Overview of Miami Children’s Hospital
Miami Children’s Hospital (MCH) is
a freestanding pediatric medical
center located in Miami, Florida.
It has evolved into a world leader
in pediatric healthcare since it
opened its doors in 1950.
Located in beautiful South Florida,
Miami Children’s Hospital has 289
beds, more than 40 pediatric
specialties and subspecialties, and is home to Florida’s only free-standing pediatric level I
trauma center. With a medical staff of 650 physicians, more than 130 pediatric subspecialists
and over 3,500 employees, the hospital is renowned for excellence in all aspects of pediatric
medical care from birth through adolescence with ten specialty programs ranked among the
best in the nation in the 2012-13 rankings by U.S. News & World Report.
Miami Children’s Hospital is also home to the largest pediatric teaching program in the
southeastern United States and has been designated as one of the few Nursing Magnet
facilities, the nursing profession’s most prestigious institutional honor. Miami Children’s Hospital
first received this recognition in 2004 and they just recently received their third Nursing Magnet
recertification, putting them in a class of the top three percent of hospitals in the U.S.
MCH’s Pediatric Residency Program offers experience in all facets of pediatric care. The hospital
operates one of the largest free-standing pediatric residencies in the nation with 84 residents
and two chief residents. The three-year residency training program in pediatrics is affiliated
with the Florida International University (FIU) College of Medicine and is fully accredited by the
Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). It also has a fully accredited
pediatric dental residency, and a number of specialty fellowships.
Throughout the years, MCH recognized a need to develop
several Pediatric Outpatient Centers, to more effectively
serve the community. Currently, there are nine
outpatient centers that feature select pediatric services,
such as urgent care for children up to 21 years old,
comprehensive rehabilitation services for infants, children
and teens, and Early Steps Southernmost Coast focusing
on children under 3 at risk of developmental delays.
Additional services include imaging, laboratory, as well as
other speciailized programs. Soon MCH will open a tenth
center and they plan to continue this strategy throughout
the Miami-Dade/Fort Lauderdale metro area and beyond where it makes sense.
Recently the Miami Children’s Hospital Dan Marino Outpatient Center in Weston, Florida
celebrated 15 years of providing comprehensive evaluation and treatment of children with
special needs. In 1992, Dan and Claire Marino established the Dan Marino Foundation after
their son Michael was diagnosed with autism. The Foundation and the Miami Children’s Hospital

partnered to open the Center in 1998, which has filled a huge need within the community and
treats patients from around the world.
Plans are in place and construction has begun to build a
212,000-square foot, six story state of the art patient care
tower on the main hospital campus. This addition will include a
new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit, an Emergency Room expansion (which is nearly
complete), as well as other services. The addition will
incorporate the latest medical technology and family-friendly
enhancements. The new patient care tower will provide care
for critically ill newborns and children referred for advanced
care by hospitals throughout Florida as well as the Caribbean.
As the busiest Emergency Department in the state with
approximately 100,000 pediatric visits a year, the expansion
also includes a 47,000-square-foot emergency department
expansion that feature 72 patient care rooms, increased efficiencies in patient wait times, and
quicker access to medical treatment. Key components will include a comprehensive trauma
suite, fast track area, rapid care area, and critical care area. Additionally, there will be a
dedicated pediatric fracture care clinic and two x-ray suites.
Painted like a kid-themed hotel at Disney World the
exterior and interior of Miami Children’s Hospital are
brimming with fun. Included is a primary-colored castle
that looks like it was born straight from the imaginations
of its hopeful patients. The ultimate goal of the hospital
is to always provide the best pediatric healthcare in the
world. From the hospitals humble beginnings to today’s
world-class facilities and research institute, they strive to
provide the very best childcare worldwide with a

Below are some recent awards, recognitions, and firsts for Miami Children’s Hospital:

ANCC’s Nursing Magnet designation in 2003 and subsequent renewal in 2008 and 2013.

The Emergency Department cared for over 100,000 patients in 2012 and was the Kids
Crown Award recipient that year as “Best children’s ER” in Miami-Dade County,
according to the readers of South Florida Parenting Magazine.

MCH is the only Florida Hospital nationally ranked in all 10 pediatric subspecialties
assessed by U.S.News and World Report in both 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2013-2014.

The MCH Brain Institute is the largest clinical neurology program in the nation, treating
more than 45,000 children annually.

It is home to the largest children’s cancer center in the region and one of the top
children’s cancer care programs in the nation. No other program in Florida ranks higher.

The MCH Research Institute is the largest provider of pediatric clinical research services
for children of Latin origin in the southeastern United States and is currently conducting
more than 210 clinical research studies in 26 sub-specialties.

MCH has the largest Child Life Department with a total of 18 employees and is the only
program in South Florida that includes a representative on a hospital trauma team and
serves patients in the radiology department.

MCH’s Telehealth Center is a high-tech program designed to advance pediatric care for
children around the world through enhanced access to pediatric subspecialty physicians
and remote reading of diagnostic tests by highly trained experts.

MCH currently has nine Outpatient Centers across South Florida which offer a variety of
services, ranging from urgent care, rehabilitation services and imaging services as well
as some pediatric subspecialty office visits.

The MCH Midtown Outpatient Center, located at 3915 Biscayne Blvd, is the most recent
addition to the MCH Health System. In October 2012, the center began offering
rehabilitation services, including physical, occupational and speech-language therapies,
and outpatient pediatric imaging services (X-ray). On December 4, 2012, the center
began offering pediatric urgent care services for minor injuries and illnesses.

The Department of Radiology at Miami Children’s Hospital is a facility that is exclusively
focused on pediatrics. In 2012, Radiology performed a total of 129,794 Diagnostic xrays, MRI’s, CT Scans and ultrasounds at the main campus.

MCH features South Florida's only free-standing pediatric trauma center with a Level 1
designation.

The Neonatology Division admits more than 600 newborns each year, with virtually all
referred from general acute-care hospitals. The babies that are referred are in need of
an advanced level of tertiary care that is provided at MCH.

MCH is home to the largest hospital-based pediatric residency program in the
southeastern United States.

MCH performed the world’s first non-surgical tricuspid heart valve replacement.

MCH was the first hospital in Florida to successfully separate conjoined twins.

MCH was the first hospital in the United States and the Americas to use the Helex Septal
Occluder to treat atrial septal defects (ASD), a common congenital heart defect and first
hospital in the southeast to obtain permission for “compassionate use” of the
AMPLATZER® Muscular VSD Occluder, a device to close a hole between the two lower
chambers of a child's heart (ventricle septal defect).

MCH is the only Florida Hospital nationally ranked in all 10 pediatric subspecialties

The Role of the Director of Radiology
The Director of Radiology serves as a key part
of the leadership team at Miami Children’s
Hospital. The Director is responsible for
planning and directing the operations,
finances, quality, safety and business
development of the department in support of
its clinical/patient care mission. Where
applicable they will support key research and
teaching initiatives. This key leader will
establish effective relationships at multiple
organizational levels and promote
interdepartmental and intercampus collaboration and cooperation taking into account the
complexities of integrating key goals of growing the business and profitability along with having
the most advanced technology and highest of patient care standards. Additional responsibilities
include staff productivity and development, physician relations, and the implementation of
budgets and long range plans. This position will be accountable for the accomplishment of
results and the achievements of objectives, consistent with the hospital’s mission, values and
operational and strategic plans.
The Department of Radiology at MCH consists of a full

The radiologists have been associated with the hospital for many years and are highly regarded
for their services and quality of care. There are currently 15 radiologists employed by the
medical center. Education is a part of the culture in the department as there are three pediatric
fellowships and one radiology resident within the organization.
The Director of Radiology will be results oriented with strong operational leadership to build the
program to be the regional leader for pediatric imaging. This key leader will be instrumental in
developing positive relations between the physicians and staff to work cohesively to build the
success of the radiology department within the hospital and community. In addition, this
individual will be working closely with MCH’s affiliations to build a solid partnership so that the
best quality radiological needs are being provided for their pediatric patients.

Below are the key duties and responsibilities:

Partnering with the Chief of Radiology to drive strategies to increase physician and staff
productivity where appropriate and decrease unnecessary utilization throughout the
system.

Provide timely and accurate financial and operational statistics to physicians regarding
productivity and operational performance.

Manage and develop strong relationships amongst the physicians and staff through
operational leadership and ongoing communication.

Develop both an operating and capital budget as well as a staffing model for the
Radiology Department that meets organizational needs.

Enhance operational effectiveness with improvement projects for the radiology
department, using solid data and analytics that directly impact key metrics related to
people, service, growth, margin and quality.

Collaborate effectively with affiliated partners and community to support the MCH
Department of Radiology specific strategic initiatives.

Inform the physicians about current trends, problems and medical activities to facilitate
service and operational improvement.

Strategically align with the Marketing Department to drive consistent community and
system-wide business strategies to help develop new clinical programs while fostering
the expansion of existing clinical programs to enhance market share and improve
operational performance.

Focus on driving imaging volumes away from the main campus to the outpatient sites to
allow more research at the main facility.

Ensure clinic compliance with all regulatory agencies governing health care delivery and
the rules of accrediting bodies. Continually monitor operations, programs, and physical
properties. Implement appropriate changes.

Review the profitability of all cost centers, satellite offices, diagnostic services and other
ancillary services.

Ability to analyze all equipment and set up a 10-year strategic plan for the replacement
of all imaging equipment to one consistent brand across the organization.

Establish and enhance relationships with community pediatricians and
specialist/subspecialist practices to improve patient outcomes, communication and
referral management.

Maintain and foster strong relationships with key support areas within the hospital,
including clinical and non-clinical.

Coordinate physician and other provider recruitment processes.

Responsible for identifying potential risk areas within their responsible departments and
supports the resolution to solving the problems.
Candidate Qualifications

Education and Certification

Bachelor’s degree in Radiology, Business, Healthcare Administration, clinical or related
field

Graduate of an AMA Accredited School of Radiology Technology.

Registered by the American Registry of Radiology Technologist (ARRT).

CRA preferred.

Licensed by the State of Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitation Services,
preferred.

Minimum of three years of management/administrative experience with a progressive
healthcare organization including management of personnel, payroll, budgets and
capital. An additional five years of experience as a Radiology Technologist.

Candidates must have experience working in a complex hospital radiology department
(or the equivalent) and preferably in a pediatric health care setting.

At least five years experience in a competitive healthcare/imaging marketplace; ideally
this individual will have experience implementing strategies to grow market share in the
imaging environment.

Experience working closely and collaborating with physician specialists and subspecialists
to drive strategic/business planning and financial & operational performance.
