If you’re married, or if you have a really good friend, then you know what it takes to be in a “relationship” with someone. And we know that if we want that relationship to remain strong and have that relationship grow into friendship, we have to do two things: one is to spend time together, and the other is to talk with each other frequently. As Catholic Christians we know that the best friend, and the love of our souls is Jesus Christ. Yet many of us suffer from a feeling that we don’t really know who Jesus is, or we don’t feel like we have a personal relationship with Him. Jesus is more like a figure from a history book to some of us, or some mysterious God-man to whom we have obligations, yet we don’t really feel anything in our hearts towards Him. One of the Answers to Deepening our Relationship With Christ The solution to this personal struggle is to deepen your relationship with Jesus. Just as you would with any human friend or your spouse, you have to make a decided effort to get to know Him better. You have to spend time with Him, and speak with Him often. In other words, you need to spend time in prayer. Eucharistic Adoration is the best way we have on this earth to spend a long time in quiet conversation with Jesus. You’ll recall that just before Jesus physically left the apostles and ascended to the Father, he reassured them, “And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20) This statement is fulfilled in the reality of the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, in the hands of the priest at Mass each day, reserved in the tabernacles in the heart of our churches, and right before our very eyes in Eucharistic Adoration. “Feel the Love” in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament What sets Eucharistic Adoration apart from other forms of prayer is that we are able to be in the same room with Him present in the Blessed Sacrament, the Eucharist. Though veiled under the appearance of bread, in reality we are gazing on His Sacred Heart, and the love that radiates from the little white host in the monstrance - the beautiful stand which holds the host behind glass for the adorer to see - is transforming. Sitting or kneeling in the presence of Jesus in this way could be called “Son-bathing.” Like the rays of sunshine that warm our skin, the rays of His love touch our souls and provide healing, reassurance, comfort, strength… whatever it is we need in this life to help us live according to God’s will so we can one day live with Him forever in Heaven. So when you visit Jesus in the most Holy Sacrament of the Altar you can say the rosary, read a prayer book, read from the bible…contemplate, meditate, they ways to speak with him are many…but most of all…make that visit once a month – every first Friday…it doesn’t matter when…just visit and be with him every chance you get. You’ll be amazed at the transformation your life will make if you take only a few minutes a month, just for Him in Adoration. If you’d like to discuss this further please call me. This effort is a means by which we can all work together to care for the church by sharing the gifts God has granted us. Our parish goal is 100% participation. We welcome you to join us in joyfully supporting the DDF Annual Appeal. Please take time this week to reflect and pray about the blessings you are called to share with your Catholic family. We invite you to to put your prayers into action by making a pledge to support the DDF Annual Appeal. As you disern your gift amount, please consider the following questions: 1. How can I establish a deeper relationship with God? 2. Do I really belive that everything I am and everthing I have is a gift from God? 3. Is what I give to the church enough to show how grateful I am for what God has given me? Your involvement is important and appreciated. Before you proceed with taking the survey, it is very important that you have read the Lineamenta [the working document] of the Synod that will take place in October 2015. A separate link to this document can be found here on the diocesan web site. After you have read the Lineamenta, please respond to the questions in one of the two surveys linked on the diocesan web site and submit them before 20 February, 2015. If you feel you cannot answer each question, please submit the responses that you did give. As you fill out this questionnaire, don’t lose sight that it follows a process that should be respected: the first part is “Listening” and is oriented toward a description of the situation of the family in our world today; the second part is “Looking at Christ” and is oriented toward a reflection on what the Gospel teaches us about the family; and the third part is “Confronting the situation” which inquires about the pastoral initiatives and political actions that we should promote in order to improve the situation of families. Therefore, as you answer each question, please follow this methodology by taking into account the part of th e questionnaire in which you are working. Again thank you for your contribution to this important topic in our Church, today. In Christ, Rev. Rafael Partida Vicario Episcopal, Región Pastoral de Riverside Reflecting on God’s Word In Jesus’ day, demonic possession was not uncommon. Mark presents Jesus as one who takes on the evil spirits, overturning their possession of this man. Jesus has declared war against the kingdom of Satan. Its hour of ascendancy is coming to an end. The unclean spirit recognizes Jesus as one with greater power, for it asks, “Have you come to destroy us?” Then it confesses Jesus as the “Holy One of God” (Mark 1:24). Jesus will battle the forces of evil to the death, his death. But what looks like defeat for Jesus will be changed to victory, because the power of God is at work in him. In the first reading from Deuteronomy, Moses is speaking to the people before they enter the Promised Land. The entire book is his farewell speech to them. He will not go with them. He consoles them, saying that God promises to raise up a prophet like Moses and will speak through him: “I . . . will put my words into his mouth” (Deuteronomy 18:18). Jesus is presented to us today as the prophet like Moses, who teaches with the authority of God and whose words are obeyed even by unclean spirits. There is no power on earth or beyond it greater than the power of God at work in him. --James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. Copyright (c) 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.
