HEALING MINISTRY
During Jesus’ ministry “he cured many who were sick
with various diseases, and he drove out many demons.” This is the case in today’s Gospel. Jesus fulfills
the vision of Psalm 147: “He heals the brokenhearted
and binds up their wounds.” Jesus knew, however, that
he couldn’t possibly heal all the illness in the world. No
matter how many people he cured or how many hours
he ministered, there always would be more suffering
people like Job who craved his healing touch. His primary mission was not to rid the world of all suffering.
His “purpose” was to preach the coming of the reign of
God that heals, yes, but ultimately transcends and
transforms earthly suffering. With Paul, Jesus could
have said, “Woe to me if I do not preach” that good
news.

PASTOR’S CORNER
This Sunday, we are recognizing and honoring those
couples celebrating 25, 40, 50 & 60 years of marriage. I
would make this column a tribute to all married couples!
You are the most important people on earth!
From the beginning, God has entrusted His whole
creation into the hands and hearts of your love for each
other! You are the salt of the earth! You are the light of
the world!
Let your light continue to shine before others so that
they can feel your love and come to know the love of your
Heavenly Father.
~ Fr. Bob

We pray that married couples everywhere
will be strengthened in their vocation to be
examples of Christ’s love for the Church.
AMEN.
CELEBRATING CATHOLIC FAMILIES
Living the Word
5th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Jesus’ compassion for those who are ill and for those
who love them is apparent in the gospel reading
today. Let us show Jesus’ compassion for those who
are ill by visiting someone and by praying with them
for healing, wholeness, peace and union with others
and God.
5th Sunday in Ordinary Time
February 8, 2015
[The LORD] tells the number of the stars and
calls them by name.
— Psalm 147:4
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Surprisingly, the church moved very slowly in
claiming marriage as a focus of attention and care.
Nearly everywhere in the Roman world, citizens
agreed on how to celebrate marriage. Consent of
the man and woman is what made a marriage valid
in the eyes of the law, and although there was a
traditional ceremony, it was home‑based and
optional. The ceremony was for showing the social
status of the families involved (the procession ideally
detoured through crowds), and for reminding the
woman of her legal transfer from her father’s control
to her husband’s. The “big moment” of the ceremony
had nothing to do with vows, but with the bride’s
donning the yellow veil with red highlights that was
the daily wear of married women. A wedding feast
included soothsayers and animal sacrifice to the
new household’s gods. Christians found that
distasteful, of course, but since marriage was a
family matter, they could edit things out. The church
was comfortable with this, and sometimes
recommended that the couple seek the advice of the
bishop. His permission was only required for the
marriage of a cleric, or for a marriage Rome didn’t
recognize, such as between a free woman and a
slave. There was no blessing, no liturgy, no priest.
Christians followed the customs of the day, but they
knew that custom and relationships were
transformed from within themselves by the fact of
their baptism. Outwardly, Christians married exactly
as their pagan neighbors, but they certainly invested
the usual gestures with a dynamic sense of Christ’s
presence.

ST. VALENTINE’S DAY
**********************************************
This week we will observe Valentine’s
Day. Although St. Valentine has been
removed from the official Church
calendar, the day retains the tradition of
letting people know that we love them.
In addition to classroom valentines or
cards for family members, try to think
if there are people who may be overlooked and for whom
a little note or card would be a light to brighten their day.
First Reading — The leper will dwell apart, making an
abode outside the camp (Leviticus 13:1-2, 44-46).
Psalm — I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you
fill me with the joy of salvation (Psalm 32).
Second Reading — Do everything for the glory of God;
be imitators of Christ (1 Corinthians 10:31 — 11:1).
Gospel — The leprosy left him immediately, and he was
made clean (Mark 1:40-45).

LET’S PRAY FOR OUR SEMINARIANS
In order to support vocations in our diocese, you are
asked to add a special prayer for seminarians to your
daily prayers. The best way to encourage and
support our seminarians is to pray for them.
Prayer for Vocations
Loving God, How awesome are
your ways! Through your abundant
love you bless us with gifts that can
make our world holy and just.
Dwell deep in our hearts that we
may know how to share these gifts. Inspire many to
respond generously to your call to service in the
Church. May the fire of your love direct us on our
journey that we may act justly, love tenderly and
walk humbly with you. We give you the praise and
honor now and forever. Amen.
VOCATIONS
Family Life can build values integral to a strong
vocation — whether to priesthood, religious life or
marriage. Teaching your children to value
commitment, service and prayer will help them make
strong vocation decisions as adults and live out those
vocations with success and fulfillment.

A PRAYER FOR EVERY FAMILY
by Pope St. John Paul II
God, from whom all fatherhood in heaven and earth descends, Father, who are Love and Life, ensure that every
human family on earth shall become, through Your Son,
Jesus Christ, "born of woman," and through the Holy
Spirit, the source of divine charity, a true shrine of life and
love for the generations which are always renewing themselves. Ensure that Your grace shall guide the thoughts
and the works of spouses toward the good of their families
and of all families in the world. Ensure that the young generations shall find firm support in the family for their humanity and their growth in truth and love. Ensure the love,
reinforced by the grace of the Sacrament of Matrimony
shall show itself to be stronger than any weakness and
every crisis through which our families pass at times.
Amen.

Prayer for our Men and Women
in Military Service
O Prince of Peace, we humbly ask Your protection
for all our men and women in military service. Give
them unflinching courage to defend with honor,
dignity and devotion the rights of all who are
imperiled by injustice and evil. Guard our churches,
our homes, our schools, our hospitals, our factories,
our buildings and all those within from harm and
peril.
Protect our land and its peoples from
enemies within and without. Grant an early peace
with victory founded upon justice. Instill in the
hearts and minds of men and women everywhere a
firm purpose to live forever in peace and good will
toward all. Amen.
COMMENTS FROM THE NATIONAL
RIGHT TO LIFE COMMITTEE
What was once seen as an act of desperation,
the killing of one’s own child, is now fiercely
defended as a good and promoted right. Even
worse, a deadly blindness has come over our land, preventing many persons of good will from recognizing the
right of innocent human lives to respect, acceptance and
help.” (NCCB statement, 11/12/97)
