Community Service Chair, Hospitality Chair, and Student Relations Chair. In addition, I held the position of being the ADHA student representative for SWC
from 2012 – 2014 and attended the California House of Delegates (HOD) both years. During
the 1st year I learned how HOD functions, and during the 2nd I held the position of HOD teller.
This year I would love to receive your vote and have another opportunity to be a part of this influential process of
making a difference in our professional organization.
Sneha Patel
My name is Sneha Patel and I would be honored to serve as a delegate at the 2014 House of
Delegates. I currently work full-time clinically, am a member of Sigma Phi Alpha honor society,
and serve as the SDCDHS Editor. I am passionate about not only being a clinical hygienist, but
also a proud member of our San Diego component. I am extremely excited to have a hand in
ensuring that our organization and profession never stop moving forward. Thank you for your

Ashley Quezada
Hi there, my name is Ashley Quezada and this year I am making the step to run for delegate. I
was a dental assistant for seven years and wanted to offer more to my patients so I furthered
my education. I attended Concorde Career College in San Diego where I received my associates in Dental Hygiene and also acted as the SAHDA rep for my class. I was also chosen to
be the only student from my class to attend last year’s House of Delegates as a voting student
delegate. Since receiving my license I have volunteered my time as Registration Chair and Co
-Membership Chair for the San Diego County Dental Hygienists Society. I may be young to
the hygiene profession, but I have huge goals and aspirations for the future of our profession.
I also believe that my 4 years of active duty military expireince provides me with a strong
voice to move forward and stand up for the changes and growth we would like to see in our
profession. If you vote for me, I promise to represent all California hygienists with strength, dignity, respect, and

NOMINATIONS FOR THE 2015-2016 SDCDHS EXECUTIVE BOARD
"Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of the party,”
is a practice sentence for typing invented by a teacher named Charles E. Weller.
Putting my own flair to it, “Now is the time for all good men and women to come to the
aid of the San Diego County Dental Hygienists’ Society.” President-Elect Brad Cushman has
begun seeking candidates to hold Executive Board positions for his 2015-2016 term in office.
Brad has been serving as Ways & Means Chairperson for the past two years. He is dedicated,
passionate, and excited about undertaking a new role as President of SDCDHS. He can’t,
however, do it on his own, and is looking for a handful of hygienists who would like to continue
shaping the future of our component.
If you have leadership qualities and would like to put them to good use, this is the place for
you. No previous experience necessary to fill each role, as you will have mentors now in these
positions to transfer their skills and knowledge to you.
President-Elect: a term of one year. Assists the President in all ways in preparation of the
Presidency. In the absence of the President may be assigned to attend official functions
and serve on any committees as needed.
VP/Professional Development: a term of one year. Facilitates all continuing education programs for the year, negotiating contracts with potential speakers, venues, and caterers as necessary.
Recording Secretary: a term of one year. Prepares the minutes for the Executive Board and
General Meetings.
Treasurer: a term of two years. Is the custodian for all monies belonging to this Society, and
pays all bills as directed by the Executive Board.
Trustee: a term of two years. Attends CDHA Board of Trustee meetings as the representative
of this component.
Alternative Trustee: a term of one year. Attends 1-day CDHA Board of Trustee meetings
held in the Southern California and assumes the duties of the Trustee in the Trustee’s absence.

A Tribute to Diana Corley RDH BS

It’s with great sadness to announce that one of our esteemed
SDCDHS colleagues, Diana Corley, RDH BS, died on Sun.,
Jan. 18, 2015. No member has given as much of their time or
talents as Diana did since she joined SDCDHS in 1992. Diana
has held every Executive Board, Appointed Officer and Committee Chair position in our component, a fete that no other
member has achieved or probably will achieve. In addition
she’s held Committee positions in CDHA. Diana was also
elected to serve as an ADHA delegate but had to resign that
position due to her cancer. She was relentless in her determination to make SDCDHS a shining example to our Association
and one in which our members could be proud of. She was a
role model to all who have followed in serving SDCDHS and a
pioneer in establishing most of the policies and programs that
SDCDHS uses today.
Diana graduated from Wichita State University in Kansas and
has been Drs. Cassat, Rhoades and Liberto’s RDH for over 20
years. It was in this office where she met Stacie Newbill,
RDH, past SDCDHS President, and how her involvement in
SDCDHS started. Stacie asked Diana to assist the current
Membership Chair with converting the 3x5 membership index
cards to computer files. Diana’s computer proficiency and organizational skills lead her to modernize all the components’
files onto the computer. Our Bulletin, Budget, By-laws,
Scopes, & Policies, Leadership Duty Folders, Membership
Roster, CE Tri-folds, Component Logo, and Website are just a
few of the tools our Component uses daily that Diana either revamped or designed for us.
Diana’s talents knew no bounds.
As our Bulletin Editor, she made our Bulletin legendary in
CDHA and in recent years she worked with Druann Andrecht,
RDH (editor from 2004-2012 and Past President) to go “green”
and cost-saving by posting it on-line and emailing to our members, which made one of the positions she held, Bulletin Circulation Chair, obsolete. Diana and her family had over the
years spent countless hours folding, stapling and sorting the
Bulletin to ready it for mailing. Diana designed, produced, obtained corporate sponsors and mailed the SDCDHS Roster for
members.
As our Treasurer, she computerized and streamlined our files
and presented a balanced Budget that allowed the component
to meet its financial goals.
As a member, Diana volunteered wherever there was a need.
She most notably had a hand in designing our President and
member’s pins, the Board Installation decorations, worked closely with Marilyn Jacobson, RDH BS (Past President) on the 75th
SDCDHS Anniversary decorations and commemorative pin, and
our initial Website. She was proud to be a part of the Komen
One Day Breast Cancer Walk’s “Chicks with Picks” team captained by Judy Peacock, RDH BS.
As our Hospitality Chair, she designed beautiful centerpieces for
our Dinner Meetings, and established “Table Buddies” to help
new members feel welcomed.
As our Ways & Means Chair, she was a successful and creative
fundraiser.
As our liaison to The Children’s Dental Health Association, Diana
represented us well, by serving as an active Board member for
years and helping with the “Day of the Races” and Gala fundraisers.
As our Community Health Chair, she designed and made three
Community Health Displays which our members use at Health
Fairs and School Presentations. Diana decided our Component
needed Tooth Fairy costumes for our members to use for community events and she commissioned Danice Dean, RDH MS, to
make us two costumes that were made so that one size would fit
all potential Tooth Fairies. Our community outreach programs of
distributing Smile Boxes to Foster children, personal hygiene
bags to Women’s Shelters and Senior Smile kits to Meals-onWheels were Diana’s ideas that have benefitted the less fortunate and helped spread SDCDHS’ name out into the community.
She annually organized RDH & student volunteers to help at the
Sealant/Varnish Clinics and Women’s Resource Fair. Diana secured, organized and maintained our Component’s storage unit,
which houses all our supplies.
As our Student Relations Chair, she established our liaison relationship when Southwestern College’s Dental Hygiene School
opened. She started a member-to-student mentor program and
hosted many “Welcome Student Luaus” in her parent’s backyard.
She was instrumental in having our component donate a flatscreen TV to Southwestern College’s Dental Hygiene Clinics’
patient-waiting room, with a nameplate recognizing SDCDHS’
donation. She encouraged the component to invite the Senior
Dental Hygiene class as our guests for a Student Night, and to
have the SADHA student class representatives attend our General meetings at no cost. Southwestern DH Sr. students received National Board goody bags that she made and received
roses at their Pinning Ceremony. She started a SDCDHS student scholarship and carpooled students to the CDHA SADHA
Regional Meeting. Diana knew our DH students were our future
and she was their greatest supporter.
As our Corporate Relations Chair, Diana increased corporate involvement at our meetings and developed the templates and forms for communicating to Corporations to be exhibitors or to request product donations.
As our Trustee, she kept the Component well informed on Association
issues. She organized the HOD delegates by providing informational delegate’s folders at the HOD Caucus. Shopped & prepared the food for
the HOD Caucus meetings, which were held at her parent’s home.
Shopped for and beautifully displayed our Component’s CDHA HOD Silent Auction donations. Twice when SDCDHS had to host the CDHA
HOD, Diana organized the best Hospitality Suite and delegate goody
bags that CDHA Delegates had ever seen. She implemented and designed our “Outstanding Component Member” award. Diana & her committee spent hours aligning our By-laws, Scopes & Financial Policies with
CDHA and ADHA.
As our Secretary, the Board meeting minutes were concise and properly
prepared. Again using her computer skills she developed the format for
taking minutes that SDCDHS secretaries used for many years. Diana
volunteered her parent’s home for our Board meetings for the terms of
many SDCDHS Presidents.
As our Vice President of Professional Development, Diana established
the Speakers’ contracts and Appreciation Certificates. Researched and
consulted the Board on electronic equipment we needed for our CE
courses and most importantly she knew how all that equipment worked.
As our President in 2002 and 2003, Diana was, as Lisa Petty, RDH BS,
said, “a leader with relentless determination and tireless commitment that
inspired all of us to do more and do it better; without raising her voice or
speaking harshly to anyone as she navigated to new territories that others were afraid to touch”. She led with a smile and was instrumental in
mentoring the fine leaders SDCDHS has today.
Behind every great leader is an understanding and supportive family and
we want to thank her late husband, Jim, her son, Jeremy and her parents, Brigadier General and Mrs. Cardenas for sharing Diana with us and
for all the time and resources they volunteered over the 20 years of Diana’s involvement in SDCDHS. That is why CDHA recognizes our
“outstanding” members with a special award and why Diana Corley received the “Outstanding Component Member” award in 1996. We are
indebted to Diana for all the willing service she gave our Component and
State Associations. Please honor Diana by making a donation in her

Health Day for the Uninsured
On Sunday, January 25th 2015, the San Diego County Dental Hygiene Society volunteered at Tzu
Chi’s Family Health Day for the Uninsured event held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Fallbrook,
CA. This event provided a variety of free health services to low-income and uninsured individuals,
with a focus on the health care for adults. Both medical and dental services were provided, including
simple extractions and fillings, acupuncture, blood pressure readings, blood sugar testing, flu vaccination and vision services. SDCDHS’s President, Darcie Bell, RDH, BS and Community Chair,
Krystlelyn Paras, RDH participated in this event by providing dental cleanings and oral health education to many patients. Student volunteers from Southwestern College were also in attendance to
participate and assisted the hygienists.Thank you to everyone who participated. You did an amazing
job and really helped to make this event a success.

Upcoming Community Outreach Event: GIVE KIDS A SMILE
Help “Give Kids A Smile” on Saturday, February 28th from 9AM – 12PM! Volunteers are needed to provide sealants and fluoride varnish to underprivileged kids in the San Diego County. The American Dental
Association along with First 5 San Diego and Share the Care, have put together this event to provide oral
health screenings, treatment and education to children in our community. This event will be held at 6 different locations around San Diego County, including Vista, Ramona, Chula Vista, Escondido, Spring Valley, and Golden Hill. It is imperative for the success to Give Kids a Smile to have volunteer dentists, hygienists and assistants participate and make this possible.
Volunteers are needed from 8AM – 1PM on Saturday, February 28th, 2015. Dentist and hygienist volunteers will need to have proof of liability/malpractice insurance. If you or someone you know is interested in
participating please contact Lourdes Valdez from the San Diego County Dental Society via phone (619)

Remember wonderful volunteers are always an important asset at these community events to make it
possible to provide the much-needed health services in the community and address public health issues. We hope you will volunteer your time to help give kids a smile!

SDCDHS Visits Concorde College
Concorde College Senior Dental Hygiene Students welcomed a visit from SDCDHS member,
Jeri Badour, RDH BS, on Tuesday, January 20th, 2015. She was asked by Professor Miriam De
La Roi, MDH, RDHAP, to speak to the students about becoming members of ADHA. Jeri gave a
brief overview about our tripartite organization; highlighted some of the achievements CDHA
has had over the years; explained the benefits of membership; and what it means to be a student ADHA member. Each student was given a
dental themed Post-It pad and a note on how to
access our Component Website.
