Viña De Lestonnac Retreat & Retirement Center 39300 De Portola RD. Temecula CA, 92592 Two weeks ago we, The Order of the Sisters of the Company of Mary our Lady, introduced ourselves to you. As time permits we will continue sharing our rich history as a Religious Order. Jeanne de Lestonnac, from Bordeaux, France, seeing that there were no schools for girls, founded our Order in 1607 with the mission to educate girls. On May 15, 1949, she was canonized a saint by Pope Pius XII. At the heart of our mission, or charism, is the service of a faith that bears fruit in works of justice through education. We wish a blessed Advent season, Merry Christmas and prayers from us, for Fr Anthony Dao, priests, deacons, parish-staff and all parishioners. The Parish Office will be closed from December 24th 2014 through the 4th of January 2015. A reflection on the Holy Family OK...it's almost 2015 and the New Year is almost here...And although our culture tells us that Christmas is over – it is not. We are still in the 12 Days of Christmas until the Epiphany which we celebrate on Sunday, January 4. So as I thought about this, I thought of the readings throughout the Christmas Masses and the sacrifices both Mary and Joseph had to endure. I would venture to guess that both Mary and Joseph had big plans before the Angel Gabriel visited. Maybe they wanted a big family, maybe a big house, maybe four donkeys and a new cart...or maybe Joseph wanted to open a carpentry business. But instead, they both accepted the situation they were given and committed themselves to Jesus, God and their faith. Together, Mary and Joseph put all their desires aside, answered God’s call and raised Jesus. Their sacrifices (even though a true blessing) were remarkable and a true example. At past Sunday Masses our priests have given powerful homilies that covered many topics including the role of the father in the family. The father is to be a pillar of the family and a mentor to the children. All the stories I read that involve Joseph clearly describe him as a leader and a teacher. He always seemed to have put Mary and Jesus first above anything else he wanted. He may not be as popular as Mary or Jesus but I believe he is truly proud of the role he played in the family. I’m sure it’s not easy raising the son of God but I believe Joseph was man enough to handle such a task. On the other hand...when my kids got hurt nobody could care for them better than my wife. I always tried my best to cuddle them but the moment my wife entered the room they would reach for her and suddenly...the crying would stop and the child felt better. Mothers are beautiful and amazing. It’s no wonder our Catholic faith honors Mary as she is truly an amazing women whose role was to raise and nurture her Child. Just like any son should, Jesus listened to his Mother Mary and did what she asked. Then, as Jesus got older Jesus took special care of Mary and ensured that she was taken care of after His death. I think we can all learn a lot from our kids. They teach us that it's fun to laugh out loud at the silliest things. They teach us that something so small can mean so much. They teach us that a hug and a kiss is the best ever. They teach us how to treat other people kindly. Now kids ask many questions throughout the day and they are very inquisitive but I think we too can learn from them. I believe the Holy Family did this quite well. Mary and Joseph had to teach Jesus all the tangibles such as tying his sandals, making his bed, carpentry and maybe “why the sky is blue”. But Mary and Joseph were never proud enough to think they always knew more than Jesus and Jesus wasn’t so proud to think he could do it all on his own. ~Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year to you and your family. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means “God is with us.” When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home. After World War I, the chaos of daily life in Europe made its impact felt on the family structure. Partly to offer Christians an image of hope and holiness in married family life, and also to promote the welfare of children, today’s feast was “invented” in 1921. In 1969, it became a feast of Christmas. The prayers today remind us not only of family life, but of life in the community of faith. AD PAGES Page 12 AD PAGES Page 13 AD PAGES Page 14 AD PAGES Page 15 Reflecting on God’s Word Rev. Anthony Dao, Pastor In today’s first reading King David is settled in his cedar palace, no upcoming battles on the horizon, feeling quite content, glass of wine in hand, chatting with Nathan the prophet about how good life is, when he gets this inspiration: “God should have a house! Certainly more than that old tent we have been dragging around. And I will build it!” Nathan approves. But that night, God weighs in: “Tell David, ‘Thanks, but no thanks. I like the tent.’ ” We don’t know why God said no to David. But it seems that God wanted to make clear not only who was building God’s dwelling place but also who really was in charge of everything. God was the kingdom builder and God chose to work with very simple material, like a tent. But this was nothing compared to God’s decision a millennium later, on the day when the angel Gabriel was sent to a town of Galilee called Nazareth. God’s plan from the beginning was to take up residence among us closer than any building could be, whether it was as magnificent as Solomon’s temple or as humble as the simplest parish church. What God intended was to dwell with us as one of us, taking on human flesh and blood. And in the fullness of time God came asking if one of us would be willing. We don’t know how long it took for Mary to answer. We only remember the important thing: she said yes. Rev. Sergio Rentería, Parochial Vicar —James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. Assistant Clergy: Rev.
