Welcome New District Director
We are excited to announce the addition of Ed
Everman, District Director, to our Montgomery
SWCD Staff. Ed is no stranger to conservation or
Montgomery County. In 2012, Ed retired from
the Ohio Department of Natural Resources after
serving as the Area IV Program Specialist. He has
worked in the Soil and Water Conservation field
for 36 years, and was based in the Montgomery
SWCD office from 1979 until his retirement.
His return to service brings with it a wealth of knowledge and
experience. We are excited to have a new leader who brings such
familiarity and know-how to the job.
Ed and his wife Shari live in southern Darke County on a small
grain farm. He currently serves on the Arcanum-Butler School
Board, as well as being a member of the Ft. Black Masonic Lodge
in New Madison, Ohio, the Valley of Dayton Scottish Rite, the
Antioch Shrine, the Darke County Shrine Club, the Darke County
Farm Bureau and the Darke County Farmers Union. “I am looking
forward to working with the Board, staff, elected officials and
residents of Montgomery County,” Ed stated recently. We are
looking forward to working with him too!
Our partner agencies have a couple additions to announce too!
Meet them on page 2. Welcome to all!

Welcome Resource Conservationist
Hello Everyone! My name is Justin Wagner and I have
been selected as the new Resource Conservationist with
the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) in
Montgomery County. I will be assisting Jeff Barnes, the
District Conservationist in Montgomery and Preble
counties, and will share my time between both offices.
I started my conservation career as summer help with NRCS in Shelby
County in 2006. After college, I was hired as the District Technician
in Van Wert County, and then as the Soil Conservation Technician on
the Grand Lake St. Marys Project. During my time there, I earned a
Bachelor’s in Agriculture. Shortly after finishing that, I was accepted
for this position.
I grew up in Botkins, Ohio, raising show pigs, and being actively involved
in 4-H and FFA. Enjoying the outdoors along with raising livestock is
what motivated me to pursue a career in Conservation. I currently still
reside in Botkins with my wife, Megan and our three sons. I look forward
to working with the landowners and producers of Montgomery County,
and I encourage anyone who has questions to call me or send an email.
Welcome PF Farm Bill Biologist

I grew up in Tecumseh, Michigan, a small town near the Ohio and
Michigan State Line. I was always active in the outdoors and loved
exploring the woods, rivers and fields. My passion for wildlife and
conservation led me to earn a Bachelor of Science in Fisheries and
Wildlife from Michigan State University in 2007. I have worked for
various agencies in natural resource and wildlife management over
the years. I enjoy volunteering and getting involved with communities,
and being active and outdoors through biking, hiking and camping,
kayaking and fishing. During the winter, I play ice hockey and enjoy
snowboarding.
I hope that I can be a great resource to anyone within the area who
may need my assistance. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you
have any comments, questions, concerns or would just like to say
hello. My work cell number is (937) 578-8264 and my email is

Did you ever wonder why we have so many native options in our tree and plant sale? Or why many
of our new offerings this year have berries? It’s for the birds (and butterflies, and other pollinators!)
Native plants have many benefits. The trees and shrubs we’ve included help native wildlife in multiple
ways. They are host plants (needed caterpillar food) for many species of butterflies and moths. They
are important nectar sources for butterflies and hummingbirds. The fruit they produce may be tasty
and nutritious for you, to birds and wildlife, or all of the above! Some provide great bird nesting habitat.
If you love feeding the birds, then planting some (or all!) of these trees and shrubs in your yard would
be a great next step to attracting and keeping many species healthy and happy in your yard!

Rain Barrels
Garden Cover Crops
A Rain Barrel collects and stores some of the rain water
from your roof for you to use later. This system hooks
into your existing downspout and overflows back into it,
protecting your foundation. Use the water to water your
garden or lawn, wash your car, or add water to your
compost. The soft rain water is better for plants and
won’t ‘spot’ your car. Storing the water helps keep our
streams healthy and prevents flooding. Help the
environment, your plants, and even your water bill!
Garden Cover Crops - 1/2 lb
$5.00
½ pound will cover 100 - 150 sq. ft.
Cover crops are planted for the benefits they
provide to soil health, plant vitality, and
pollinators. These mixes contain untreated
seeds and an inoculant that is OMRI
approved for organic gardens. Manage by
planting through or composting the residue.
Single Rain Barrel Kit
$30.00
Includes all parts to make your barrel, step-by-step
instructions, and a Tip Sheet for care of your barrel,
DOES NOT INCLUDE THE BARREL!
Summer Mix: Cow Pea, Flax, Oats,

temperature is 65°F. Also can be managed

These packets are offered as a low cost source of conservation plant materials which will provide food and cover for
wildlife. Many plants are small and bare-rooted. We are offering a few varieties in small pots again this year.
The majority of our plants are native to Ohio. Most packets will fit easily into one or two grocery bags. They are available
to anyone and may be planted anywhere. To keep the cost low, we are unable to furnish replacements nor will we mail or
deliver the packets. We reserve the right to make substitutions if necessary.
Please send your check or money order with your order form. Packets can be picked up from our office on April 9th
and 10th from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. No additional pick up notice will be sent so mark your calendar! You
will receive your receipt when you pick up your order. We have limited quantities of some trees and plants, so
place your order early! Orders must be received by the District office by March 13th, 2015.
