A study by Macquarie University found AFL fans were hit with an average of 10 minutes and 50 seconds of gambling advertising per match, with sports betting displayed an average of 93 times. Last year’s Grand Final between Hawthorn and Fremantle featured more than 12 minutes of gambling advertising, the study found, with 114 “incidents” of bet promotion. Coverage of a Round 23 match between St. Kilda and Fremantle contained more than 21 minutes of gambling advertising and 186 individual references, it found. The Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation, which funded the study, is concerned the trend is fuelling dangerous betting habits, especially among men aged 18-25. “The prominence of sports betting in our sporting culture has been propelled by persuasive and consistent marketing urging us to bet at every opportunity,” said foundation chief Serge Sardo. NRL had even higher penetration of betting adverts during live matches, an average of 14 per cent of screen time. “Herald Sun”, Wed. Feb. 4 Well, the start of the footy season is just a few weeks away. And some of us can’t wait to have a bet on who is going to be the first player to kick the ball the wrong way, or who will give away the first free kick, or who will kick the third goal in the last quarter, or who …. The report from Macquarie University indicating the saturation of (AFL) gambling advertising on TV will come as no surprise. When the study tells us that one match carried 21 minutes of gambling advertising - more than one quarter of playing time then we must know we have a problem. Former Melbourne star, David Schwarz played 173 games for the Demons, and nearly ruined his life with a gambling addiction. Accordingly his view on the explosion of gambling in football is worthy of note. Talking to sports journalist Mike Sheahan in 2013, he said: “I believe the AFL is drunk on the revenue they receive from gambling agencies and until that goes, we’re in trouble.” he said. Schwarz was reported to have gambled up to a quarter of a million dollars each weekend at the peak of his addiction. He believes the issue of sports gambling, and AFL in particular, is a major issue for our society. “My biggest issue at the moment is these corporate bookmakers are grooming kids into gambling. People will say, “Well how is that happening?” “When my eight-year-old says ‘Richmond are favourites because they are $1.63,’ we’ve got issues. He should know they’re favourites because Jack Riewoldt is a good full forward and Trent Cotchin’s a great midfielder and they’re up against Brisbane who have had their real battles travelling to Melbourne.” There is ample evidence as to the damage caused in so many homes and families through excessive gambling. As to its power to corrupt sport, well maybe that’s always been a possibility. But the enormous saturation of gambling advertising must be generating more betting, and the more betting, the higher the likelihood of corruption. If the ads weren’t “working”, they would be curtailed or dropped altogether. Let’s enjoy this year’s footy, by all means. But the raw truth of the Macquarie study will be evident as soon as Round 1 begins. Gambling used not be a necessary component of football. It need not be now. Sadly, any change might be impossible the “genie” is well out of the bottle. THANK YOU: Eric Isulat and family (from Lara) wish to thank Fr. QUOTE OF THE WEEK: “We’ve made great medical progress in the last generation. What used to be merely an itch is now an allergy.” - ANONYMOUS THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: Forgiving is love’s toughest work, and love’s biggest risk. If you twist it into something it was never meant to be, it can make you a doormat or an insufferable manipulator. Forgiving seems almost unnatural. Our sense of fairness tells us people should pay for the wrong they do. But forgiving is love’s power to break nature’s rule. ~ LEWIS B.
