BRITISH ASSISTANCE AND PROSPERITY OFFICER
Contract Period: One (1) year
The BTCO in Taipei is part of a worldwide network of 230 posts, representing British interests
overseas. Our office in Taipei has thirty-six members of staff.
Background
The British Assistance and Service Section provide help and advice to British nationals who are in
difficulty while living or travelling in Taiwan. We provide up-to-date travel advice and other
information to help British nationals travel safely. If there is a major crisis or incident in Taiwan
affecting British nationals, we provide a range of help to those affected.
The Prosperity team reports on the economy for UK businesses and Government, lobbies on behalf
of UK companies for improvements to the business environment, works with administration to
promote low carbon development and promotes scientific collaboration between the UK and
Taiwan. The team works with a range of Taiwanese stakeholders in areas from offshore RMB
banking to energy policy. It objectives are covered in various sections of the CBP.
Main duties and responsibilities

To provide administrative support, a degree of frontline assistance work and cover to the
Senior British Assistance Officer, including:
o Assistance (prisoners, arrests, hospitalisations, deaths), maintenance of prisoner
accounts;
o Lead officer for British National Overseas issues; liaison with Taiwan authorities,
other UK posts, community organisations, representative offices;
o Consular administration, answering general enquiries, conducting customer services
and playing a part in crisis preparedness;

To provide administrative support to the Prosperity Section. This will mean:
o Supporting team to serve wider Prosperity objectives;
o Helping to organise meetings and events such as calls, conferences, roundtables,
visits by UK experts to Taiwan and visits from Taiwan to the UK and so on;
o Researching and monitoring changes in Taiwan’s economic, trade and climate
policies.






Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
Ability to work with contacts and colleagues at all levels;
Personal drive and the ability to be a self-starter ;
Strong organisational, analytical and time management skills, with good attention to detail;
Flexible, resilient under pressure and decisive with a proven record of delivering results to a
high standard within tight deadlines.
Minimum qualifications:





Experience in administrative kind of work
A college/ university level degree or equivalent experience is preferred;
Fluent in English and Mandarin, oral and written
Strong IT computer skills using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Office, Internet and MS
Project. Experience with Oracle systems and databases preferred
Some fluency in Cantonese and Taiwanese dialects would be desirable (but not necessary)

The British Trade & Cultural Office offers a competitive remuneration package, with gross salary
starting from TWD 36,572 per month x 13.5, benefits, a leave entitlement and training package.
Specific training and mentoring for the role will be provided for the successful candidate. This may
include training in London and the region.
