Title Pastor Deacon Parish Secretary Business Manager Religious Education Coordinator Building-Groundskeeper Sanctus Redemptor February 2015 Holy Redeemer Catholic Church – West Main Street at Berry Avenue From the Pastor’s Office… Dear Brothers and Sisters, We are on the cuff of entering a time of turbulence physically and spiritually. The architectural plans for the religious education building/columbarium have been approved. The finances have been approved. A bidding contractor has been chosen and the contract is being written. We need the bishop to approve the contract and we will soon begin to break ground. It will be a turbulent time and the grounds of the parish will seem to be in disarray for a little while. But then something beautiful and great will emerge. The same can be said about the time of Lent. We will voluntarily undergo a turbulent time of 40 days. We will fast (at the very least on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday), we will increase our prayers and will give alms (charity – giving to others what is rightly our own). It will be hard and arduous but it is only so that our souls emerge more beautifully conformed to the will of God. St. Augustine said: “There are two times, one which is now, and is spent in the temptations and tribulations of this life; the other which shall by then, and shall be spent in eternal security and joy. In figure of these, we celebrate two periods: the time before Easter, and the time after Easter. That which is before Easter signifies the sorrow of this present life; that which is after Easter, the blessedness of our future state… Hence it is that we spend the first in fasting and prayer; and in the second we give up our fasting, and give ourselves to praise.” In Christ, Fr. Lenten Discipline/Diocese News Watch over them, O Lord, as their days increase; bless and guide them wherever they may be. Strengthen them when they stand; comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall; and in their hearts may your peace which passes understanding abide all the days of their life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. V V , Subiaco, AR 72865 www.subi.org 479-934-1034 February 2015 LENTEN DISCIPLINE OF THE CHURCH The discipline of the Church regarding fast, abstinence and other forms of penance during the season of Lent: 1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The law of fasting allows one full meal and two smaller ones during the day with no snacking between meals. The law of abstinence prohibits the eating of meat. 2. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence in the U.S. 3. The obligation of abstinence begins at age 14. The law of fasting obliges all between the ages of 18-59. 4. Pastors and parents are to see to it that minors, though not bound by the law of fast and abstinence, are educated in the authentic sense of penance and encouraged to do acts of penance suitable to their age. 5. All members of the Christian faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten season beyond what is prescribed by Law. ASH WEDNESDAY COLLECTION On Ash Wednesday a special collection will be taken up to support missionary activities and the priests and religious who proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ as they serve among the people of our diocese.
