The Timber Mill
Our Timber Mill at our headquarters in Quarry
Lane, Chichester boasts a fast production
sawmill where we produce in excess of 150
different types of planed-all-round skirtings,
architraves, TGV boards, shiplaps and
mouldings in Whitewood, Redwood, Cedar,
Douglas Fir and various species of Hardwood.
We are able to supply FSC®-certified or PEFCcertified machined timber to order, with the
Chain of Custody guarantee that this has been
sourced legally and responsibly from managed
forests.
TIMBER
Our mill is responsive: every week, we custommachine thousands of metres of mouldings to
customers’ own patterns. Typical turnaround
times achieved are under 5 working days. Our
mill is environmentally-friendly and produces
up to 8 tonnes of wood shavings daily. This is
recycled as animal bedding or converted into wood pellets for biomass heating.
We have supplied specially machined timber profiles to Windsor Castle, Arundel Castle, Clarence
House, Goodwood House and Uppark House. Many other key Georgian and Victorian buildings
in the south have benefited from our experience with complicated mouldings to match and
replace existing period features.
With decades of specialist machining experience in producing intricate mouldings, our work speaks
for itself. So challenge our expertise – no matter how unique your moulding is, we can match it in

understanding the changes to BS 5534
mechanical fixings
72 years after it was first introduced, the latest revision of BS 5534 the Code of
Practice for Slating and Tiling, published in August of 2014, has sought to bring the
standard up to date with modern building practices.
Most notably, the standard has recognised the need for a change in the fixing
specifications for roofing elements after updating their wind loading calculations,
based heavily on changes in the UK climate. In addition, the use of mortar bedding
to ridges and hips had been identified as the single largest cause of roof failures,
especially when an incorrect mortar mix had been used.
LEGISLATION
Mortar is now seen as an insufficient means of securing tiles to the roof and that any
element secured by this method must also include a mechanical fix.
In particular this applies to the fixing of ridge and hip tiles, which was identified by
the N.H.B.C as the number one cause of roof failures that resulted in claims. To
this end, BS 5524 now states that even if mortar is used, then the ridge and hip
tiles must also be mechanically secured to the roof.
The use of mechanical fixings in addition to mortar bedding may
necessitate the installation of an additional batten to fix to, which
itself is mechanically fixed to the rafters. This method can often be
difficult to install and still does not remove the risk of subsequent
mortar failure resulting in the roof leaking causing damage to
the property.
By far the simplest, quickest and most cost effective way
of complying with the new standard is to join the switch
to dry fix methods of roofing.

Due to the nature in which the products are fitted, there is no need for mortar,
making the job of fixing the ridge and hip tiles quick, easy and clean, as well as
making it possible during adverse weather conditions.
The use of mortar can also be problematic in bedded verges, so why not go totally
mortar free and use one of Manthorpe’s advanced dry verge systems to avoid the
problems associated with mortar bedding at verges?
