CARTER’S COUNSELOR CORNER
What to do if your child is not doing well in school
If your child is not doing well in school, find out the reason why. Most students who do not do well
in school feel like they are failures. They are usually frustrated, discouraged, and sometimes angry.
The “I don’t care” attitude they often display is normally a defense mechanism they use when they
don’t know what else to do. It is important for them to understand that their parents have not given
up on them. They also need to know that their parents are interested, supportive, and willing to
take the time to help them become more successful in school. Most students who are not doing
well in school usually have problems in one or more of the following areas:
ATTENDANCE- Attendance is the number one school success factor. Therefore, it is extremely
important for students to be in school on time each and every day. Unless a child is truly ill, he or
she needs to be in school.
APPROPRIATE COURSES- It is hard to expect students to get good grades if they are in classes
that are not a good fit for them. If you feel your child’s classes are either too difficult or too easy for
them, call the school counselor.
ACCOUNTABILITY- It is human nature to “slack off” when we are not held accountable. Your child
needs to know that you will be monitoring his/ her academic progress on a regular basis either with
Parent Portal or communication with your child’s teachers. Your child also needs to know that
successes will be recognized and poor performance will be addressed. Your child needs to know
that you care and that you will be consistent regarding your interest in school.
FRIENDS- Peer relationships are very influential when it comes to academic success. If children
surround themselves with friends who are strong academic students, they are more likely to take
school more seriously.
SUBSTANCE ABUSE- Students who are taking drugs or drinking alcohol are often distracted to the
point where their school performance is affected. If you suspect that your child is drinking or using
drugs, talk to him or her about it as well as your child’s doctor and school counselor.
*If you believe there are other reasons why your child does not do well in school, make
an appointment to see your child’s counselor. Recognizing that there is a problem is the
first, and most important, step in finding a solution.
We hope these tips help!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Wilking & Mrs. Upshaw

NEWS
At our February 12th meeting, a representative from Forgotten Harvest came to talk to the Ecology Club about food
waste. We learned some very interesting and shocking facts:
- 1/3 of the food produced is wasted
*that's 70 billion pounds of food-waste per year
*most of this food is perishable food items since they have a shorter shelf-life
- to put the amount of food wasted in perspective imagine the Empire State Building. It is 103 stories tall. You
could fill the Empire
State Building 92 times each year with the amount of food we waste.
- There are 49 million hungry people throughout the world, and 70 billion pounds of wasted food - so there is enough
food produced to feed everyone. We don't have a food-shortage issue, we have a distribution problem.
How you can help: Contact Forgotten Harvest to volunteer in their wear-house or on their farm: 248.268.7510
Carter’s Green Team is continuing its initiative within the building called…
No Waste Wednesday
What is the No Waste Wednesday initiative? We are encouraging Carter staff and students to pack a lunch
where you don’t throw out any food, packaging or utensils. You eat what you bring, and you re-use, recycle
or compost your packaging and utensils. Nothing goes into the garbage can!
Six Simple Ways to Pack a Waste-Free Lunch

Carry your lunch - Use a washable cloth bag or lunch box / NO throw-away bags

To pack food - Use reusable plastic containers and/or a thermos for hot/cold food
NO plastic bags that you throw away / NO plastic wrap, foil or Styrofoam /
NO pre-packaged individually wrapped items (individual chip bags, yogurt cups, etc…)

For your drink - Use thermos and/or a reusable plastic container
NO single use carton, cans, or bottles like juice boxes, milk cartons, etc…

Utensils - Use real or plastic utensils that you take home, wash, and reuse
NO plastic utensils that you throw away

Napkins - Use cloth napkin to wash and reuse
NO paper napkins

Food - Pack only food you will eat, in quantities you will eat
NO packing food that you don’t like / NO packing too much food

Pasta for Pennies
Pasta for Pennies is a fundraiser to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
The LLS is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding
blood cancer research and providing education and patient services.
Thanks to LLS funded research and the fundraising effort of programs like
Pasta for Pennies, survival rates for some blood cancer patients have doubled,
tripled and even quadrupled.
Leukemia is the most common cancer in children, adolescents and young adults
younger than 20 years and it causes more deaths than any other cancer among
this age group.
Last year Carter raised $3,800.00! This year we have been challenged to
raise $4000.00!
The drive starts on Monday, January 26, and ends February 13! All coins, paper
money and online donations are accepted and appreciated.
Every Friday Ms. Ceravolo and Mrs. Cherry will collect money and report the total
back to the class. Keep track of your class donations using the thermometer and
paper pennies.
The winning 4th hour class gets a Pasta lunch from Olive Garden!
GET EXCITED! BE AN ACTIVE PARTICIPANT AND LEAD THE WAY!
