OLCA’s 23rd Annual Breastfest Conference Page 2 Faculty Conference Objectives Nils Bergman, MD, PhD Jill Bergman, BA Chris Smith RN, IBCLC, ANLC Discuss techniques for supporting mothers with sick or premature infants Describe the neuroscience basis for current parenting practices Describe strategies for building resilience in maternity care providers Describe the scientific and evidence base or skin-to-skin contact Describe the importance of birth Kangaroo Mother Care and risks of separating newborns and mothers Describe key maternal neurobehavioral aspects in the perinatal period Describe key neurobehaviors of breastfeeding infants including premature infants Explain the history of Donor Milk Banking in Ohio Discuss current breastfeeding activities in Ohio Kangaroula: While a doula focuses on supporting a mother in labour, a Kangaroula does this also to ensure that the developmental needs of the BABY are met in the first minutes and hours of life to minimise stress and give the baby and mother dyad the optimal start to early bonding and breastfeeding. Early Parenting Informed by Neuroscience: Early skin to skin contact and breastfeeding change parents’ brains to make parenting so much easier. This neuroscience helps parents to discern a way through conflicting advice from our culture. Supporting Health Professionals: Working with nursing staff and helping them managing their own burnout, while keeping compassion for their patients. (“Managing your own oxytocin”) The Scientific and Evidence Base for Skin-to-Skin Contact: Brain anatomy, physiology and neurodevelopment of the newborn in the perinatal period; effects of separation on the newborn; viable alternative to incubator care. Kangaroo Mother Care: Restoring the Original Paradigm for Infant Care: Source of our beliefs in health care; history of neonatal care; core contribution of birth KMC and avoiding maternal-infant separation; describe underlying science of toxic stress. Maternal Perinatal Neurobehaviour: Sensitization and attunement; maternal neurobiological connections with her newborn; changes in maternal neurobehavior related to birth practices, breastfeeding and outcomes. A Neurobehavioural Approach to Breastfeeding: Developmental continuity including premature infants; neuroscience processes that impact breastfeeding; sensory capabilities of fetus and newborn; feeding frequency and infant stomach capacity; implementation of improved perinatal practices.
