This program guide is a reference for all 2014-2015 events,

It is with great pride and joy that I get to
work with the Jewish teens of San Diego at
the Lawrence Family Jewish Community
Center, JACOBS FAMILY CAMPUS. Each
year I witness the remarkable determination
and tremendous capabilities of our young
San Diego leaders. Our teen programs offer
opportunities for teens to grow, learn, and
thrive through activities that are social, cultural, athletic,
service-oriented, and/or leadership training. It is our goal to
create emotionally well-rounded leaders of the future!
Whether it is joining our 60 member Teen Leadership Council
(TLC) led by President Natalie Aroeste, or by being a CIT/LIT/PLT
at our Camp Jaycee, the teens have shown their willingness
to make a difference and be leaders in our community. Other
programs like JSERVE, Shabbat360, and Like Israel Project
connect teens to San Diego and teach ways to repair the
world. It’s always fun to take our teens on the West Coast
College Tour or the Big Bear Ski and Snowboarding Trip,
and who can forget our awesome Club J and Dodgeball
Tournament. Additionally, we provide community service
and social programming for our Middle School teens!
Lastly, the JCC Maccabi Games and Artsfest is always
an experience of a lifetime with the San Diego Delegation
representing our community in this celebration of Jewish
culture, athletics, and fun! These programs all cater to the
growth of confident, able, and mature young adults.
M E S SAG E F R O M T H E T E E N D I R E C TO R
Dear Teens and Parents,
There is so much to get excited about this year within the
JCC Teen Department as we continue to unite San Diego
teens in an environment that fosters self-esteem, Jewish
identity, individuality, community, service, and leadership!
I look forward to meeting you all at our programs in 2015!

MARCH OF THE LIVING
March of the Living
April 12–26, 2015
March of the Living is a two-week international, educational program
that brings Jewish teens from all over the world to Poland on
Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Memorial Day, to march from Auschwitz
to Birkenau, the largest concentration camp complex built during
World War II. They then travel to Israel to observe Yom HaZikaron,
Israel Memorial Day, and Yom Ha’Atzmaut, Israel Independence
Day. The goal of March of the Living is for these young people to
learn the lessons of the Holocaust and to lead the Jewish people
into the future vowing, “Never Again”.
Applications are available on line at www.motlthewest.org. For more
information contact Marcia Tatz Wollner at (858) 362-1174 or e-mail
[email protected]. There are five components of the application
process: general application, medical form, essay detailing why you
want to go on March of the Living, letters of recommendation written
by a teacher, principal, Rabbi, high school counselor or youth advisor,
and a personal interview.
Applications and a $1,000 deposit are due by November 15, 2014. The
total cost for the 2015 March of the Living is $6,175. This includes
domestic airfare, international travel, food and accommodations in
Poland and Israel. A community gift of $2,000 was provided to each
student to assist in off-setting the cost. A fully paid community
scholarship for one student is available through the Lili Bialar z”

Partners in Prevention is the educational component for Beit T’Shuvah
(B.T. is a residential treatment center in Los Angeles)
that provides emotional and spiritual healing
to people with addictive and behavioral
disorders. Through the Teen Department
at the JCC, the program works together
with synagogues, day schools, and
youth groups to bring the message of
spirituality and wholeness to young
adults and their parents. B.T. alumni
share their stories, how they became
addicts, and their journeys back to their
families and community. Practitioners trained
through B.T. lead interactive sessions with teens
and their parents. These sessions combine Jewish spirituality as
well as life-skills that promote healthy decisions and relationships.
The focus of this program is to teach Judaism as a path to promote
self-acceptance, self-worth, spiritual values, and family harmony.
The program addresses addictive and self-destructive behaviors
that are becoming common among teens against the backdrop of
Jewish learning, spirituality, and celebration as powerful tools of
personal transformation.
