reserve a space. We have many groups who play and we
always try to accommodate all.
Noise makers? We would love to have the noise
makers from our New Year’s Eve Party to use again at
the Mardi Gras Party on Feb. 17. If you happen to have
one just drop it by Lynn’s office. Thank you.
Movies: We continue to offer a variety of movies in our
Cinema and are interested in times, days to show
movies, and also, we would appreciate donations of
good quality DVD’s and newer, more recently released
movies.
Library: In order to replenish our library with some
missing books the Library Committee is hosting a
“Round Up Day” on Thursday, February 26. As you
clean and organize your homes gather books to return
or donate to the library and drop them off in Lynn’s
office. Check all books to see if any belong to Clairmont
Place. Books that are missing are “Unbroken”, “ The
Help” and “My Beloved World”. These were books
newly purchased for the library. Please return.
Register your car: All Clairmont Place residents must
register your car and have a decal sticker on your car. It
is for your security and allows our staff to know if your
car is one belonging to a resident or not. If security sees
a car without the registration decal it we won’t know
who it belongs to. We cannot contact you if you leave
lights on, a purse left in a car, or other safety concerns.

Annual English Afternoon Tea: On Sunday,
February 8, 2015, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in
Decatur will host its 15th Annual English Afternoon
Tea in the parish hall. Please join us at 2:00 P.M. or
4:00 P.M. for tea, scones, sandwiches and sweets. The
tea proceeds benefit community outreach programs
which in the past have included Hagar's House, Decatur
Emergency Assistance Ministry and Our
House. Advance tickets are $15 and must be paid for in
full by Friday, Feb. 6th. After Feb. 6th, tickets will be
available at the tea for $20. In addition, in celebration
of our 15th year, a cookbook of recipes served at the tea
will be available for purchase. Holy Trinity is located at
515 E. Ponce de Leon Avenue, Decatur. For additional
information, tickets and reservations for parties of 4 or

Homestead Exemption: Have you moved from your
home to Clairmont Place in the past year? Do you need to
schedule to meet with someone from the tax
commissioners office to assist with your Homestead
Exemption? Sign up at the Front Desk to schedule your

Friday Morning Exercise changes days and time: We
are hoping to encourage more participation for the Friday
Morning class who take the “Ageless Grace” chair class
with Sandy, so we are offering the class on Tuesdays at
1:15. The Friday morning class will not meet beginning in
February. The class will meet on Tuesdays at 1:15 PM.
Laughter, Brain Fitness and Older Adults
Laughter may not only be the best medicine; it may
also offer a way to improve memory, according to a study
presented at the 2014 Experimental Biology Meeting, held
in April 2014 in San Diego.
Researchers from Loma Linda, California, presented
the study, which examined the relationship; between
cortisol and memory, and investigated whether humor and
laughter could reduce the damage that cortisol can cause
to the brain. Cortisol, a stress hormone, is known to
affect memory and learning ability in older adults.
Researchers showed a funny 20-minute video to two
groups of elderly adults – one comprising healthy
individuals and the other consisting of people with
diabetes – and then asked participants to complete a test
that evaluated learning recall and sight recognition.
Cortisol levels were measured before and after the video
performance. Test results were compared against those of
a control group that had not watched the funny video.
Data analysis showed that both groups that had
watched the funny video had lower cortisol levels than the
control group. The people with diabetes experienced the
most change in cortisol totals, while the healthy older
adults showed the most improvement in memory test
scores. All funny-video viewers scored higher than
control group members on every aspect of memory.
Lee Berk, DrPH, a study coauthor, said in a press
release from the Federation of American Societies for
Experimental Biology, “It’s simple. The less stress you
have, the better your memory. Humor reduces
detrimental stress hormones like cortisol that decrease
memory hippocampal neurons, lowers your blood
pressure, and increases blood flow and your mood state.
The act of laughter – or simply enjoying some humor – increases the release of endorphins and dopamine in the brain,
which provides a sense of pleasure and reward. These positive and beneficial neurochemical changes, in turn, make the
immune system function better. There are even changes in brain wave activity towards what’s called the ‘gamma wave
band frequency,’ which also amp up memory and recall.” IDEA Fitness Journal, January 2015, page 70

“Ageless Grace,” with instructor, Sandy Bramlett, is moving to a new
day and time. Class meets on Tuesdays at 1:15 with hopes that a later
start time will allow more participation, plus it won’t conflict with
