James McNamara! We are delighted to welcome Msgr. James McNamara to St. James Parish, who is making a pastoral visit with us this weekend. During his time with us he will be meeting with the parish priests and deacons, the Parish Staff, our Trustees and Finance Committee and leaders from our parish ministries and organization heads, looking at “honoring our past and building for the future.” Another successful Chili Cook-Off We extend our gratitude to Maureen Fox and the Members of our Family Ministry Team for the wonderful “Chili Cook-Off” that they sponsored last Saturday. About 70 people attended, during which a variety of prepared chili recipes were enjoyed by those who attended. Thank you everyone! Page Three “Please, please, don’t give up chocolate for Lent!” As I have shared with you during my homilies the past two weeks, “please, please do not give up chocolate for Lent!” Instead, consider participating in the “Living the Eucharist” Program. In his Apostolic Exhortation, “The Joy of the Gospel,” Pope Francis extends a personal invitation to YOU and ME, “I invite all Christians, everywhere, at this very moment, to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ. . . .” In response to our Holy Father’s invitation we are offering the second of three years of ”Living the Eucharist,” a six-week program of spiritual renewal. Through this program we will deepen our understanding of the meaning of the Eucharist, how we can participate more fully and actively in Sunday Mass, and discover how to bring the light of Christ to others in response to what we have celebrated. This program is meant not only for you who are here at Mass today but also for those who are not practicing their faith of late; perhaps, your adult children or grandchildren, another relative, neighbor or friend, and for those looking for a church in which to belong. You know who these people are. I am asking you to reach out to someone inviting him or her to join you for this special six-week experience during Lent. Most people are looking for something to do for Lent. This is a wonderful choice as it fulfills the purpose of Lent, which is to assist us in deepening our commitment to Christ and the church through embracing more fully our Baptismal call to become more and more like Jesus. Then on Easter Sunday we will join together in the renewal of our Baptismal Promises with a deepened commitment to live our faith “intentionally and publicly.” The “Living the Eucharist” Program has several components: 1) gathering in small groups in an informal setting to share our faith, 2) the possibility of family activities that can take place at home, 3) a meeting of high school aged parishioners who will view videos as they learn what it means to live their faith in an active way, 4) the daily use of the booklet, “From Exodus to Easter,” filled with reflections and meditations to guide us through the Season of Lent and 5) following along with the meditations that will be printed in the bulletin each Sunday during Lent. Please participate in the “Living the Eucharist” program as fully as you can. A while ago I received a challenging email that had a profound effect on me. It read, “There are times in each of our lives that we have to decide: change or more of the same? Perhaps you are there now. What will you choose?” (Matthew Kelly, The Dynamic Catholic) That’s the Lenten spirit! I hope that you will join me and other parishioners and choose “change” and not “more of the same.” 435 St. James Page Four The Fifth Sunday, Sunday February In Ordinary 2, 2014Time 435 St. James Sunday, February 8, 2014 2015 Time Twenty-Sixth Sunday, Sunday February in Ordinary 2, Page Five It’s not too late! REFLECTING ON THE WORD (from Sadlier Publications) Mark 1:29-39 Question of the Week: What is the most important lesson Jesus has taught you? Mark describes for us how Jesus' day begins and ends with taking care of others. He heals Simon's mother-in-law, He cures others who are sick, He drives out demons from those who are possessed. He comforts the downhearted and discouraged. The crowds follow him wherever he goes. Even when he goes off to a lonely place to pray and be renewed, Jesus is tracked down by his disciples who say, "Everybody is looking for you!" Without complaint, Jesus responds at once by heading for the nearby villages to heal and preach and comfort. When you are busy or tired, how do you respond to family members who want your help or attention? Why is it sometimes hard for us to respond to others' needs? Who or what can remind us to be more loving and patient with others around us? When you hear about people who are sick, lonely, or discouraged, what do you do? How do you think today's gospel story might inspire you to be more like Jesus? Upcoming Events: On Saturday, February 28, 2015 from 9:00 am until 11:00 am in the Parish Center, the Book Nook has arranged a one-day sale of items for First Holy Communion and Confirmation. We will have a vendor with: Boys and Girls First Communion Sets, Arm Bows, Ties, Veils, Missals, Rosaries, Bibles, Photo Albums, Picture Frames, Keepsake Boxes, Rosary Bracelets and Crosses.
