Time Line of Important Deadlines
New in 2015!!! NAWW membership dues CANNOT be paid with convention registration.
Make sure your 2015 membership dues are paid PRIOR to submitting your convention
registration. Your enrollment may be delayed until membership has been confirmed.
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 24: Class Registration Form, Convention Registration Form and
your payment are due. A postmark on, or prior, to this date is REQUIRED to be included in the
class lottery should a lottery become necessary for any of the classes. Note: the convention
registration fee increases if your forms are postmarked AFTER February 24. Forms and payment
are to be submitted to: Carol Thompson, 1537 Sweet Juliet Lane, Lincoln, CA 95648-8639.
SUNDAY, MARCH 1: Class enrollment confirmations will start being sent out via email.
Submit a SASE #10 envelope with your registration forms if you would prefer to be notified via
mail.
MONDAY, MARCH 2: Straw Expo Registration Form and payments are due. Postmark on
or prior to this date is REQUIRED. Form and payment are to be submitted to:

THURSDAY, MARCH 5: 2015 Convention Scholarship Opportunity information is due.

Note: If you know of anyone who would like to attend the convention for the first time, please
refer them to the NAWW website for application (www.nawwstraw.org). Scholarship recipients
must be an NAWW member, or become a member, to be eligible for consideration.

made in writing either via email or snail mail (requests must be received by this date). Requests

FRIDAY, MARCH 20: Deadline to make your reservation at the Nugget to receive the

REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Policies
**To register for the convention and participate in classes, you must be a member of the National
Association of Wheat Weavers.
**Register spouses and guests using the mini-registration line, to obtain a badge needed for
meals, tour, and other convention activities.
**You will receive a name badge when you arrive at convention which you need to wear for all
convention activities. No admittance to any convention activities without a name badge.
**All convention and class fees must accompany the Registration and Class Enrollment Forms.
**The Registration Fee includes one copy of the 2015 Convention Workbook, which has
instructions for all classes. Additional copies may be ordered via the Registration Form.
**Classes are only for those who have enrolled and paid the class fee. No floating between
classes will be allowed.
**Cameras are welcome at the Straw Expo. They may also be used in classrooms unless
otherwise designated by the instructor. NOTE: The Straw Expo with be open Saturday, 8:30-4.
**To participate in the Friday Night Favor Exchange, bring an unwrapped straw favor you have
made, with your name attached.
**Bring your straw “bling,” i.e. your straw hat, headdress and straw jewelry to wear at our meals,
especially the Saturday banquet.

Registration Instructions
**Please complete all areas of the Convention Registration Form and the Class Registration
Form, and include payment. Make checks payable to NAWW and send everything to Carol
Thompson, 1537 Sweet Juliet Lane, Lincoln, CA 95648-8639.
**Registration must be postmarked by Tuesday, February 24, in order to be placed in the class
lottery. Placement in classes is subject to space availability for registration postmarked after the
24th.
**Email confirmation will begin to go out on Sunday, March 1. If you do not have email, please
enclose a self addressed stamped #10 envelope with your registration forms to receive enrollment
confirmation.
**There will be no registration refunds after Wednesday, March 18. Cancellation requests must
be received in writing, either snail mail (1537 Sweet Juliet Ln, Lincoln, CA 95648-8639) or
email ([email protected]), and can be sent to Carol Thompson.
**The class fees do not include wheat or other materials unless designated so by the instructor.
**Please see individual class listings for information about materials, kits, and other supplies you
need to bring to the class.
**If a kit is offered for a class, purchase is mandatory. The registration chair will notify the
teacher of the number of kits required.
**Kit fees are paid directly to the instructor at the beginning of class. The exact amount is greatly
appreciated.

Hotel Information
The John Ascuaga’s Nugget Resort & Casino welcomes the National Association of Wheat
Weavers for their 2015 Convention, April 8-12, 2015. The hotel is located at 11 0 0
N u g g e t Av e . , Sparks, NV 89431. FREE shuttle service is available to and from the
Reno-Tahoe International Airport, and a schedule can be found on the Nugget website:
www.janugget.com.
The hotel is offering NAWW members a single rate of $88.00 a night, plus all applicable
taxes, for one king bed or two queens. Up to two additional people can be added to
the room at $10.00 each, plus taxes. Our members are responsible for making their
own reservations and paying their own hotel expenses. The room rate of $88.00 is good
from April 6th through April 13th, 2015. Note: the rate does NOT include breakfast. Note
too that as a casino resort, smoking is allowed throughout the facility although there are nonsmoking rooms available.

Class Enrollment Policies and Information
Classes:
* Each class session is 3.5 hours long and costs $20.00
* 6 beginner classes
* 11 intermediate classes
* 2 advanced/intermediate classes
* 1 advanced classes
Skill Levels:
Each class is listed as either Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced/Intermediate, or Advanced. These
levels are listed on each project description page.
* Beginner: is suitable for all skill levels and could have a general prerequisite.
* Intermediate: is suitable for a participant with moderate prior experience weaving wheat, and
there could be some specific prerequisites for the class.
* Advanced/Intermediate: is suitable for a participant with extensive prior experience with the
plaits being used in the class because they won't be taught.
* Advanced: is suitable for a participant with extensive prior experience with straw art. There
are very specific skills needed to succeed in the class and there will be prerequisites.
Prerequisites:
Please be confident when reviewing the prerequisites for each class you take so that you can
meet the expectations of the class. If you have any questions about your ability to handle
class material, please contact the instructor directly as soon as possible.
* Before signing up for a class, it is necessary to carefully check the prerequisites for that class.
* The prerequisites are skills that the instructor requests that participants already have, as they are
necessary for the project but will NOT be taught in class.
* The purpose of prerequisites is to give each participant the opportunity to succeed and to
facilitate the smooth flow of the class. With the prerequisites met, the project is more likely to be
completed within the allotted time.
* Adherence to the prerequisites is important.
* If you do not understand the prerequisites, contact the instructor directly. Instructor email
addresses or phone numbers are listed on the Class Schedule, page 6.
Work required prior to class:
*Some classes may have work the instructor requests be completed prior to coming to class.
*It is important that these requests are honored and the work completed as directed.
*In some cases the NAWW Plait Directory is referred to with the appropriate page number.
*Some instructors will send enrolled students instructions for work to be done, in advance, and
bring with you to the class.

Supplies for class:
All convention participants must bring the following general wheat weaving supplies:
* Wheat for each class (cleaned, sorted and soaked before class, as indicated in course
descriptions and unless there is a required kit for the class), soaking tray (provided, if requested),
towel, weaving thread, pointed scissors, ruler, pin board and pins. Specific supplies for each class
are listed by the instructor in the course description and must be brought to class by each
participant.
* Reminder: if you are traveling by air, be sure to put glue guns and all sharp objects, no matter
how small, in your checked luggage as these items may be confiscated. If you are not checking
luggage you may ship items to the hotel.

Class Kits
* Some instructors offer kits of supplies for their classes.
* If a kit is offered for a class, enrolled students are required to purchase the kit.
* Instructors will be notified by the registration chair how many enrolled in the class, so enough
kits will be prepared.
* If you wish to purchase more than one kit, you must contact the instructor directly to see if s/he
is able to supply extras.
* Kits will be purchased at the beginning of class. Exact kit fee amount is greatly appreciated.
Hospitality
The hospitality room will be open Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Only drinks and snacks will be
available. There are many restaurants inside the Nugget as well as across the street from the
resort for you to choose from for your meals. The only group meals arranged for convention are
the Friday evening buffet and the Saturday plated banquet.

Tour and Sites Information
Tour the Old Mining Town of Virginia City (http://visitvirginiacitynv.com):
Meet in the hotel lobby at the front desk, Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at 10:00 a.m.
Virginia City sprang up as a boom town with the 1859 discovery of the Comstock Lode, the first
major silver deposit discovery in the U.S.. At the peak in the mid 1860's, the population was
estimated at 25,000 residents. The population today is about 855 people. “C” Street, the main
business street, is lined with 1860's and 1870's buildings housing specialty shops of all kinds and
is the largest federally designated historical district in America maintained in its original
condition. We will first visit the Historic Fourth Ward School and museum with a docent-led tour.
The cost is $10.00 for entrance and transportation. Pay when we meet in the lobby (exact
amount for your party is appreciated). After the tour of the school, you can tour the town on
your own.
Please notify Kristen Scholz no later than Wednesday, March 25 if you will attend this tour
and the number of people in your group. Send her an email with the names of those
attending ([email protected]) or leave a message on her machine if you do not

Straw Expo Information
Location:
John Ascuaga’s Nugget Resort & Casino in the Ponderosa A Room
Purpose and eligibility: The purpose of the Straw Expo is to promote and stimulate
interest in preserving the art of wheat weaving. Booths shall display straw, straw art, wheat
weavings, supplies, books, fibers, and/or other related items. The Straw Expo is open to all
NAWW members, as well as the public, for the full day. Suppliers, distributors, wholesalers and
weavers are urged to register for the Straw Expo to attain maximum visibility for their products.
Each booth must be in one name. Several exhibitors may share a booth, but one person must
be responsible for booth registration.

Fee: The fee is $40.00 per booth and double booths may be reserved. Each booth consists of
one 6-foot long by 30 inches wide table plus two chairs. Entries will be processed on a firstcome-first-serve basis.
Display information: Tables will be set-up with table clothes and skirting. Electricity is
available; however, you must supply your own extension cords. All booth set-ups, other than
table and chairs, are the responsibility of the exhibitor. Exhibits must be arranged so they are
completely within the allotted space, and do not obstruct the view or interfere with the exhibit
space of another exhibitor. Aisles must be unobstructed. NAWW reserves the right to reject or
restrict any exhibit that may be objectionable or obstructive.
Booth staffing: Booth staffing is the responsibility of the exhibitor. A central cashier service
will be available for exhibitors who need to be away from their booth in order to teach or take
classes during the convention.

Scholarship Opportunity
Memorial Fund Scholarships are available for first time convention participants who are already
NAWW members.* If you have not attended an NAWW convention previously and would like to
do so, you may apply for a scholarship. Simply send an email (or snail mail) notification to
Dianne Ruff stating that you would like to apply for a scholarship. That notification needs to
contain your name, address, phone number and email address (if you have one). The scholarship
covers the registration fee, four class fees and the Saturday night banquet fee.

In tandem with our Straw Expo, members of the National Association of Wheat Weavers
(NAWW) will offer an opportunity to members of the public to try their hand at weaving wheat.
Anyone is welcome to stop in and make a beginning-level piece out of straw. All materials are
provided for free. And be sure to check out the wheat-related items for sale at the Straw Expo
while there.
