THIRD IN ORDINARY TIME
READINGS FOR SUNDAY
VOL. 31 NO. 5
First Reading: Deuteronomy 18:15-20
Moses explains to the people that a prophet will come from among
them, and that they should listen to this prophet’s words, for God has
told him of this prophet. God also tells Moses that anyone who
pretends to speak in his words, or speaks in the name of other gods
shall die.
Second Reading: I Corinthians 7:32-35
Paul tells the Corinthians how an unmarried man or woman is able to
devote themselves fully to God without concern for the needs of a
spouse. Paul explains that God wants to help them promote good
and devote themselves more fully to God.
Gospel: Mark 1:21-28
As Jesus was teaching, a man with an unclean spirit came to the
synagogue and asked if Jesus had come to destroy them. Jesus
ordered the spirit out of the man, who shrieked violently as the spirit
departed. The people were amazed at the authority he had over the
spirit.

HYMN NOTES
While earlier hymnodists made paraphrases of hymns, Henry Lyte,
who won the prize for poetry three years in a row at Trinity College,
Dublin, added a new dimension by making them poetical
interpretations. PRAISE MY SOUL THE KING OF HEAVEN is such
an interpretation of Psalm 103 and includes such memorable lines as
"Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven," and "Father-like he tends
and spares us." The editors of our hymnal have wisely chosen to
include the often omitted verse four "Frail as summer's flower we
flourish, Blows the wind, and it is gone.".
FEAST OF THE WEEK
St. Blaise
(d. 316) Feast Day: February 3
We know more about the devotion to St. Blaise by Christians around
the world than we know about the saint himself. His feast is observed
as a holy day in some Eastern Churches. The Council of Oxford, in
1222, prohibited servile labor in England on Blaise’s feast day. The
Germans and Slavs hold him in special honor and for decades many
United States Catholics have sought the annual St. Blaise blessing
for their throats
We know that Bishop Blaise was martyred in his episcopal city of
Sebastea, Armenia, in 316. The legendary Acts of St. Blase were
written 400 years later. According to them Blaise was a good bishop,
working hard to encourage the spiritual and physical health of his
people. Although the Edict of Toleration (311), granting freedom of
worship in the Roman Empire, was already five years old,
persecution still raged in Armenia. Blaise was apparently forced to
flee to the back country. There he lived as a hermit in solitude and
prayer, but made friends with the wild animals. One day a group of
hunters seeking wild animals for the amphitheater stumbled upon
Blaise’s cave. They were first surprised and then frightened. The
bishop was kneeling in prayer surrounded by patiently waiting
wolves, lions and bears.
As the hunters hauled Blaise off to prison, the legend has it, a mother
came with her young son who had a fish bone lodged in his throat. At
Blaise’s command the child was able to cough up the bone.
Agricolaus, governor of Cappadocia, tried to persuade Blaise to
sacrifice to pagan idols. The first time Blaise refused, he was beaten.
The next time he was suspended from a tree and his flesh torn with
iron combs or rakes. (English wool combers, who used similar iron
combs, took Blaise as their patron. They could easily appreciate the
agony the saint underwent.) Finally he was beheaded.
Comment: Four centuries give ample opportunity for fiction to creep
in with fact. Who can be sure how accurate Blaise’s biographer was?
But biographical details are not essential. Blaise is seen as one more
example of the power those have who give themselves entirely to
Jesus. As Jesus told his apostles at the Last Supper, “If you remain
in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it
will be done for you” (John 15:7). With faith we can follow the lead of
the Church in asking for Blaise’s protection.
Quote: “Through the intercession of St. Blaise, bishop and martyr,
may God deliver you from ailments of the throat and from every other
evil. In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”
(Blessing of St. Blaise). Butler’s Lives of Saints

JOURNEYSONGS, OUR NEW HYMNAL IN 2015
St. Patrick's Church and Worship Center will be receiving new hymnals in
early January 2015.
Journeysongs contains the most recent translations of psalms and prayers
approved by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Our beautiful new
hymnals will contain a combination of traditional mainstream Catholic
hymnody and contemporary religious songs.
All parishioners will have the opportunity to memorialize the hymnals. For a
$25 donation, a book plate will be attached to the front inside cover. It is a
thoughtful memorial for a loved one, or as a commemorative celebration of a
sacrament, wedding, milestone birthday, or answered prayer. Hymnals are
not available for purchase. Memorial bookplates will be available year-round
until all hymnals are memorialized. Please give this your prayerful
consideration. Contact the Parish Office for details in January. When the
hymnals arrive we will start giving out bulletins after communion since
the readings are in the hymnals.
